Crabs Fishing

wakemall - 2-7-2008 at 09:47 PM

Does the Sea of Cortez have any decent crabs to fish for? I was thinking about taking my Dung crab traps down to my house in Loreto.

I know Lobster are off limit.

Appreciate any comments..

Thank you.

you can take fin fish and squid, thats it legaly. we do take shell fish for our own consumption while there.

4baja has it right - seems to be 'ok' to take a few clams for personal consumption. I'ld be leery of taking anything with a claw though.

Calms are illegal but commonly taken. That could change, so you take your chances. Enforcement in general seems more common and more by the book in the Loreto area recently.

squid are mulloscs -- illegal in Mexico. Read your license.

A different abbreviation for Dungeness crabs might be in order.......

Ask the guys from California who were camped at Juncalito and got caught by the National Park rangers with some purple lipped scallops and a couple of lobster. Ended up paying about $1500 US for that little excursion.
On the other hand we were told by Pesca that it was legal for us to catch squid for the Governer's Cup Tournament at Santa Rosalia on a sport fishing license.
So I understand the law to read that you cannot collect clams or crabs but the weakness of the system is enforcement.

It has been said that, whichever Authority
that you are dealing with in Mex,
makes the interpertation of the
Mex Laws/Rules as he knows them,
lots of grey area, to Tourist cards,
fishing regs, etc., some little
known fishing regs, which 'may apply,
may not', that have been listed
in the past include, no take
of the popular bass type
fin fish Cabrilla, which I believe
is set aside for Mex Commercial
pangeros, a limit of 2 dorado,
as posted no crustaceans or
mollusks

Since Dungeness are the best crabs in the world, why bother, you got the best at home and those nets are cumbersome.

Now speaking of seafood, if you have not yet tried the Lion Paw Scallop cooked in butter and garlic, you have a taste treat coming to you.

Thanks for the response. Will leave the traps at home..... The Loreto Profepa folks are my friends and they come by the house quite often for a cup of coffee or a beer.
