we'll be passing thru in a few days and i was wondering......

when, where and how much is this? i remember reading about this at serenidad? or somewhere and if the timing is right would love to show my wife a good time in between dusty, bumpy dirt roads to "nowhere!"

Yes at Serenidad every Saturday night. Usually lots of flying doctors and nurses in after completing their clinics. Music with a big band and dancing under the stars.
I think it costs about $15.00 U.S. (can never remember) and it includes your first margarita with the buffet meal.

my wife wants to know when does the "pre-party" begin?????? when is the pig ready to join the fun?

its $14.00 U.S per person and does include one margarita, usually gets started at 05:30 - 06:00 pm with dinner usually served around 07:00.
the "pre-party"starts when you get there !!!

They did quit doing this for awhile didn't they? I know when we were living there last year or maybe it was the year before they said they hadn't done it for awhile

no - they only missed when the ejido illegally squatted the resort for 18 months several years ago. they only stop it 4 weekends during each sept when the kitchen staff go on break.

been 40 years plus of pigs, that's 1900 porkers that gave their all for the superior race, we human beans.

our timing is still unknown (makes for great surf trips) at this time so i don't know if we'll be passing thru on saturday for the party, but i wanted an option just in case.

it seems that the best decisions are always made at the last minute! :cool:

edit: leaving for barstow and the money printing machine that is my job. T minus 85 hours until shove off. then wehead downstream for 10 days of sun, surf, and suds.....and some whales, oh and the croaker better be wary!!!! i gotta world record to smash. :light:

I was a participant 2 Saturdays ago and it was $15...and the Band was a very good guitarist. The people danced their butts off for some time.
The pig was great and ask for a rib....you will not need a second trip to the serving line. I got to watch the Budweiser shootout while eating.
I should have been watching the women though :lol:

well don must have raised the price again or i had a brain fart , i heard the "mariachi band" was asking more than the hotel wanted to pay (too bad) they were a tradition there. not a place i frequent, but a nice place to take our friends & family when they visit. and one more thing there is no smoking in the bar or restaurant.

Well, it's certainly a question of standards whether or not you think the margaritas in the Serenidad are worth the money. I do think they are poor. The shots they are using for making a margarita are so tiny.......it's only a drop in there. You need at least 6 or 8 shots to make the margarita taste good. But they are only using 4 shots. Get a margarita @ the Equipales in town and you'll see and taste a real margarita . And about the pig roast??? Well lots of beans and other side stuff and little meat to my understanding.
Again, a question of standards. If your eating standards are somehow average, then the pig roast is not good for you.
Lots of folks on a Saturday means small portions. Selfunderstanding.
As the joke goes: The cook looks out of the kitchen window looking at the bus just arriving. Jelling at his line cook: "Get the bucket and fill it w/ water and stretch the soup".

TP - you obviously haven't had Alex's margaritas at the bar there.
there is SO much booze in them i can only take about 2 and if i do 3 - well good night irene.........
and i am talking the grande size. the chicas are too small but potent and taste good anyway. you get a free chica with the pig feed, a good deal.
the pig out is all you can eat, the pork is delicious, the sides are wonderful and plentiful. its a huge deal at $15 for an included alcoholic drink and all you can eat BBQ.
try and find one in USA, you won't and certainly not one that gives liquor in the deal.

i have had a marg at Francisco's equilpales several times and wasn't impressed as compared to what i have been served 27 years running at Johnson's place!!
so - we have to disagree pardner.
i have flown groups, friends, relatives, clients et al into Serenidad for 27 years and without exception they have all said how tasty and potent the margs at the bar are!! In fact other than the ones i make at home here in AZ we never order margs out at bars/restaurants in the states because they mostly suck! viva la Serenidad's margs and porker feed!

All I can say is that the pig roast and the margaritas must vary, depending on ???????

My experience was much like TPs. You were NOT allowed to go back for seconds and the portion was pretty small for the 12.00 at the time.

And, yes, the margs associated with the pig roast were really weak.

I've had the margs from Alex at the bar and there is no comparison. They are much stronger.

Maybe you're getting "pilot's privileges", Mike.

ok - on the small margs served with the roast, yes they batch them up because of crowds but the ones i had were ok, maybe not like Alex does and yes he doctors them even higher Rx if he knows you - but its in his interest to treat you to a strong tasty one if yur a 1st timer too cause you'll order more and tip more, so - pork Kay no??

the only time i saw no seconds was when they waited long enuff and started to put away the line or the food got all eaten by ending time and everyone had plenty of chances to go back.

for me its like the whales trips to SIL, done it so much i never do it anymore, just take people and sit and wait for them.
with the pig roast we only go if special friends/family are with us and they want to do it. And after wards i feel like it was a great experience all over again. maybe twice a year, that's all anymore.

Well, as I said: it's a question of your personal (eating and drinking)standards. Mine are average. Therefore I'm not happy with what I've been served @ the Serenidad. Period.

Alejandros margaritas are 4 (tiny) shots as long as Don Johnson is around and depends on whether or not he knows you. As soon as he likes you or knows you better, he is givin' an extra splash into your margarita.
But even then , no comparison to those in the Equipales. Those are damn strong. Sometimes too strong.
Those in the Serenidad are somehow good for Non-Alcoholics.
Q to Mike: are you sure that you are coming sauber to the pigroast?? Or do you got already your level and b/c of that feel the margaritas are good enough "to finish you off"?
Well, we met @ the Serenidad a couple of times and I always had the feeling you are constantly "at some level".
Am I wrong?

i have never seen Alex pour into the blender using "shots", he free pours.

i would be happy to engage you with more spirited conversation - and we'll see who's margs are better - the hotel's or your restaurant's. :rolleyes:

I think its good. The rooms are B+ and they allowed our Labrador. We had been snacking all day in the rig driving and so I wasn't famished. One of the waiters asked twice if I was going back for seconds.
The little margs sucked, especially comparing them to Ricardos at Rice and Beans in San Ignacio which IMO are the best on earth.
Los Ecipales in town is also very good.

It's been a long time for me but I used to absolutely love the Serenidad pig roasts. Never had any problem with either the servings or the margaritas, it was all good. One Saturday the Sams were in for a dental clinic in Serenidad. They finished up working on a lot of people, mostly kids, all day Saturday and were ready to roll at the pigfeast. Just as things got moving, the hotel had a big power failure. Not to be denied, the Sams all put on their headlamps. The scene in the bar was surreal, phsycedelic (sp?), and, I think, it was the start of disco. Good time had by all. The power went on in about an hour. Everybody was disappointed.
