ID giant moth

Anybody know what this is? Must have been a huge catapiller. That's a 2X4 it's sitting on. Taken at Bahia de los Angeles in August.

It could be this one.....Ceanothus silkmoth
Hyalophora euryalus.

We used to see them quite a bit in the warmer months...during moonlit nights on the patio. I had a cat once who would jump up about 4 feet and snag a few to eat. Found just the wings outstretched on the flagstones the next day..must be tasty.

Black Witch (Ascalapha odorata)
A bat-like moth in the family Noctuidae. Black Witch moth are common to abundant throughout the New World tropics (south to Brazil).

The Black Witch (Ascalapha odorata) is the largest moth, if not the largest insect, north of Mexico. It is often mistaken for a bat which it somewhat resembles. It has a wing span up to 7 inches. The females are slightly larger and lighter than males and have a pale median band through their wings.

Looks like Ascalapha odorata or black witch moth. Tons of them in Sur.

Black witch it is - Ken's are an Owls Eyes and Atlas moth (largest lepidopteran)
