Barry A. - 2-23-2008 at 06:19 PM

Lived in Bear Valley in No. Cal, between the years of 1971 and 76, or close. It was a lovely small town, walk or ski to your house, many being a quarter mile up the valley. It is like a huge bowl so to speak, and in the winter, you cannot drive to your house.Park at the lodge, buy your groceries at the general store, load the groceries in your backpack, but put them on front of you so you can put the baby on your back! Then load the other two little ones on a sled and haul it all home.It was quite a challenge when the snowfall covered the house, sometimes five feet of snow would fall during the day, and I had to tunnel to get into the house.Boy was I in good shape then!!That was after skiing all day, five days a week! Life was wild and good.:bounce: Great memories, and I miss the N. California lifestyle.

Fatboy - 2-23-2008 at 08:28 PM

Hard for me to consider anything south of Sacramento NORTHERN California as I type this out in Redding, but oh well...

WHOA 1 more post and I hit a hundred!!!! :P

Congratulations Fatboy...part of the reason for responding is that I'm closing in on 1000, and I want to get there before I leave for Baja in LESS THAN TWO WEEKS.:P:P:P:P

I can think of about a dozen Baja addicts here in Mt. Shasta. I don't know of any Nomads other than lurkers.

castaway$ - 2-23-2008 at 08:53 PM

We have so many Californians here in southern Oregon I think I qualify! :P

bajabound2005 - 2-23-2008 at 09:26 PM

was in Sacramento; now in Baja full-time...OH, before Sacratomato;, Fresno, before that, Sacramento again...before that BOSTON and before that Los ANgeles, and before that Boston and before that VERMONT....and before that MONTANA and before that Los Angeles and before that Sacramento....is there a pattern there???

Yep, I been reading about your upcoming trip and the new and lowered DR. I am going to have to do another dualsport ride in baja soon. Maybe the Pacific Coast between El Rosario and Guerro Negro.

As to the comments about addicts, I have meet several coming into my work the last couple of months so I know that there is way more than Barry A. and I here in Redding.

Have fun and I will be watching for that 1000th's post!!!

vandenberg - 2-24-2008 at 09:07 AM

25 years in Sacramento/ Carmichael, now in Loreto/ Nopolo/ Loreto Bay ? permanent.
Only thing I miss about Sac. is the relative cheap golf fees.
And people complain about the hot summers here in Loreto, but the high temperature on my porch very seldom gets over 95 ,while for weeks the temperatures in the central valleys in California top the century mark. And that's "HOT" folks, never mind the "IT"S DRY HEAT" claim.
Barry in Redding should be able to attest to that, since he's in the hottest spot in the valley.

Orinda--east side of the Oakland/Berkeley hills

BCSTech - 2-25-2008 at 06:03 AM

Placerville. Grew up there and still live there when we're not in Todos Santos.

BTW, everyone in No. Cal knows Mt. Shasta is really in Southern Oregon.

vgabndo - 2-25-2008 at 08:26 AM

HEY...and I was beginning to LIKE you Alan.

BCSTech - 2-25-2008 at 08:38 AM

Hey, vgabndo, how's the snow up there? Did you guys get hammered by this latest storm?

BTW, I used to live and work up behind the "Redwood Curtain" in Eureka and Fortuna for five years. Made many a trip North over the Trinities so know the area.

chino - 2-25-2008 at 09:14 AM

Downtown Weaverville
Picked the wrong year to miss the boat south!

Martyman - 2-25-2008 at 10:18 AM

Going to Italy instead of baja this spring!

Lauriboats - 2-25-2008 at 02:12 PM

baja-spirit - 2-25-2008 at 02:46 PM

Inyo county....39 Miles south of Mammoth Mountain...in the Owens Valley

vgabndo - 2-25-2008 at 04:02 PM

Alan...we got 69.5 inches in January. The most in Jan. in 40 years. The way it came though, it wasn't too bad. We had a big rain in the middle that kept the depth down, but it was a hell of a skating rink EVERYWHERE for a couple of weeks.

Relative to my geographic position...I thought the operative phrase was "Don't Cali-fornicate Oregon".

I guess I do though. It is nice to save 7.25 % sales tax on the high dollar items.

