Uhhmm, Don't Plan on Using the ATM

Gypsy Jan - 1-7-2008 at 11:06 PM

...in Puerto Nuevo.

We had lunch at Marina Brisas last week (the lobster was excellent and fresh, BTW)).

The ATM in the kiosk was hijacked the night before. The robbers used a burn bar to cut out the money drawer just after it was filled, taking MN $40,000,000 and US $30,000, according to local report.

They put up a blackout curtain to prevent any viewing of the "burn" and finished the job within twenty minutes - so they say.

The cops down there are not as dumb as our smash and grab criminals up here... of course being a cop helps.

What's a "burn bar"? Sounds like a fun toy... :)

Maybe that is a "hip" term for a cutting torch.

Burn bar is old school term for Cutting torch...from the 40's I think.

A Burn Bar

is about five feet long and uses acetylene and oxygen.

Ultra hot, it did the job in twenty minutes, where a regular blowtorch would have taken 2 and one-half hours or more. to accomplish the same task.

The thieves used water to cool down the metal around the area they were cutting in the ATM so the money didn't burn up.

Wow! That amount may replace tourist dollars in stimulating the local economy!

Around a year ago, I went to an ATM at a grocery store in Maneadero. The machine was in a small glass enclosure outside the front entrance and the guts of the machine were hanging by a million wires half way to the floor. These guys didn't have a burn bar. It looked like the used a huge crow bar.
The machine was replaced with a new one, inside the store.

I think we're actually referring to a thermic lance here:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thermal_lance

I vaguely remember them from welding class, never seen one used. Same theory as a standard cutting torch, but provides its own oxidizeable metals to generate the heat, instead of using the metal of the material being cut.

How cool.... the article in the link was very interesting....

Although not as romantic as a Light Saber...it looks really nasty.

None are as blind as those who will not see.

These things make noise when operating. Throw in some sizzling water. People live in Puerto Nuevo, dont they?

This did not go unobserved by locals, that's for sure.

Who would say anything with cops standing outside...
