I have been to all the places on the internet that I can find but can not get clear dates for Carnaval in La Paz. Any help?BMG - 1-14-2008 at 08:59 PM

Why is carnaval later than it "should be"? It should be on the days before Ash-wednesday, and this year that is on 6th of february.... Are you sure

I suspect that info may not be correct and that you are right since the various 'Carnivals' always lead up to Ash Wednesday which does indeed fall on

I asked around and the most credible answer is that La Paz didn't want to conflict with the Mazatlan Carneval so made it after ash Wednesday.danaeb - 1-16-2008 at 01:50 PM
Here's a link to the gov't website with the dates (Feb14-19) listed.
Last year they changed it because it conflicted with the elections. That may be the case again as I believe that the elections are the first sunday
in Feb.

I thought I'd made my first mistake of the year. I am hoping to break last year's record when I went all the way to August before making one!!!
I do find it interesting about the dates though after reading a bit about the different carnivals. "Inspiration for the carnival lies in the fact that
during Lent, traditionally no parties may be held and many foods, such as meat, are forbidden. It is natural for people to have the desire to hold a
large celebration at the last possible opportunity before fasting."
Of course, I am a supporter of any belief that promotes a good party.
And you want to buy your tickets early for the Tortuga fights.

The elections are scheduled for the same time that they would normally have Carnaval so they decided to have it later. Usually run into the problem
with elections and super bowl Sunday every year where the North Americans want to drink and watch football but there is no liquor sold on Election
day. Now I can understand election day with no booze but I can not imagine Carnaval with no beer.CaboRon - 1-18-2008 at 12:31 AM
I am pretty sure the bars are open on election day in California.....
