I'm trying to get a feel for what's right and wrong. Recently I've been shocked to see gringos displaying the American flag very prominantly on their houses and vehicles. I remember from an old Amigos' post that this was considered an afront or insult by the citizens of Mexico which I can fully understand.
2 questions:
1. What is the legality here. In the same post I remember that even citizens could not fly the Mexican flag - only on offical goverment property. This true?
2. I'm curious how Mexicanos feel about this? I realize you can't lump everyone together south of the border any more than you can north - just trying to get a general feel.

1. i think you're right.
2. anyone flying colors from another nation in the face of their hosts is asking for trouble, in my mind. stickers on a vehicle is a non issue, but flying another nation's flag over your casita......a slap in the face to the locals.

I'm not positive but I think I read somewhere that it's contra la ley to display the flag of another nation in Mex.

According to generally accepted international protocol, it is perfectly ok to display any flag you like as long as the flag of the host country is displayed above or to the right of any other flag.

The rules should be followed as Oso states above. Unfortunately that doesn't happen where I live, sad really.

I had a Mexican flag bandana on my bullmastiff on the beach. An officer came up to us, very upset and took the bandana off of Rosie, fussing the whole while, and walked away with it.

Someone who understood what the officer was saying told me that I was showing disrespect for the flag and the country of Mexico by putting the bandana on my dog.

It was an honest mistake. I had no idea. I was fired as Rosie's wardrobe consultant.

My wife printed her own business cards with the Mexican flag as background. When, handing one to a immigration officer in La Paz, was, in a friendly way, told, that this was illegal. No idea if this goes for natives as well, but I think so. :?:

I know that in case a ship sails through a foreign country, the host country's flag is flown above the ship's country of origin. That's anywhere in the world as far as I know. :?:

BTW---back on topic. We have always heard that flying another flag in Mexico as against the law---does anyone know for sure??

When I run up the flags, topmost is the Mexican Flag, next the U.S. flag at about 3/4 size, then any others.

The only pertinent comments have both come from Mexicans, one an immigration official. He pronounced it correcto and showing the proper respect.

For all of the mixed messages I've heard over the years regarding LEGAL practice, my flags have been there while Government officials, Army patrols and Many, Many Mexicans have gone through.

I've never had a negative comment or experience.

Exactamundo! Also, there is a difference between the actual flag and just the three colors. Sometimes called bunting, they can be displayed any number of ways, same as here.

An exception to the under or left of host country placement is at the official embassy or consulate of any foreign nation. These places, even if leased, are considered to be the soil of that nation and only its own flag is flown.
