Major wind event

BajaRob - 1-14-2008 at 04:59 PM

here at Bahia Santa Maria. We have 27 shrimp boats anchored right off the beach in front of our house. Always a bad omen of more wind to come. Anyone else down here getting blown away?

bajajudy - 1-14-2008 at 05:03 PM

Rob
Where are you again?
Here it is cool(well 70 is very cool to me!) and very cloudy. We had major wind this morning but dead calm now.
We cut our morning walk in half due to the wind.

Bahia Santa Maria

BajaRob - 1-14-2008 at 05:07 PM

is about 25 miles of San Felipe. We will not see calm winds for some time.

windgrrl - 1-14-2008 at 05:09 PM

thanks for the wind report - please hold some for us for late:yes: arrival this week!

BajaWarrior - 1-14-2008 at 05:26 PM

Rob, any damage as a result of wind or waves?

I see we're on mid-tides this week.

Also, wind coming from the north I take it?

We are enjoying phenominal weather in coastal San Diego, Mission Bay and San Diego Bay are like ponds. 5 miles inland though very windy, strong offshore all day.

Hook - 1-14-2008 at 05:44 PM

Predictions of downslope winds in the LA Basin possibly reaching 80 MPH tomorrow.

Rather short-lived, though. May be over by Wednesday night.

Wind, Wind Go away. And take the shrimpers with you

Russ - 1-14-2008 at 05:47 PM

It's windy here too. Up to 35mph so far today and yesterday the same. Some shrimpers, 9 boats, didn't brave the night winds last night but the one Seiner was working all night and only came into anchor around 4 this afternoon.

Hey Chuck

BajaRob - 1-14-2008 at 06:15 PM

No damage so far. The repairs at Larry's and Steve's have begun. See you Friday.

I am looking for Bahia Santa Maria - there seem to be about four of them. One is near Cabo, another in Sinaloa, another near Bahia Magdalena.

BajaRob's seems to be either south or north of San Felipe. I remember another coming down the coast road from Puerto Santa Caterina to Santa Rosallilito.

=============================================
It was a great place to fish 'in the old days' before homes and highways...

The shallow bay (that emptied at low tide) had no official name when we drove up the beach a mile and a half from Nuevo Mazatlan to fish there in the 1960's... We called it 'The Lagoon'.

Photo of mom with a double hook up of corbina at the lagoon ('Bahia Santa Maria' since about 1970).

Ruiss;

How far in yards from shore do you estimate those shrimpers to be???

Speaking of Shrimp Boats and wind!

David K - 1-15-2008 at 10:42 AM

Here is a photo from 1967 of the shrimp boat blown ashore during the '67 chubasco that wiped out San Felipe... This was behind the lagoon (Bahia Santa Maria) , in a new back lagoon created by the chubasco.

The boat was never returned to sea, and it was slowly torn apart over the next 20 years.

Regarding the wind conditions. I just learned from accuweather.com that in Costa Mesa, CA, starting Wednesday night and going all day Thursday, Santa Ana winds will be damaging, with gusts up to 80mph.

Here on the mid west coast, we've had downright balmy summer weather, very hot and windless...yesterday we had a mild dry santa anna type breeze from the NE...guess we will tie down the palapa for thursday in case the santa anna winds get down this far...nasty! Juan's our fishing right now happy to have only light breezes and a small swell.

motoged - 1-15-2008 at 11:59 AM

Nomads,
Yep, windy up here in BCN (British Columbia ...Norte)

90 kph winds on the coast and whipping winds here inland with freezing ice-pellets and snow.... -7 Celsius this morning

I would rather be blown ashore in the Baja....as any good sailor might agree:lol::lol::lol:

bajaguy, The boats are out about 200 yards now with lots of anchor line out because of the winds. Only the big seiner went out last night and is back in anchored today.

Sur2baja - 1-15-2008 at 03:34 PM

Nice pic from 1967. As a young kid, our family camped at Bahia Santa Maria and I used to climb all over that shrimp boat. I plucked, er...salvaged the brass port hole in the upper left of the wheel house (pic) and have it hanging in my garage to this day. Ah...the good ol days!

bancoduo - 1-15-2008 at 03:47 PM

Why is it when shrimp boats are anchored near shore, the brown trout seem to beach themselves?:?::o

I would like to see that... any photos? What year did you 'liberate' those parts? Had to be in the 70's I think?

I went out there in the 80's and only the Franklin diesel motor and tranny remained.

Here'a another photo from the 70's this time... Laguna Percebu:

That's a great followup story. I'm with David K, I too would like to see photos of that brass salvage part from that shrimper.

Can we get an updated wind report please from someone up north? is it blowing yet? Very calm here but cooler.

David K - 1-16-2008 at 10:31 AM

Totally calm here in Oceanside Shari... about 5 miles inland in the San Luis Rey mission / river valley.

Bob H - 1-16-2008 at 11:37 AM

It's not supposed to start until tonight... then all day tomorrow.

I was working in Escondido this afternoon, on a ridge overlooking San Pasqual Valley... it was breezy, but nothing beyond 'normal'.

Tomas Tierra - 1-16-2008 at 08:31 PM

the east wind picked up at about 11:30am on the beach in Oxnard. 30 Knots all day and about 80 degrees.

7:30pm, still blowing around 30Knots from the North East..

They downgraded all the marine forecasts just a bit this afternoon from gale warning, to 15 to 25 from the NE.

How many MPH is 30 Knots? Not all of us know this stuff.
Thanks, Bob H

The wind is blowing & the windows are rattling in San Felipe - it was beautiful until about 6pm - the nieghbors drywall & some roof tiles above it have been blown off -

Bob H - 1-17-2008 at 12:52 AM

It's going to get worse..... Bob H

They're back

BajaRob - 1-17-2008 at 07:30 AM

The beach looks like a used shrimp boat lot and the P-nche wind has been howling all night. The camp road that I cleared of sand 2 days ago is now impassable and I need to put my tractor goggles on and get to work.

shari - 1-17-2008 at 08:00 AM

It blew NW here about 15 knots last night and down to 10 knots here this morning, some clouds too but not so cold.

Tomas Tierra - 1-17-2008 at 08:43 AM

30 knots is about 35mph.

It turned into a wind "event" at about 9pm last night. I am guessing it was sustained around 50 with stronger gusts.crap flying around everywhere. down the road above point mugu they had a peak gust of 100mph..very light this morning

wornout - 1-17-2008 at 01:40 PM

San Felipe, just past noon Thursday, winds 15-17 gusting to 22. Winds were a little stronger yesterday but not much.

Russ - 1-17-2008 at 02:23 PM

Winds NNW at 20 t0 25 mph and high gust today 33mph. Cloudy and cooool until around 1:30. Clear now but still only 58º...... Sunday looks good.....
