Here are some shots of California sealions in Baja, from our last trip... :bounce:

Notice the bite marks on this one...

Greg,

Isn't it amazing how those sea lions can roll around on those barnacles without leaving a mark on their bodies? If I did the same my skin would look like it had been shreaded with razor blades.

Maybe it's their fur that protects them. It's so smooth it looks like bare skin.

Very nice sea lions, Greg. Of course we all know they're sea lions because they have those cute little ears. Could use some whitestrips, though, for the teeth.

Thanks everyone! Nice photos Nena and David - where were those taken? Ken was close - my shots were taken at Isla Calaveras in BLA last October... Skipjack - speaking of rough barnacles, did you see the puncture wounds on the sea lion in the second photo? Ouch!

Greg - Mine was taken in Bahia Magdalena. The lobo marina in my photo was a big one. When we approached, this buoy was filled with smaller sea lions. Then the huge one decided to get on, too.

During his first couple of attempts up all the lesser sea lions on that side fell off an into the water, so steep became the angle of the 'deck'. While he was regrouping, they swam around to the other side and jumped up. But as the big guy pulled himself up this last time, it was sea lion scramble - everyone smaller was sliding and falling into the water. There was much commotion.

After he had the entire buoy to himself he pruned and barked loudly, as shown in my first photo.

An added comment about this photo. If you look at the neck of the sea lion at the back you'll see there's a good length of netting tangled tightly and permanently around his neck. Our panguero Martin said this would be the ultimate cause of his death.

Greg, mine was taken on the beach just south of Punta Lobos on the 'Seven Sisters' coast...
