I was wondering if there is any info showing the old Peso and the Nuevo Peso and if there are certain areas in Baja that like to scam newbie
travellers by giving back old currency as change?
Is this ever a problem and if so and tips/info/links that could shed some light on the subject?

Allow me to go a bit further with my answer above.
Around 1990, when the peso was about 3800 to 1, I would buy bags of new [old] pesos from a friend who worked in a bank. I paid 20 bucks for a sack
of 2000 peso coins. At the time I was working in the states and would use them in parking meters. [ yeah..I know, shame on me ]
I still use them to this day at the intersections when stopped by a red light and, inevitibly, a can will be thrust in your face for a donation.

I heard some people talk of some gas stations giving back the old bills as change, but I've never been so I don't know. Plus I don't know what they

Hit the exchange or a bank at the border and buy pesos so you don't have to worry about it...cheaper that way too!

Do you know what the current bills look like? If they don't look like that, take the offensive.

Well if I get the old worthless ones, then they are......worthless! And I'm sure ALL the locals know the difference, therefore I wont be able to use
them, unless I try and scam someone else.
I just heard that the old currency was devalued so all the money before then is now worthless, but it still exists.....to give as change to
unsuspecting tourists.

I still have an old 5000 peso note I carry around in my wallet. Maybe I should try and pass it on to an unsuspecting Gringo.
I've also got a bucket of old "One Peso" coins painted Red, Yellow and White that I used for poker chips years ago. I suppose even a Gringo wouldn't
go for them, though.
BTW, I was surprised to see that there is a NEW NEW Twenty Peso plastic banknote. I received one in change last week. Wonder why ?

i've received old peso coins as change at the toll booths. first time i didn't notice until later. always checked afterwards and caught it the second

In the late 1950s I had a boat that need some modifications to convert it to an effective dive boat. Needed a number of brass/ copper and possibly SS
washers. I checked with my local hardware store, "Linbrook" in Anaheim California. Do recall price but at the time too expense.
Was traveling regularly to TJ and spots south for the bulls, so one trip I made a slight detour to a TJ bank and picked up several hundred large
copper one centavo coins. The bank personel was happy that I took all their big coins and I was certainly happy to get them at 12.5 to 1
Returned to Anaheim, constucted a fixture for my drill press and drilled away.
Modified the boat using the one centavo coins as washers...Any one out there know of a 1954 17 foot run-a-bout called Miss Tish? Thats the boat!
Just never know when Mexican money will be needed or waht it can be used for...

As a persistently broke student at UdeLA in '63, I can remember how a pocketfull of those big peso coins (.08 usd) made me feel like I actually had
some money. And, well I did. One of those was a "pesero" cab ride on Reforma all the way from Chapultepec to the Zocalo, a taco, or TWO Victoria
