Another "historical" photo near La Paz

Jack Swords - 12-28-2007 at 11:52 AM

This is the famous "Glowman" outside of La Paz near San Juan de La Costa. It is up a canyon with nothing around it. First saw it in 2002, revisited it this week. No much change except the arroyo is sanded in and can't drive to the site. Origin unknown, date unknown. Amazing how the paints survived the weather. Still too windy in La Paz, port captain closed the harbor...bored, can't sail.

JR (si, JRBaja), reported about Glowman:

"Apparently, about 30 some years ago, When San Juan De La Costa mine was operating, they purchased some machinery from the U.S. that required some knowledgable technicians to accompany the machines and instruct them on installation and use.
This being Mexico, they were not used to the rapid pace that things happen here and got really bored. You can only catch so many fish. Especially in that area 30 years ago. So they took on this project of the "Glowman" to occupy their time. I am still trying to find out the names of the Artists and a few more details. If this is a true story, then this painting has probably done exactly what it was expected to."

One of the shrubs on the rock face seems to be growing in an interesting place. Is this a mere coincidence or was the painting meant to be anatomically correct?

Labored attempts at levity aside, how does one find the Glowman?

Shrubs come and go with the dry/wet seasons. We noticed it also. Last canyon before San Juan de La Costa town, drive up...can't miss it.

The local rancher said he provided scaffolding for three Mexicans from Mexico City, a teacher and 2 students (8 or 16 years ago). They cleaned and painted the rockface, paid for by SJ de La Costa to protect area. Another mystery...still, the painting is impressive in its form and its permanance. Anybody else have any info?
