Fire in Todos Santos

Marie-Rose - 1-23-2008 at 08:47 PM

Apparently there is a rather large fire burning in Todos Santos tonight. Unable to
make contact with the daughter as our internet is down. Anyone know where it
is?

Don't know where tha fire was..... I will drive around later today and see if I can find it .... I do recall an unusual number of sirens over a long period last night.... and thinking that it was sounding like La Paz .... but never thought to check into it.

Thanks Ron... and Acuity. Heard the hija had a "birds eye" view of it so am thinking it
was somewhere around the soccer field?
I am sure no news is good news:yes:

My latest "news reporter" says that the fire was north of La Canada del Diablo and was "huge". We overlook the soccer field so I guess we really did have a "birds eye" view:o
Glad it did not go up the hill!!

Were any residences or commercial locations lost or was it just palms. That whole area seems to go up in flames every 5 or so years because the palms are so prolific and packed in.

10 years ago it was not much of a problem but it has always given me the shivers to see all the new construction going on in there. Thinking about past fires I have seen in that area I shudder at the thought of what the next ones will bring.

No news yet...I sent an email to Chuck who is on the fringe of the palm grove...waiting to hear.....if he does not answer quick, I will get real worried.:(:(:wow:

Trimming the dead fronds from palms to prevent fires isn't that difficult.:bounce: Looks neat and prevents fires.:D

That is very true, and a real preventative measure for fires, however the area in question has literally thousands of palms and I don't believe the city (I guess La Paz has jurisdiction) has the money or inclination to manicure the huerta. This is, I believe, an ancient huerta (grove) that is really beautiful, and as you drive into Todos Santos it takes your breath away.

PS: I didn't get up to that area today... hopefully someone else will post a more thorough report.

Heard from Chuck and Suz...
Hi Al, now where did you hear about our fire so
fast??? We were on the roof with the hose but it
didn't get closer than 2 blocks away, the whole end of
Las Quintas was on fire, it goes up those palms and
explodes, pretty exciting, it was hard to get to it
because it is all grown in down there,****************

"Anyhow chuck kept drinking
beer so if it did come closer I don't know how much
help he would have been......"

Maybe he was just getting ready in case the water got turned off:lol::lol::lol:
I had to edit, because she was talking of a person she suspects started it...I think mostly joking. Anyway knowing the area, i think some to most of the Palm forest is gone, But may have just been around Sergio's place he caretakes....he is our TS colorful...unusual individual:lol:
I will ask how much burned...I am sure no dwellings...she would have said something. Albert

Ahhhh, nature's gardener trimmed the dead fronds.

The palms will probably make it. When they are that thick, there are seeds around that will regerminate. And their core is tough to reach.

Bajabus - 1-25-2008 at 01:57 PM

I am sure they will make it. This whole grove goes up in flames every 5 to 10 years.
