At the risk of straying off thread, my favorite Mexican movie is Y Tu Mama Tambien. In the movie, the beach they go to is called "Boca del Cielo". It's a bit of a mystery as to where it was actually filmed. Anyone know?

"Pray for the Wildcats" Staring Andy Griffith, William Shatner, the gay dad from Brady bunch and another guy as dirt bikers in Baja. It's a crack up. There's more information at Wikipedia and it's available on DVD, although I think it's a bootleg.

ok i watched this rental some monthsn ago, there are wonderful scenes of this large hacienda and vineyard plantation - has to be guad valle or someplace between tecate and ensenada, a white building/mansion.
anyway has anybody seen this one and can they identify the shoot location?
and there is a lot of really nice local scenery too.
movie is so-so, some good action .

Martyman - 1-8-2008 at 10:19 AM

I'm gonna rent "Baja" cause I used to be in love with Molly Ringworm.

YES! The Baja person's cult movie is 'BAJO CALIFORNIA: The Limit of Time'

Those of you who attended our Viva Baja Cactus tour of Tijuana saw the English version of this film that was shown on the Sundance Channel back in 2001.

New Spanish only versions can be purchased in Mexico.

See the Baja highway, San Francisco de la Sierra, the giant cave paintings, the Arce family tree, and a whole lot more!

duke62 - 1-8-2008 at 10:49 AM

I believe you can also purchase "Bajo California: The Limit of Time" on Amazon.com as well, but, again, only the Spanish language version, without subtitles. However, I seem to recall that the dialogue is a mixture of Spanish & English? Great film that captures the beauty and spirit of Baja.

CaboRon - 1-8-2008 at 10:53 AM

Let´s not forget "The Old Man and the Sea".

John Houston directed this wonderful movie with dialogue taken from the book.

Yes, it is a more visual film than verbal, so if you can't get the English sub-titled one, no great loss.

The movie does begin in English, as the main character 'Damian' is from Laguna Beach and his wife speaks to him in English, as he drives south listening to her cassette message and her letter he receives at Santa Rosalia.

Again, a fun movie for us Baja travelers to watch...

Spencer Tracy was great... However, that wasn't Baja if I remember correctly... Cuba maybe?

Martyman - 1-8-2008 at 04:03 PM

I just tried to get all those above mentioned films on Netflix and the only one available is Y Tu Mama...
I was expecting better. They have a good Kurosawa collection

Ken Cooke - 1-8-2008 at 06:57 PM

Let's not forget, "Dust To Glory" (2005)

A bit of a stretch, but...

Mexray - 1-8-2008 at 10:58 PM

...these were 'filmed' partially in Baja (Rosarito)...probably most remembered was 'Titanic'....I could recognize some of those 'waves' out there off the coast!:tumble:

Here's the complete list...

How many remember that outstanding movie on the above list...

Tell Them Johnny Wadd Is Here (1976)

Now there's a real winner!:o

Here's another longer list:

About forty years ago or so some one wrote a book about a little boy who for some reason had to walk a large portion of the baja coastline living off the land. I think he was trying to get back home or something. A few years later someone made a movie of it, most likely made for TV. I can't remember the name of it. Does anyone know about this? Kind of like the Island of the Blue Dolfins, one solo central character and nature.

Sorry...just couldn't resist another list...

Good list Mexray!

Seriously, in 1971-ish a film made the rounds in theatres about hunting from Baja to Alaska... I believe it was called The American Adventure...

It began in Baja, at Papa Fernandez', Gonzaga Bay where they HQ'd for the bighorn sheep hunt... That part was filmed in 1965 and they included a scene with my parents arriving in their Wagoneer (that was a shock to see) and had no idea they were being filmed! The movie ended with the shooting of a giant polar bear of Alaska. It wouldn't make it in today's P-C world, but 30 years ago things were different.

I can only imagine they filmed my folks driving into Gonzaga because seeing any vehicle there in '65 was pretty rare!

I have tried to find this film without any luck... you can see both my parents in it, so I would like to get a copy. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

DENNIS - 1-9-2008 at 12:34 PM

Great list, Mexray.....

Can I add one even if it's on the mainland? It's a classic called, "Debbie Does Durango." Remember that one? Betcha do.

bajadedom - 1-9-2008 at 06:31 PM

Wasn't Bogart's "Treasure of the Sierra Madre" - with the famous quote'Badges,we don't got to show you no stinking badges' filmed in or at least to look like Baja? Great flick anyhow...

I don't know were it was filmed but the Mexican setting was Tampico or something like that south of Texas east side.

The book was set in Havana. Don't know where it was filmed. ++Ken++

Some Treasure of Sierra Madre erata...

Mexray - 1-9-2008 at 11:47 PM

TSM has to be one of the best Mexican 'location' films ever...good actors, action, and that classic irony at the end to wrap it all up!

I think that was the only flick that John Huston directed his father, Walter...what great characters they were...I can just imagine the fun making that film all those years ago!

The flick does indeed begin in the coastal 'village' of Tampico and moved into the Sierra Madre Mts north of Mexico City.

1. here's a recap of the basic story.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Treasure_of_the_Sierra_Madr...

2. Here's a list of all the location used to make the film.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0040897/locations

3. And a map that shows Tampico and the Sierra Madre.

http://tinyurl.com/2gcyco

There's been many great films made since TSM, but it somehow just never loses original charm of a classic!

Don't forget Ray Liotta in Inferno. Most of it was filmed in San Felipe and Mexicali. Haven't seen, but I remember hearing about it

Alan - 1-10-2008 at 07:02 AM

Lat time I was out at Balandra (Oct) there was a lot of construction going on. It looked like they were building some kind of facades for a movie shoot. Does anybody have any more info on it?

Nowadays ya need a passport to go home to the US. But, in the Baja "Badges? I don't need no stinking badges" as was said to Humphrey Bogart in the old film Treasure of the Sierra Madre. Ah, the good ole days.