Festus - 2-26-2008 at 01:44 PM

Livermore, CA. Taking my kids to Baja for first time over Spring break. Used to go all the time when I was a kid growing up in Phoenix area.

roundtuit - 2-26-2008 at 02:50 PM

Lake Shasta 370 miles of shore line and as hot as BCS in the summer.
Lakehead Ca

vgabndo - 2-26-2008 at 03:13 PM

Hey Tuit...

I'll bet that wasn't measured where the shoreline is NOW. Last trip to Redding the boat docks had moved damned near down under the Lakehead I-5 bridge!! There is a lot of moisture in our snowpack up here...we'll fill it for you.

True North is north of Mt Shasta

Tammy - 2-27-2008 at 06:16 PM

I own a house in Yreka and Klamath Falls. I have lived and worked in many different states, but my heart has always been in Baja.

Anything South of Red Bluff is Southern or Central California. I was a transplant from Goleta/Santa Barbara, and used to live in Lake Arrowhead, Idyllwild, Big Sur, Frazier Park, Fresno, Santa Maria, to name a few Southern California locations....

Skipjack Joe - 2-27-2008 at 08:40 PM

Socal starts at San Jose and now extends to San Quintin.

Baja starts at El Rosario.

Interesting 'fact', try to find out how long the Nile or Amazon river is and see how many answers you get.

It appears the the size of the ruler makes a huge difference on the final number.

I say Lake Shasta is about 439 miles. :P

vgabndo - 2-27-2008 at 11:55 PM

Skipjack...I'm not sure about starting at San Jose, but I frequently find myself surviving a trip through the city of BAKERSDIEGO.

It can be "interesting" southbound, but after being sufficiently soothed by Baja, it really sucks on the northbound.

I'm still mighty proud to live in a place where many folks never lock their homes unless they're going on vacation, and
I know everyone on my street by name. Its different. The Sheriff's report of every arrest in this little city, and the three communities around it are published in the weekly paper. It takes 8 or 10 column inches. Oh, yeah and I've got a ski cabin for sale.

Sharksbaja - 2-28-2008 at 12:36 AM

It's simple to tell when yer in No. Cal. You have to pass folks by using the slow lane. What's up with that? Why won't they move over and let through traffic go????

vgabndo - 2-28-2008 at 12:57 AM

There's a speed limit Dude. I invite you to look at it in a different way. If I'm driving as fast as the law allows in the fast lane, I am constantly passing trucks and other slower moving vehicles. I am also obeying the law. To have it your way, I would have a hectic drive, speed up, slow down, constantly changing lanes to get out of your way, then back to pass slower traffic and only to help you speed. The price you pay for doing that is that you have to make all the damned lane changes. It also is great for my fuel economy, and better for my planet. With all due respect, my judgement. I still love ya man. :P

[Edited on 2-28-2008 by vgabndo]

Sharksbaja - 2-28-2008 at 02:03 AM

I have no idea what you mean. I drive safely at 65-75 and that's what the freeways are designed for. These folks(and mostly seniors) are going 55mph and no more and no less in the fast lane. I like to keep my truck at it's sweet spot and that means I may be a little faster than some and slower than others but that doesn't mean I zig-zag thru traffic. B
You can't expect me to follow them while all the others are merging right to pass the slow-poke. :smug:
But really, I see many slow drivers in the fast lane as soon as you turn No. towards Sacto on I-5

Don't worry Perry I end up going slower in Oregon because that's what they do here. I guess we up here in Oregon have much more in common than yer SoCal brethern. Hey, I like Arny..... and u tu.

We have a "summer getaway" place at Eagle Lake, N/W of Susanville

vgabndo - 2-28-2008 at 12:06 PM

Sharks...

I too have no patience for people who aren't going the speed limit in the fast lane.

The Governator has turned out to be not as bad as he might have been, but that's a slim compliment.

I love that part of California. The northeast section. In fact, it doesn't feel like California at all. The Great Basin Desert. A great place to be.

Actually Skip it is a different state up there,

Sharksbaja - 2-28-2008 at 04:02 PM

it's called California

See how much better that looks than:

California

I'm convinced, and I grew up in SoCal. Yes, beautiful country, all the Sierras too!

Tehama, the little town of big trees - halfway between Red Bluff and Chico, right on the Sacramento River. Pop. 438 (no, wait, 437 - someone died last week).

CaboRon - 3-5-2008 at 04:11 PM

For twenty-five years I lived in Sausalito and Mill Valley, then I made the mistake of living for fifteen years in Anaheim :barf:

Now I live in Todos Santos.

I sure miss Marin County.
