If you really get tired of him he's welcome at our fountain anytime!
He has now been on our fountain three times. The last time (which I didn't capture, unfortunately), he sat on the very top. When the water was off,
of course
He's also appeared in one of our palm trees, and I see him (her?) drifting overhead in our neighborhood.
And really, I don't grow tired of it. But I wish we could potty train him.Osprey - 2-10-2008 at 09:11 AM
Now that I look closer (a little bit of pure white zone appears in one photo) I agree with Bornfisher -- a zone-tail. The cere is yellow on both
birds so without the zone stripe it's a toss up.BajaHawk - 2-10-2008 at 01:18 PM
Harris' Hawks are not so stark black (more brown/bronze on the shoulder and legs - giving it a two tone color) also not as robust.
Range of Zone tailed is most of Baja, except northern 1/5 - similar to Harris' Hawks.

Cool bird to have hanging around.Acuity - 2-11-2008 at 01:08 PM
If, as the write-up suggests, the zone-tailed hawk mimics the turkey vultures to fool its prey, the birds in our yard have clued in. They don't show
themselves when the hawk is around!baja-spirit - 2-11-2008 at 01:10 PM
