Came out to SoCal last week for some camping in San Clemente State Park but the rain chased us south for a banzai trip into Baja...cool! Any idea of
where we are? Hint--think interior and higher elevations...

Oh all right I'll fess up--I was hoping some sharp-eyed botanist type would notice that some of those plants(ie-Dasylirion) don't grow in Baja...
...so, we indeed were scheduled for a trip to San Clemente last week and the rains did scare us off but we went to Big Bend National Park in SW Texas
instead!
Mostly I wanted to show another Baja-type place with 4WD roads and primitive camping--and inside of a national park yet. Pretty cool place, new to
me. For all the nomads out there who want to explore some neat places in the US (in case Baja gets to heavy for awhile) there's this as well as the
state park next door which has even more remote areas to explore. Nice that there's still Ocotillo and Creosote to remind one of the Baja desert too.

if you ever do get to S.C. state park and hit foul weather, send a message and I'll come down the hill and bring you back to our house for hot cocoa.
But your trip sounds better anyway. Is Big Bend the place with the observatory? Our buen Tejano amigos often took trips there for star gazing and bird
watching.

The MacDonald Observatory is in the Davis Mountains north of Big Bend and not too far away from Marfa, TX--an interesting hmmm...how do I say it,
"Repo Man" type of place, if you ever saw the movie. But the stargazing was amazing in the park as well--really quite a stunning place.
If you're a botanist-type you can go on a transect in a few minutes that takes you from hard-core Chihuahuan Desert into the Chisos mountains with
Douglas Fir and Bigtooth Maple...along with the beautiful Texas Madrones.
