When was the last time you got lost in Baja?

Von - 1-22-2008 at 09:57 PM

When?

How?

What?

And WHERE the Hell am I?

Barry A. - 1-22-2008 at 11:09 PM

Never, that I can recall.

fdt - 1-22-2008 at 11:13 PM

When? April 2005.

How? I decided to sleep after we left La Paz and say a prayer at the Virgen del 36 on our trip back north and asked Simone to drive.

What? Well she didn't make the right turn twards Loreto at Ciudad Insurgentes, she kept going straight.

Were the Hell am I? That's exactly what I said when I woke up and looked at the road, it seemed so narrow and the vegetation was creeping into the hwy. It took me a little while to figure out because there was no trafic either and a lot of potholes. I asked her were we were and of course she said "How should I know, I'm just driving"
So we stoped and then i figured what had happened, we were at Km 60 on the road to La Purisima :lol::lol:

Friend of mine got turned around just after crossing the border. He wound up back in the San Diego line. When the officer asked him if he had anything to declare, he said "yeah, I`m an idiot!!".

Trying to find the Sentri Lane at Otay after coming in from Blvd. 2000 from below Rosarito. I found two other border lanes before finding the right one.

Love it! That reminds me of when I left the CANACO office after a cross-border Chamber of Commerce Fiesta. The street it was on led straight to the border...but I was heading to my mom's in Rosarito.

I guess the only time I've been "lost" is in Tijuana...the rest of Baja is just an adventure...an unfolding of the road ahead...no agenda, no deadlines, just drive until it's time to camp, then start again in the morning.

I do not relate to the term "lost" in Baja.

vacaenbaja - 1-23-2008 at 01:21 AM

Sometime around 1988 on my first trip San Felipe. Got caught in one of those traffic circles in Mexicali and ended up
in some place that looked like an old western town. I had to stop to ask where I was. I think it was San Luis. I hate traffic circles.

4baja - 1-23-2008 at 06:49 AM

once trying to find otay border.

Osprey - 1-23-2008 at 07:54 AM

Never been lost but I have wandered around confused for 3 or 4 days.

Now that's funny Ferna.
My wife gets lost in the bathtub, so I know what you're talking about.:biggrin:

obafla - 1-23-2008 at 09:20 AM

My event was like Born Fisher. I was trying to get to Playas and I ended up near TJ airport. This happened several years ago, but, I see how easy it is to get lost in flow of traffic in TJ. It's like a rip tide.

DianaT - 1-23-2008 at 09:37 AM

Last time we got lost it was trying to find the border in Mexicali after driving there from Tijuana.

John claimed he never was "really" lost since he knows where the border crossing is, but we sure saw a lot of Mexicali before we found the line.

I am no help because I am definitely directionaly challenged.

Ferna, I bet you only asked for a safe trip, not a direct trip.:lol:

Got red light at first-ever border crossing at TJ, Sept 5, 2006. No prob as biggest curiosity was no snowshoes. They were from last minute closet clearing after selling my Denver house and moving stuff into storage 8/31/2006.

That stop helped me discover aduana for FMT. Would have missed it. Got back in traffic and was in Zona Rio, but, didn't know I was lost(typical guy behavior).

Afternoon sun on my right clued me in that I was not headed to ocean. Spent about 30 minutes navigating Tijuana. It did help me understand how to get un-lost in TJ, as that happens every other visit.

A few years ago, a friend and I wanted to go to El Volcan, which we knew was past El Marmol. We had stopped near the quarry for lunch and saw a road right in front of us, and without even discussing it, assumed that was the road out to El Volcan. It lead around a couple cerros, down into some arroyos, all around we could see short "roads" and it was pretty confusing. After wasting about 1/2 hour guessing that THAT one MUST be it, we decided to go down to the bottom of one of the hills on a narrow "road" just to look around - there was another branch of the quarry down there. There wasn't enough room to turn around once we decided to leave, and I began "road building" to give us room to maneuver. I cleared away a sand berm and put flat rocks in place for traction. We immediately got stuck in the sand, and twice more after that, sliding into a huge onyx boulder and scraping and denting the fender, and finally gunned it out of there up the hill. We had spent 3 hours doing all that, and decided to find the El Volcan road another time. BTW, I found several scraper tools around where we had gotten stuck. And all those "roads" ? just access trails for the heavy machinery into the quarry.

Last night, coming home from Sharkys. I ended up at the Bufadora Bar and Grill. My truck has auto-pilot.

Paulina - 1-23-2008 at 10:27 AM

Trying to find Las Flores grave yard sin headlights, letting the full moon guide me. We weren't really lost, only the passengers in the back seat (who had never been there before) thought so.

Lost in Fog

Skipjack Joe - 1-23-2008 at 10:33 AM

At San Roques I headed out in a thick fog to the island directly in front of us. I figured I couldn't miss the darn thing. I just kept going for about 45 minutes figuring I should be there by then. We stopped, looked around at the grey around us and tried to get our bearings from the sun. Then we went on again for another 20 minutes or so. Still no island. I must of missed it I told Alex. We debated about what to do. I decided to follow the waves back towards where we started. After a really long ride I spotted another boat. It turned out to be Juan with his client Santiago, but I didn't know that. At almost the same time we saw the southern tip of the island, which by now was to the north of us. We stayed close to it from then on and eventually hooked up with them at the north end of the island, still not knowing who they were.

Three days later Santiago came by and I told him about it. We stood at the beach looking at the island and he said:

"How could you have missed that thing?"

Packoderm - 1-23-2008 at 10:35 AM

Usually when I'm trying to find the border on my way back home. How is it that the U.S. can make finding the border sooooooo much easier than the other way?

bajadock - 1-23-2008 at 10:45 AM

But, Dennis, how did you kayak all the way around the point to get home?

DENNIS - 1-23-2008 at 10:47 AM

I'm still there.

I made the same mistake except it was southbound, only 3 weeks ago. How did I miss the sign and made that right turn instead of left is still a mistery. We kept on going and after about 60 miles I pulled over to chek on the map after spotting a sign to La Purisima.

BAJACAT - 1-23-2008 at 08:00 PM

I was leaving La Paz going towards Cabo San Lucas. I took the firts left and end up going to Los Planes.I had to go across the sierra until I reach San Antonio, and then to CSL.Of course I never told my wife I was lost.hehehe

Oso - 1-23-2008 at 08:13 PM

Last November coming back from the race.

I took the "shortcut" from above Colonet to Valle Trinidad but took a left fork, beguiled by freshly graded roads, thinking "cool. they've improved this route" Well they improved a route into an Ag valley with tons of onions...

Oso - 1-23-2008 at 08:24 PM

No picture? Well anyway I was seduced by the improved road to the onion fields and ended up at a dead end. Backtracking I found where I should have gone to the right a bit further past the "Peor es Nada" store on the unimproved road to V. Trinidad. On reflection, this is only a shortcut in terms of mileage, possible gasoline expenditure and relative "adventure". In terms of time, it's probably a wash. This road has not been scraped in recent years. It is passable without 4wd, but very rough in places, a bit hairy in places and very very slow.

We got lost somewhere around La Paz.

BMG - 1-23-2008 at 08:31 PM

Decided to buy a house so now instead of lost, we're home.

Cervisin - 1-23-2008 at 08:55 PM

..geeze - I'm lost since I'm here...

Well, to be completely honest, I would probably have run into you if it wasn't for Juan and his hand held GPS. When the fog lifted a bit I do remember thinking "Wow - who is this guy in a tin boat and a kid wondering around out here?" Funny how the island seems huge from shore but tiny when it's pea soup......
