Rosarito Nomads?

obafla - 1-22-2008 at 08:16 PM

Now that I'm getting started, I'll divulge that one of my homes is in Rosarito Beach.

Don't want to get too familiar right now, but curious if there are other nomads who own, rent or visit Rosarito. And do any of you have first-hand experience with crime or police hassles in Rosarito?

Von - 1-22-2008 at 08:20 PM

I'll turn you over to those in your area who can help you.
Sorry for my nastiness in the past.

No worries, Dennis. Another nomad told me that you were a good spirit. You must be a wealth of information with all of your experiences. Thanks for any assistance.

Many Years in Rosarito

Gypsy Jan - 1-22-2008 at 08:39 PM

as a homebuilder and full time resident.

Zero negative interactions with Mexican (federal, state, city, etc.) police or other authorities. That doesn't mean that it doesn't happen, just not my personal experience.

For what it's worth, the quality of life as viewed and practiced by the locals are just a few of the things I cherish about my Baja home.

If you use the "Search" feature at the top of the page, you will find a wealth of opinions and stories about Rosarito.

I'm at "Ground Zero" of Rosarito. The center of town in the new condo Riviera de Rosarito. We did have a problem once, got robbed outside Califa while looking at a condo there. It was the green Cherokee that was prowling for awhile. But they waited till my wife and kids got out of the car and went in the office, then pounced. My son saw the car speed away. People said we'd be nuts to buy in baja because of the crime. That same weekend an elderly couple in the parking lot of the Gold Coast Casino got robbed at gunpoint. The wife got killed. Danger is relative. Someone found my wifes license and credit cards down by the sand dunes, called us in Vegas and returned them. I'm not sure that would happen here. We were there through New Years day. The town was very quiet . We felt sad for the business owners but we had a great time and had great food. We took a taxi to Puerto Nuevo for lobster. It was only 10 bucks each way and the guy waited for us while we ate. We saw soldiers driving up and down the blvd. They looked like bored kids. We haven't been hassled yet by the cops. Maybe just lucky. On a side note: Has anyone noticed how fast cars stop for you when crossing the street in Rosarito. It's really something. That never happens in Vegas. In fact Tourists get hit and killed frequently in Vegas crossing the street. To all those that slam Rosarito, I know there are prettier places in Baja further south but getting there is the issue. I can go door to door in 6 hours (even on the return trip with our sentry passes). The town could be cleaner but we've found the people in town to be very friendly and a beach sunset is a beach sunset. Particularly when coming from the desert.

805gregg - 1-23-2008 at 09:02 AM

Danger is relative especially if you are the dead wife. Last time I was in Rosarito eating at my favorite carnitas place Las Flor de Michoacan I parked my camper on the side street so I could see my chairs straped on the back. We got a table where I could view the camper. 10 minutes later a guy came in and sat with his back to the window. We finished and went out to the back of the camper to let the boys in the back. That same guy walked by and stopped in disbelief. He had parked next to my truck and camper and his car was gone. He kept walking back and looking at the empty parking spot as if his car would reappear. I told him to get a bus to the border and report his car was parked in San Ysidro and stolen from there. Crime is relative I had a good surf trip to baja, that guy had a nightmare.

With your attitude toward it, plan to continue at that pace.

Also, this posting was addressed to Rosarito Nomads.

So in response, 20 years and the only problem has been watching someone's car get stolen in front of La Fonda. I got the parking spot when the car drove away. About 30 minutes later the owner of the stolen car was asking if the person (owning my car) had seen his car drive off.

In the same 20 years, I have witnessed many more acts of crime and violence in LA and Orange counties.

How GRINGO of you. You are one huge "PIECE OF WORK"

conquestkm - 1-24-2008 at 04:25 PM

I guess like any thing else you have to be aware of what you are doing and don't put your self at risk like leaving things in plain view in you car.No matter how old the car is use one of those theft bars for steering wheel .Having had a place down for many years I guess I have been lucky, just have not had a problem. Did get a ticket for making a wrong turn ,but I would have gotten that anywhere same problem ,But paid it at the police station. I always tell people try not to draw attention to yourself and dress down don't flash your jewelry . Always remember you are among people who sometimes look at you as the rich Americans and can afford to take the loss.

conquestkm - 1-24-2008 at 04:35 PM

By the way Up herein the bay area in my town of Pleasanton during the holiday season 63 cars were broken into and things taken

BajaGeoff - 1-24-2008 at 04:36 PM

I have been going to Baja for almost 20 years and have never had a bad experience in Rosarito. I have surfed most of the Rosarito coastline from the power plant down to La Fonda and have stayed in many of the hotels along that same stretch of coastline for work events and fun. I travel specifically to Rosarito at least twice a month for work, sometimes more. I always drive during the daylight hours and stay just a hair below the speed limit. So far so good.

