A couple of my buddies went to Copper Canyon a last year and they picked up the vehicle permits which have to be turned in and when leaving the
country. Well they went by the 24/7 place where you return these things and waited for over 2 hrs for someone to show up. No one showed up, they
said F-it and bailed. Not doing that has caused one of them to cancel a trip to Mexico, he was only able to ride in Baja, where there permits aren't
required. How do they resolve this mess?

I've gotten them a few times, and as I recall, there was an address on the back where you could mail it in. I tried to peel it off my windshield - it
came off in pieces - and I did mail it. But I did two trips on one of my registrations. I just left it on my windshield in the US. When it was
checked at the checkpoint - no problem. I think if they go to the registration place on their next trip, and you have the old one in hand, they can
see that you (1) still own the car; and (2) trying to follow procedure. They must get a lot of mixed up gringos.

I turned mine in off my truck about 4 months late the last time I used one. I got it at the checkpoint at K21 in Sonora and returned it there, too. I
had to scrape the thing off the windshield (which actually came off in two whole sections that had been laminated together) and they took it and the
paperwork and cleared me. Well, I say cleared because I have not had an occasion to go back below the free zones to see if I show up on a computer as
not having turned it in.
People have told me that you will pay a fine if you loose the paperwork. I had everything and paid no fine even though I was 4 months late returning
it.

I'm thinking that I might take the ferry and venture mainland for a while after doing Baja, and I've heard conflicting reports of how this "vehicle
permit" works. Can I please get a link to an information site concerning this, or someone here help me out?
I've heard it is as simple as getting charged $25 on a credit card and as long as you take the vehicle back out of the country there will be no other
charges. Also heard that after you pay the $25 you can cancell the card, sell the vehicle in Mexico and not have hassels??? That seems risky and too
obvious to me
