La Paz upholstery shop

BMG - 1-2-2008 at 07:22 PM

I thought I saw some discussion on this earlier but haven't been able to find it searching. We have 2 upholstered chairs that need help. Any suggestions on a good shop to do the work in La Paz and where the best stores for the material are?

bajaretreat - 1-2-2008 at 07:57 PM

There is a shop right across the street from Soriannas - did a wonderful reupholstery job on our Jeep seats, and I had been recommended to them from another very happy customer who had furniture reuholstered there as well....Can't remember the name, but you can't miss it....

We have had alot of work done by Vanesa's. A couple of love seats and some palo de arco chairs as well as drapes. They do good work and have tons of fabrics.

Al G - 1-2-2008 at 08:27 PM

Hey, BMG check on the cost of a headliner in a jeep...would be nice to compare.

BMG - 1-4-2008 at 08:38 AM

Thanks for the info.

Marie-Rose: do you remember the cross streets for Vanesa's?

Al G: polka dots or plain?

comitan - 1-4-2008 at 09:10 AM

Went to a couple of shops today. WOW! I was shocked. M$6500 to re-cover 2 arm chairs. We decided we'll just buy new chairs.

As for the Jeep Al, didn't have an answer to the first question asked, what model Jeep?

bajaretreat - 1-4-2008 at 09:32 PM

Back in Dec'04, we had the entire interior of our Jeep Cherokee re-done in a strong vinyl material (so as to be easier to keep clean), and that included front bucket seats, back seat, the flooring as well as one of the door panels. Total cost was 2500 pesos. Times are a'changin'...

:o:wow::o
My neighbor recently had some done near our neighborhood and said the work was good and reasonable. I'll ask, but he's not home right now. That can't be right, though. I saw a LaZBoy in Dorian's for M$6900 a few months ago!!

Kate

Thanks. We are going to check out 2 more places that we've heard about. The fabric prices seemed quite reasonable at Vanesa's and they have a lot to choose from. They didn't break down the cost of materials and labor, only the total cost.

longlegsinlapaz - 1-5-2008 at 08:49 AM

IMHO Vanessa's has the highest labor costs in town!! They do have good quality fabrics, but you can find the exact same fabric elsewhere for less. There are a lot of other shops which are much more reasonable than Vanessas. BMG try the one on the hwy in Chametla right across from all the segundos (sorry, don't remember the name). I've bought fabric from Vanessa, but done my own upholstery/drapes.

Will check it out.

btw - what are your rates?

longlegsinlapaz - 1-5-2008 at 09:05 AM

Well, first of all, I don't have a "working" FM3.;) Second, I'm in the final stages of finish detail on my new casa & barely can find the time to remember my own name; I think my pets have contacted an adoption agency on their own! Third, I wouldn't dream of depriving you of the fun of the search!

I don't have a "working" FM3 >>As they say on the boaters net, will trade for coconuts.

Second, I'm in the final stages of finish detail on my new casa & barely can find the time to remember my own name >>I'll handwrite you a stick-on name tag.

I think my pets have contacted an adoption agency on their own >>Too late, the paperwork was approved yesterday and they move next week.

I wouldn't dream of depriving you of the fun of the search >>I've never been very good at games.

When can you get started:?::?::?::?:

Huh??? Who am I? What's this little piece of paper with scribbling on it pinned to my chest & where are my animals? Do I know you? Where did these two ratty old chairs sitting just inside the door come from? Why is there a pile of coconuts in each one??:o:O:o:O :lol::lol::lol::lol::lol::lol::lol:

GREAT! We'll be by on Thursday to pick them up!

JESSE - 1-6-2008 at 04:19 AM

Dont go to the one in 5 de Mayo, almost in front of Ley. They told us it would take a week to do our loveseats, and it took overtwo months. We didnt even bother to pick them up and we bought new ones.

"Recovering Alcoholic" - Drunken Upholsterer.

Pompano - 1-8-2008 at 03:43 PM

We did use Vanessa's in La Paz a few years back and really liked the end result. A nice bright yellow fabric with a sunscreen-backing for about a dozen large window roll-downs, with very colorful valances to match. Goes well with the ocean and palm views.

The completed product was fast and not very expensive back then, plus they drove 285 miles to install.

One good thing about today's influx of buyers...there is more competition for your dollar. Shopping around will be worth your time.

Got 'em! Love the fabric. Hope you found the payment slid under your front door. Don't worry about the change. I'll pick it up later.

update on upholstery

BMG - 2-21-2008 at 10:04 PM

We received our chairs back today after taking them to be reupholstered 10 days ago. They look nice and we are happy with the work. You can see the chairs on the day we took them in to the shop. (He really should paint the front of his shop.) Instead of paying M$6740 ( the quote from Venesa's that I just threw away), it cost us M$2000 for both chairs. This included materials and labor. We also took in 4 cushions off our dining chairs that ran M$120 each. I would recommend the shop even if they don't accept coconuts.

Another success story, same shop. I bought a recliner at the segunda and took it straight there, so no "before" photo, but it was pretty hideous. Dropped it off Monday and got it Friday. $1100 pesos and they delivered it to my house rather than trying to stuff it back into my Samurai.

Looks really nice, but you forgot to have then install the drink holders.

Office chairs

BMG - 5-6-2008 at 10:26 PM

We were looking all over La Paz for some good office chairs. The ones we found either cost a fortune or were cheap Chinese junk (sometimes both!) Finally found a couple of nice looking, high quality chairs out at one of the segundos. Paid M$700 for the pair. We worked on the wood ourselves before taking them in to Francisco. He charged us M$1500 to reupholster them (labor & materials). Each chair took about 250 brass tacks.

For about U$100 each we now have 2 great looking comfortable office chairs.
