shari - 2-9-2008 at 07:45 AM
NOthing here that I know of...5.4 would wake you up! LOvely weather though finally.
David K - 2-9-2008 at 08:31 AM
Didn't feel anything here Phil, and I am 400 miles closer to Mexical than is Shari.

The quake that struck around 11:15 p.m. Friday had a preliminary magnitude of 5.4, said Jessica Sigala, a geophysicist with the U.S. Geological Survey
in Golden, Co. It was centered 16 miles southeast of the border town of Mexicali and about 100 miles east of Tijuana.
"It has been felt pretty widely in Southern California, southwestern Arizona and probably northern Mexico," Sigala said.
It was followed by at least 15 aftershocks, including four with preliminary magnitudes of 3.8, 3.6, 3.5 and 3.0.

That would be close to the Geothermal plant.

LOS ANGELES, California (AP) -- A moderate earthquake rocked Baja California in Mexico, shutting down factories near the U.S. border and leaving about
400,000 people without power, authorities said Saturday. No major damage or injuries were immediately reported.
The quake that struck around 11:15 p.m. Friday had a preliminary magnitude of 5.4, said Jessica Sigala, a geophysicist with the U.S. Geological Survey
in Golden, Colorado.
The quake left about 400,000 people without electricity and 1.2 million without cellular telephone service, said Fire Capt. Rene Rosado, director of
civil defense in Mexicali.
About 80,000 workers were evacuated or were unable to enter factories for Sony Corp., Honeywell International Inc. and other major corporations that
typically run 24 hours a day until the buildings could be checked for damage, he said.
Two bridges showed 2- to 3-inch cracks and were closed until engineers could assess their safety, he said.
The Baja peninsula is a geologically active region. In 2006, a magnitude 5.4 temblor struck the Mexicali area, but there were no injuries or damage.

Didn't feel a thing here in San Felipe and we're close enough!
Bajajorge - 2-10-2008 at 09:30 AM
They're still feeling aftershocks today in the 1-2 range.
Mango - 2-11-2008 at 01:11 AM
I've been up north; but, accoding to my girlfriend:
The power went out, followed by serious shaking a few second later. Many things fell down or were knocked off the shelves. There was an afterschock
that was pretty large as well.
The power was out overnight; but, was promptly restored the next morning. It's was a scare, a few more cracks in the walls, but everyone seems to be
doing ok. Pretty much everyone is ok. Just a big reminder of where/how we live on this edge of the "ring of fire".
Bajajorge - 2-11-2008 at 09:55 AM
There was a 3.3 aftershock about 6AM, 2/11/08 just southeast of Mexicali in Guadalupe Victoria according to the USGS.

Radio reported another quake today about 10:30 am Mon., a 5.1. Things are a moving under Mexicali!

NPR just reported the quakes, too. (but of course I already knew about them because of the Nomads!)

Talked to a friend next to our house on the rio hardy and he said that he didn't feel a thing.

Just had two good sized aftershocks. 4.0 and 5.0 around 8:30pm and 8:40pm.
Power may have been knocked out as well, as I am unable to get though on the phone(our phone requires power)
Update: Power is now back on. It was just out for about 30 minutes or so.

I heard they are closing the schools in MXL tomorrow and that the Governor is making announcements. They are preparing for a 7.0 or larger earthquake
between 11:00pm-5:00am. I live in El Centro and have been feeling them today as well as the one Friday night while I was in San Luis.
Have you heard any official announcements made ? The local news here hasn't said anything..
Mango - 2-11-2008 at 10:54 PM
I'm up north working right now. So I'm a little out of the loop. According to the USGS website there is less than a 10% chance of a 5+ magnitude
quake in the next 7 days.
So, I'd be curious to figure out what the Mexicans know that we don't. I did read in one news report that a wall collapsed at one school, and there
was a gas leak at another (This happened Friday).
I hope these wind down soon...
According to the website of "La Voz" there will be no school tomorrow. I'll have to dig into it a bit more regarding the 7.0 prediction, etc..

On the USGS earthquake map of Calif. , which indicates quakes over one week, there are 764 on the map now. The average is about 500. You can see a
lot of activity along the San Andreas fault.

Oh my word! Here the church and schools were closed for a couple months when the earthquakes were present...classes and services were held
outside...just in case..although we were told there was no way anyone could predict when an earthquake would happen.
wilderone - 2-19-2008 at 04:50 PM
Another 5.0 this afternoon.

Quake and aftershocks hit border region again
6:53 a.m. February 20, 2008
CALEXICO: An earthquake swarm rattling for nearly two weeks under the border unleashed another jolt and numerous aftershocks yesterday.
The day's biggest quake struck at 2:41 p.m., centered in Mexico about 20 miles southeast of Calexico. No injuries or damage were reported in Imperial
County, authorities said.
The U.S. Geological Survey said the quake was a magnitude 5.0.
It was the fourth moderate quake since the swarm began Feb. 8. –A.P.

been there....done that! It is nerve racking. I feel for all of you in that area. Ours lasted months and we sort of got used to them and learned that
we need to build to withstand more shakes. Interesting how they use bee related words...the small faults here were refered to as hives.
bajalou - 2-20-2008 at 05:07 PM
Mexicali schools closed and lots of phones out.

We were at Rio Bend RV park west of El Centro at the time. I was sitting in my truck when it started & thought Vanda was jumping up & down on
the rear bumper. I yelled at her & she came running out of the rig screaming. She'd never been in a quake before. Got out of the truck & it
felt just like those funhouses at the fair with the oscillating floors. I was definitely ROTFL then!!!
Felt about 5 aftershocks thru the afternoon & evening. What a day!!!
