Truck bed tents, air mattresses

JamesBC - 2-27-2008 at 06:54 AM

Does anyone have any thoughts/opinions on the small style truck bed tents? The most common is 'sportz' -

Another is 'Camp Right'

Any thoughts on the concept of these tents, or on different brands would be greatly appreciated.

Also, any thoughts on the 'truck bedz air mattresses?

Thanks in advance!

...the first question I have is where do you put all your camping supplies? emptying your truck bed so you can put a tent up seems like a lot of work. I remember seeing one tent that opened up on top of a truck canopy - that seemed sensible.

Well, I don't tend to travel with too much, and I stay in remote areas so security isn't much of a concern. Usually I just put food in the front, and other equipment on the ground if I have to unload for some reason.
I like the ones that fold out above as well, but they cost about 4 times as much.

Hi James. Yes I have a Sportz. It came with a baseball cap.:bounce: It's very comfy and roomy and the last time I used it the air matress went flat. The downside is just what the Wave said. You must completely empty your bed and stash any valuable stuff in the cab before assembly which takes a while especially your vehicle is lifted:lol:.
It is something I thought would be great but it takes too much time to load and unload everything. I just pack waaaaay toooo much stuff. It is fun to back up to the waters edge and relax. It is well built btw.
Now that I think of it..................... I wish I were using it right now!!!

I am not a huge fan of tents in areas with significant wind. But I am a very light sleeper. The sound of a rustling rain fly or tent walls is distracting, no matter how much beer and tequila I have consumed. It would take Sominex or something to put me down.

Am I Heath Ledger waiting to happen? :O

If it were me, I'd look into the carpet kit type units that puts you on a platform inside of a hard shell with storage below. They are somewhat claustrophobic while sleeping and can make doing the wild thing a challenge. But you have a secure pad with storage. Get one of the 2 inch Thermarest pads (regular air mattresses are also too noisy for me). Maybe consider one of the taller camper shells.

Another option............an E-Z UP with the optional screen on four sides. You gotta have shade anyway (and tents dont qualify in hot weather). Then, a cot under the EZ Up.

Let's see, I got sex, drugs and alcohol together in one post. What's left????

Oh yeah, there are carpet kits with built-in speakers back there, too...........there's the rock and roll.
