Checking Boat OUT of Mexico

heidi - 2-8-2008 at 06:52 PM

We have had our boat in Baja for 2 1/2 years and are now going to be sailing back to the US. I am looking for info on the new CHECK OUT (AKA Zarpe) procedures.

We are looking to check out of La Paz and round the cape and go up to San Diego. We are not in LP now but I am trying to get the info together so that when we get TO La Paz we aren't running all over town!

Any info would be helpful.

I haven't done this personally so I hope someone else will chime in. I understand that you can get your Temporary Import Permit at Pinchilingue by the ferry terminal so I would assume you start at the same place when leaving.

Checking out is easier than checking in. If you’re in a marina, just tell the marina office

If you’re not in a marina, take all the papers you used to clear in to the Port Captain, tell him your clearing out to the USA. He will take care of the paper work to check you out.

The paper work includes:

The vessels document

Your clearance papers (when you cleared into Mexico)
For the return crew list, you’ll need a list of names of the persons making the trip.

When you arrive San Diego, you have to clear into the US with US Customs at the West end of Shelter Island, the San Diego Harbor Police dock. There’s a telephone at the top of the ramp and the number to call, no charge, it’s a direct number.

Thanks for your answer When we are in LP, I'll stop in at the marina office. It was a bit of a run around when we had to get the TIP so I wanted to have as much info beforehand as possible. I already got our new decal from CBP so that getting back into the US should be a little smoother.

I knew I could count on Baja Nomads for answers!
