Got Mud?

fishuntr - 4-7-2004 at 11:46 AM

I'm going down to BOLA area next week fir a little exploring. Has anybody been over the "dry" lake W of the Bay recently? I want to go over to Remedios area and Las Candelares. I wonder if I'm going to need my PullPal.

Also has anybody been in to Misson Santa Maria lately? I'm wondering if I will need a snorkle on my Toy getting through the bog at the bottom of Widowmaker. Any recent info will be helpful. Also anybody wanting to join us will be welcome. Capable 4X required:biggrin:

BOLA dry lake

We were there two weeks ago, did not venture on the dry lake but things in the area are very dry, notwithstanding a nice wet winter,
we drove up and hiked to Yubay and the baths were down about 2 feet and pretty stagnant, indicating that not much precip. or wetness in recent weeks.
On the other hand, I rather brazenly (foolishly) took the shortcut back from Yubay, ended up buried in deep sand in the wash just before the highway.
Quite an indignity for an old Baja racer to have to wait on a battered Dodge 4 x 4 to pull me out.... ah well.

Fishuntr, even with water on the lakebed, you wouldn't get stuck if you stay on the main track. The kids and I went north to Remedios/Guadalupe and over the next (not so) dry lake to Arroyo los Candeleros to the gulf. This is an incredible painted gorge, you must go! http://davidksbaja.com/1202 I think it's great you are returning to Santa Maria a year from last time... Be careful of Rattlers!!!

thebajarunner, that 'short cut' is the original road. When we left Yubay in 2001, Mike Humfreville wanted to go that way... as soon as we dropped into the arroyo his poor old truck POT (2WD) went no more! I was piloting the 4WD Viva Baja van, and we pulled him out to the pavement.
A great dinner that night at Las Hamacas added to one great day in Baja!

And the "rest of the story" ??????

Did anyone ever do a trip report on that adventure? We were gone so long I never saw one.

How about having to lock up the brakes on the van when Mike H. locked up his in the middle of the hwy. ,and almost got ?how many pounds of Viva Baja Van in his rear, you put that thing side ways, along with the 15 of us in it).

Aside from the terror....what a great trip that was! :)

candelero

I drove out to punta candelero the end of feb. The drive was dry and easy. 4X4 was necessary when I entered the canyons. Sure is nice and quiet out that way, lots of wide open spaces and no people. fishin rich

LABay roads

David K, now you tell me!!
Whoa, when I got to the end of the nice fast sandy descent from Yubay and hit the bottom of that wash, by the third very large 'whoopie' I knew I was in trouble.
The sand was really deep in the bottom of the "whoops" and we were buried real quickly.
I suspect that this stretch was used in the last 1000 but rains should have smoothed and packed it since then, it is just one really soft and sandy mother.
Right next to the wash/road the footing is firm so we just winched up over the side of the wash, and drove straight back up the hill.
Ah Baja, nothing like it!

it was sad to see such a broken man

Takes one to know one

BV should know, he was sitting right next to me, egging me on.
So, how come he waits three weeks to rub it in???
Could it be that yesterday after our Yosemite hike that he drank all of our beer, then insisted on numerous stops en route back home to replenish supplies, all the while complaining that the original supply was meager, and lacking.
(and this was the leader who arranged for us to take 901 beers to LABay last month.... yep, you got it, 901 for 13 guys)
