This should be interesting. What plans do they have for improvement to the surface streets in TJ leading to the border. It'll still be gridlock there.

Article states it's still in the architectural and engineering design stage, step 2 is to get it approved,step 3 is to put it out for bid. Sounds like 3yrs. before anything happens, if ever.

We crossed back into the U.S. this past Monday at the E Mexicali gate (Gareta Oriente). Twenty-two minutes and U.S. Customs asked only for our passports.

Typical great signage for this. We saw 1 sign telling us to turn right for the new garita on our way home over Pres weekend, drove 42 blocks in circles trying to find it. Ended up at the old one, + 1.5 hr wait, which could have been worse, and late for appointment in SD.

Anyone got a Google map on the route from H5 and San Felipe to get to the new one. BajaWarrior told us it was faster but hesitated to try and give me directions. Now I know why.

The city of Tijuana has plans for extensive remodeling of the border approaches.

There will be ten feeder streets, each with pullouts to aid police teams with the collection of mordida.

Each team will be armed with the latest in super slingshots.

I can do better than that. You have a Garmin GPS in the c-ckpit, right? Here's a track you can load using MapSource.

From today's Union Trib Opinions... Isn't there a sign posted that says every custom agent will cordially greet and welcome you back into the country???

The not-so-pleasant checkpoint 'experience' Regarding "Big expansion ahead at border entry/Plans aim to ease wait and increase security" (Our Region, Feb. 27):
It was nice to read about the planned changes to improve the border checkpoint infrastructure, as the "experience" of entering the United States from Tijuana is far from pleasant. I hope even a small percentage of these future energies goes to improve what I believe is one of the biggest challenges faced when crossing the border: facing the wrath of the border checkpoint Customs agent. On a recent Sunday at about 6 p.m. in Aisle 18, the agent presented an angry, demeaning attitude and seemed to take great delight in making the "experience" as caustic as possible.

I am a property owner in Baja and required to make frequent trips south of the border. More often than not recently, I have encountered a negative experience at the border checkpoint as an air of hostility has been the general rule. I work for a local fire service agency and appreciate what must be the monumental task of safeguarding our borders while working with a public that is not always upfront and truthful. However, it is important that public agency personnel maintain their professionalism while performing their daily duties. I'd like to forward my appreciation to those agents who continue to perform their difficult jobs with quality customer service and hope your supervisors recognize you accordingly.

I neglected to mention that in light of the issues just finding a place to cross and the post by Wooosh above that once we got to the gates we encountered very friendly BAs.

We were towing GSB on a flatbed trailer behind my F250. As we came around the corner at the end of the line, the gate agent could see us in the line (we were in 2nd line from left) and I could see he was on the phone. With 3 cars in front of us still, another agent walked up to us and told me we would not make the turn out of the gate to the right.

I had been checking it out and from my vantage it looked tight, but doable. 4, count em, 4 agents came out, stopped traffic in all the other lanes so we could get over to the far right. All of them were smiling and greeting us as we maneuvered over. The agent in our original line gave us a nice wave and smile. The gate agent we ended up with was also very friendly.

I could have set off a sour attitude as we realized the line to the far right was marked "RVs, trucks with trailers". We must have missed that back in line at some point.

We were a little cranky to this point, so it sure helped our "tude" for the rest of the drive home.

Point well taken, Robert. I know their job is tough but, not so tough that they have to treat everybody like crap.
