Baja Bernie - 1-13-2008 at 10:17 AM
I think, hope, that by now most of you know that I am, if nothing else, a very basically positive old fool. That said I will comment on why I have
been so silent recently.
That is because to much negative input makes me a grouchy old grump and I hate the thought of others thinking of me in that light.
So, here goes, last night I took one of my dreamin’ visits to Baja and woke up happier than I have a right to be. Then I wandered off the Torrey
Pines Beach—about as close to being in Baja without crossing the border as you can get.
I walked, listened to the crashing waves, and thought about my little bit of Paradise a ways south of the border. I remembered being castigated for
what some took as my complete opposition to ‘progress’ in Baja. Even had one guy say I had no business writing about Baja because I no longer live
there—that really seems rather silly because if you notice very few folks that wrote of Baja have ever lived there and I called it home for over 26
years and visited for over a half a century.
I do not know all of its many locations as do David K, Harry Crosby, Steinbeck, Mike Mc Mahan, or even Graham Machintosh—or Don Jimmy Smith. Many of
you on this board know its Missions, deserts, and its secret places much better than I—but I doubt that many of you have crawled into the skin of the
average, hard working, loving and caring Mexican families any more than I have. I have shared their dreams, their fears and together we have worked
to overcome sickness, lack of pesos and many other familar worry’s. We have shared that thing that ‘JR’ used to rant about to the discomfort of a
few—being human!
So as we deal with that which ‘progress’ seems to have a tendency to introduce—folks who are rather selfish and care not of the safety of
others—including the various Mexicans who prey on the average tourist for their own gain and their nations short term loss.
Let’s not forget the wonderful memory’s, the dreams, and even the flights of fancy that we all need to call upon to balance this beast termed
‘progress’.
Have a dreamin’ good Baja Day

I'm glad you still carry the heart and soul of Baja with you Bernie! Although I'm a relatively "new guy", only 17 years now, I find myself less and
less in touch with the "Baja" I cherish. I guess it has to do with the growing American population here and me being too lazy to go and visit old
friends I made along the way or make new ones. Must be that I truly like the life Baja has given me. Keep writing Bernie. I always enjoy your posts
and the way people react. ---- Russ

Bernie,
You might not be living in Baja in body, but you sure are living there in your soul.

Bernie,
From this new Baja-in, 16 months, there is still plenty of old Baja to enjoy along with the new. There are also plenty of new characters. Keep
writing, salud and amor, as the dinero comes and goes regardless!

Very nice thoughts.
From some other Baja 'newbies', you can count us in, too, Bernie...you have the spirit of Baja wrapped up in your writings. Keep writing..we'll keep
reading..and thanking you for the pleasure.

Bernie, good thoughts and just a reminder to us that we need to take the time to know the locals in Baja to better appreciate the culture. The more
you know the more fun you can have in interacting with the those whom you meet daily. I also like to watch, listen, and just take in what people have
to say or show you in making their world work for them in all different places. I too also love the slower pace and the lack of rushing to get done
with things or to use up things. "No Hurry, No Worry, Just Fun" this is what it is all about and the retirees know it better than most

Bernie...
Do you play golf? Well, you don't really have to play but, go over to the Golf Tournament thread and consider joining the fun. It would do all of
us a lot of good if you showed up.
