Avoid La Mesa de Tijuana

fdt - 1-17-2008 at 01:13 PM

I don't have a lot to say @ this time but since about 11AM, over an hour now, the Ermita area of Tijuana is reporting heavy shooting, bad news but it's the way it is right now. Armed gunnmen are inside houses in diferent areas and PEP, Army, City and Federal police are involved. Extreemly dangerous. Schools evacuated residents told to hit the floor.
NOT GOOD.
Bad guys are even shooting at the pilice helicopter. More later.
:wow:

Hook - 1-17-2008 at 01:22 PM

Let's hope for minimal loss of innocents, but this is what it is going to take by the authorities. Clean out the nests.

Please keep us posted, FDT.

Dont do any "heroic reporter" things down there, though..................

fdt - 1-17-2008 at 01:36 PM

No heroics here, got Sofia and have to go get the other 2 in 20 mins.
From the radio reports, 2 special forces armored vehicles are going in and the police radios (Police frequency's)are getting messages saying something like "We told you not to get involved with us" " Les dijimos que no se metieran con nosotros" " Ahora las van a pagar" "Now you're going to pay".
The worst part is that the bad guys arent in a house, they have been jumping from house to house and there are many of them. Will keep you informed after I come back from picking up more kids.

fdt - 1-17-2008 at 01:49 PM

To give you an idea as to were this is going on

lizard lips - 1-17-2008 at 02:30 PM

Keep your head down and lock the doors!

fdt - 1-17-2008 at 03:06 PM

Back; radio is reporting all under control, only 100 or so cops left in the area, they are having preliminary reports of 4 injured, 1PEP, 1FED and 2 city, also 4 detained and 3 dead. very sketchy all unoficial, they are still searching houses in the area and they are still receiving threats over the police frequency so could be some got away.Wow, what a terrifying experience for the residents of the area.

DENNIS - 1-17-2008 at 06:56 PM

I came south through TJ/SY at noon today, along the fence road, up and over the hill to the Army check point. No soldiers in the street, a few lounging around by the big white tent.
At the time, I had no idea what had been going down in the city but, now I'm surprised the Army wasn't manning the roadblock. I guess it was lunch time.

DianaT - 1-17-2008 at 07:21 PM

Just got back to the US a few hours ago, but came through Tecate --- glad we did.

Ferna,

Sure you will keep your family close by and stay safe. We know how much you and all of the great citizens of Tijuana hurt seeing this violence in your beautiful city. May it all end soon.

Take Care
John and Diane

Hook - 1-17-2008 at 10:03 PM

The SD reporter for the big news station in LA reported that the six dead found in the home were bad guys, not kidnap victims. :?:

I guess they could have been both, actually...........

Just read this this morning:
By Luis Perez
ASSOCIATED PRESS

9:41 p.m. January 17, 2008

TIJUANA, Mexico – Officials said they found six executed kidnapping victims inside a Tijuana house where gunmen took refuge Thursday during a chaotic three-hour shootout with soldiers and police.

The victims, all male, were blindfolded and gagged and had been shot in the head, said Edgar Millan, a spokesman with the federal Public Safety Department, at a news conference in Tijuana.

Soldiers, state and local police were sent in to help control the firefight that began when federal agents prepared to raid a house in the Tijuana neighborhood of La Mesa that police now say was a shelter for a cell of the Arellano Felix drug cartel.

Three nearby schools were evacuated, and television showed police running with small children in their arms while shots rang out.

Millan said the shootout killed one gunman and wounded four officers, in the latest outbreak of violence across the border from San Diego.

Four gunmen were arrested – one is a state police investigator and another a Tijuana police officer, he said. The four men will be flown to Mexico City for questioning.

Millan said officials recovered 11 automatic rifles and three bulletproof vests inside the house.

Already this week, gunmen shot and killed eight people in Tijuana, including two local police officers, as well as a district commander, his wife and his 12-year-old daughter.

Also Thursday, employees at Tijuana's City Hall and police headquarters were evacuated after receiving death threats over a police radio frequency, said Abraham Sarabia, a spokesman for city police.

Mexico has seen a spike in gang-related killings since the beginning of the year. The Mexican government has described the violence as revenge for President Felipe Calderón's year-old crackdown on organized crime that sent thousands of soldiers and federal police into violence-plagued cities nationwide.

In the central Mexican state of Hidalgo on Wednesday, assailants killed the director of public safety for the town of Tulancingo.

Jose Alvarado was shot more than 20 times, Hidalgo state police director Ahuizotl Figueroa said.

So, the police frequencies have been infiltrated. Not surprising and not hard to do if they are not encrypted. The bad guys may know the police's every move, irrespective of the bad cops within.

bajadock - 1-18-2008 at 09:20 AM

Thanks FDT for news reporting. Helps all of us. Sad for violence, but, glad that it is getting some coverage in USA.
Happy that you and yours are safe.
