1st time taking a BUS to San Igancio/Mulege

plaing - 2-5-2008 at 01:28 PM

Hi Everyone:
I am brand new to this board and have joined in the hope I can plan a last minute trip to do some whale watching and reseach the possibility of leading a group there next winter.

1)I would like to take a bus from TJ to San Ignacio,BCS (round trip) but I do not know price or times of departure from either end.

2)Once in San Ignacio, I need a place to stay that is clean but cheap.

3)Is is possible to hitch a ride to the lagoon to have a whale watching session? Cost?

4)Is it possible to meet some of the various operators there to see who I might use to bring a group there next winter?

There are a few and some are more sensitive and experienced to the needs of a group that are part of a workshop

5) Are there any hotels in San Ignacio that have a conference room with a working TV and DVD player? Part of my presentation requires that and it will determine if I must hold the workshop portion of this project in San Ignacio or Loreto.

I would like to leave some time late next week anytime after the 15th of February and maybe stay for a week. I really need to travel sparsely, next year is a different story.

How could I get to Mulege? My friend is living at the VillaMaria Isabell RV Park working as a massage therapist. I would like to visit her.

Any help more experienced members can give me would be greatly appreciated.
Thank,
Phil

Hi Phil...we stay at La Posada, which is about $25 for one person and is nice and quiet...go past the mission and hang a left. You should go see Juanita, a wonderful lady who owns Casa Leree just off the plaza and she has a big space and gorgeous rooms but more expensive. Just hangin out talking to folks maybe you can hitch a ride, nearly every campsite has vans that go out to the lagoon...take clients there. The buses leave TJ at various hours...the 8;00 bus is good as you sleep on the bus and get into san ignacio at breakfast. I also noticed a new little hotel just across from the bus stop on the right as you head towards san ignacio village...it has a chinese name I think...looks cheap but will have highway noise and is far from town...call me if you like when you are around this area....160-0289...have fun!

Shari, ah so, I think that that new place is called motelito.
There used to be a lady right on the square who rented rooms.
Desert Inn probably has meeting rooms.
Or ask Juanita at Casa Leree. She would know. Ask her anything she is the resident expert on San Ignacio and a charming lady to boot.

The bus would be your best bet to Mulege unless you can find someone headed that way. If you talk to the bus driver, he might let you out closer to that RV park than the bus station.

Buen Viaje

A couple more questions about San Ignacio?

Thank you Baja Judy and Shari:

I can get a bus and ride it R/T for about $169. (TJ to San Ign.)!

Now to contact these places to see if they have vacancies or require reservations.

I dont know exactly what day I am leaving.
Does La Posada have a telephone or website?

Does Casa Leree? What is the price of Casa Leree(approx)?

If I haul my luggage from the bus station, can I walk to these motels/rooms?

Is the Desert Inn the former Govt. hotel chain?

If I hitch a ride to the Lagoon, is it possible to meet and talk with whale watching tour operators (the principals) or do they stay/live in San Ignacio or Mulege.?
And since this is "whale season", will motel occupancy be a problem?

I'm looking forward to relaxing and digging the area again :)

Thank you again for your help,
Phil

Doubt you'd need reservations we've always been able find a room in San Ignacio
As for the Whale watching you can book a tour from town and ride in a van out to the lagoon or hitch a ride out the Kuyima Whale watching station We've camped there a few times. I bet if you hung around in town at the square in front of the Mission that you could find a ride out to kuyima in no time
Could probibly find a ride to Mulege from there too.
How much luggage you have/dont have might make a difference

Thanks BajaDanD:
I plan to travel light. Just not sure what to do once I get off the bus or in which direction I need to walk and how far. Luggage is luggage after all. I dont have a backpack with me.

Thanks for taking time to respond. Anybody else with some info on my questions above?

Gracias,
Phil

Stay at the San Ignacio Springs Bed and Breakfast , it is a much shorter walk from the bus stop on the highway than the walk all the way into town. And the hospitality is just great !

Also Discover Baja in San Diego can make your reservations and save you 10% .....

In San Ignacio a few years ago, I stayed at the lady's place right across the street from the mission. I think it was about $25.00 U.S. You eat meals with the family but order from the menu. I enjoyed it.