Only once have I been pulled over by police.....this was maybe 10 years ago when I was driving down a dirt road south of K-38 to check the surf. I was polite and friendly with the officers and made small talk in Spanish while they searched my truck. They finished poking around in the cab and told us to have a nice day.

Those who steal are thieves. Don't let economic disparity cloud that fact. It's a moral decision. Most of Mexico has less than we do but, they all don't see an entitlement to a share of what we have. I would imagine that a US expat in Cabo, of common means, could covet the wealth of the more fortunate.
It's not enough of a reason for me to join the Communist party. I'd more inclined to join a militia in Montana.

I will stay away, thankyou.... I used to go every other week in the sixties.... now all I see is a squlid dump where once was just the Rosarito Beach Hotel... and a beautiful place it was.... now downtown is two or three miles of tawdry motels , street vendors, and beggers..... what you see in it I'll never know...but you know it does match your bitter heart.... I don't think I have ever read anything positive from you, just nasty judgemental BS from someone who obviously has much disapointment in what has become of his life. So, you just keep rotting away you dirty old bird.

The same thing was happening in malls in Orange County and Los Angeles County. 'Tis the season.

But Pleasanton is such a nice place. Looks like it goes on the boycott list along with Arizona and Irvine.

If that rash of burgleries happened in Rosarito, Al G., Hook and CaboRon would have smugly posted it dozens of times with embellishments trying to convince people the place was more dangerous than Baghdad.

Dannyrose and conquestkm, welcome to the board and have many future good times in Northern Baja, despite the bitter remarks of the know-it-alls.

marooonic.

It was when the owner of the car (from the US) came back into La Fonda asking about who owned the car in the spot he used to park his car, then I knew that the car driving away was being stolen. I got he and his buddies into my car along with their stuff and got them across the border that night, after making a report to the Rosarito Police. I followed up with the District Attorney of Rosarito the next day.

Menso, there are some of us who actually have embraced the way of life in Mexico without being an Ugly American. That aspect of life escapes you and some others.

The only reason cars stop for people crossing the street is that no one has car insurance- it's not required. You hit a person with you car with no insurance though and you're in big trouble.

Woooosh - 1-26-2008 at 11:40 AM

I built a house in downtown Rosarito six years ago on a piece of land my family owned. I'm a private, quiet sober kind of guy and in the six years, I've:

> Had a truck intentionally try to run me over on the beach one morning (yes, I can post a video)
> Had a false police report filed against me by that same idiot. (my security tape cleared me and sent accuser into hiding from the JPGE)
> One lame extortion attempt for $200
> One attempted kidanpping (I wasn't home but my camera caught the action and the detective at the JPGE said they were "delinquents who inteded to do me harm"and yes- I have the video)
> Had my truck stolen (from my garage no less)

Haven't had any problems with the police or even been stopped. Most of the problems I see are caused by the english-speaking mexican-born deportees who are scraping to get by. Thousands of then get dumped in TJ every year and they tend to rejoin their gang friends on the Mexican side to survive. This is a border area problem for sure- these guys are too lazy to head further south.

I do think the locals are getting peeed off that their jobs are being threatened by the crime and business is down 50%. That will compound once constructon slows, then stops on building projects that are under-funded. I do hear that construction materials (especially copper) are disappearing at an alarming rate- not sure if that's a new problem though (doubt it).

If you were to get pulled over in that area with your rig you would insist on going to the police station? I'm sure you would in TJ driving your rig through the streets of TJ. I'm sure if you were to make it to the station safely they would find a parking space for you. :light::o:light::o

Roberto - 1-27-2008 at 06:21 PM

I'm not Al, but yes, and yes. In fact, I have done exactly that, and recently. The cops are a bunch of cobardes y hombres de poco pantalones. And, they need to be reminded of that fact at every opportunity. The Mexicanos on this board will understand what I mean by that.

Of course, that's a lot easier for me, as a foreigner, to do than the folks who actually live there.
