Got a good cold remedy?

Pompano - 3-1-2008 at 11:57 AM

I got a dang cold..or flu bug?...about a week ago and am tired of missing fishing trips. (Was supposed to go this morning and had to pass.) My post count is getting way too high from all this sitting around the casa.

What's your remedy? Any good over-the-counter stuff that worked for you? Or...?? Thanks.

I can be headed for Mulege's pharmacy real quick and get about anything from my good buddy, Rueben, shown below outside his farmacia in the town square.

Johnny Walker Red Label usually works for me.

Pompano - 3-1-2008 at 12:01 PM

Ken...I have some black label given to me as a gift, maybe okay to use now?...please, please.

Cypress - 3-1-2008 at 12:06 PM

Pompano, It's been a tad too foggy these past couple of days for venturing out on the deep blue sea.:D Have you ever tried oregano oil? :D After one dose, if it doesn't help with the cold you won't admit it. Mighty potent stuff!:tumble:

Pompano - 3-1-2008 at 12:13 PM

okay Cypress..achoo, sniff...I'll try anything. How do you squeeze those little flakes?

Sure, Black Label should work fine. It's for special occasions and I would say this qualifies. Specially if it gets you back out on the boat. Take it straight up, you don't want any ice cubes when you have a cold.

Buena suerte,

Kell-Baja - 3-1-2008 at 12:22 PM

My Grandma swore that a "Hot Totty" (Not sure of the spelling) was always the answer to a cold.

Ken...sounds good to me.

Pompano - 3-1-2008 at 12:24 PM

We'll give it a little test while waiting for some other suggestions!

BMG - 3-1-2008 at 12:34 PM

Wrap umeboshi (pickled plum), garlic and orange peel in aluminum foil.

Burn them in a pan over medium heat for about 3 - 4 hours.

The ingredients will turn into a sort of black charcoal, mash that up into brown powder.

Take 3 teaspoons of this powder in a day.

>>>

Then again, you may want to try the Black Label.

Pompano - 3-1-2008 at 12:38 PM

BMG...You have been watching too many late night Tarzan and the Witchdoctor movies. Even if I could FIND a pickled plum...after burning that concoction on Felipa's new stove, I might as well go terminal.

P.S. Am now trying another Px of Black Label. Ain't half bad.

DENNIS - 3-1-2008 at 12:46 PM

Sudafed.......and Black Label. Guaranteed to give you much needed relief.
Sudafed is hard to find here. Maybe you'll have better luck down there. Ask your neighbors to search their medicine cabinets.

Pompano - 3-1-2008 at 12:50 PM

Sudafed sounds good. Will run next door ... an ex-nurse abides therein.

edited to say I went next door and got some Sudafed to put into the skotch.

Oso - 3-1-2008 at 01:24 PM

Lemon juice, honey and rum in a mug or jarrito, fill with hot (just boiled) water. Sip and repeat until you don't care about the cold.

Some call this a hot toddy.

elizabeth - 3-1-2008 at 02:15 PM

Theraflu with tequila! Kind of like a hot margarita.

gibson - 3-1-2008 at 02:22 PM

try all these and you'll be dead!
no cure for colds.
just gotta sit it out
speedy recovery

Skipjack Joe - 3-1-2008 at 02:35 PM

Agreed.

Just take some tylenol and go fishing anyway. When you feel tired just kick back and let the boat rock you. Go easy on yourself and do as much as you feel up to.

Pompano

longlegsinlapaz - 3-1-2008 at 02:43 PM

I see Elizabeth is muy intelligente....TheraFlu....MINUS the tequila will at minimum make you feel like you're going to live!! Though I doubt you'll find it at your local Mulege tienda! I have a stash here in La Paz that my builder has been tapping into....he's now a TheraFlu advocate! With the hangover from all those booze "remedies", on top of your cold, you'll wish you were dead!:no:

Wrong !!!
That's were Menudo is for, together with a wellbuilt Bloody Mary.:saint::biggrin:

longlegsinlapaz - 3-1-2008 at 03:06 PM

As with cold remedies, Menudo is a distinct personal decision.....:barf:

Mexican Herbal Tea

Gypsy Jan - 3-1-2008 at 03:16 PM

Specifically, Te Abango for the symptoms of La Gripa and Te Siete Azahares to boost up your immune system. Your local farmacia probably carries, ours does.

And, if you want to make a hot toddy by adding your Black Label to it, it will probably cure you faster, or at least, it will make the time go by faster! :tumble:

please ... try and assimilate into your adopted culture: cerveza y clamato (sp) con limon. AWEJO!!!:lol::lol:

bajaboolie - 3-2-2008 at 10:39 PM

Gotta go with the sudafed (or something like that) for the congestion, and COFFEE for the energy.

Alcohol is great for lots of occasions, but if you need to get stuff done you need stimulants, not depressants!

Alan - 3-2-2008 at 10:49 PM

Can't really help you since it sounds like you have a full-blown case of a cold but in the future take double doses of Zinc at the first sign of a cold or flu. (It comes in pill form now in most vitamin sections and its much easier on your teeth not having to bite off chunks of metal)

I thought it was just another old wive's tale (not my old wife) until I tried it. Been doing it for the last 5 years now and it's been 98% effective at eliminating or at least minimizing my colds.

amir - 3-3-2008 at 12:36 AM

All the remedies work. Use more aggressive treatments if you are at risk of complications.
Colds are self-limiting. They are also cleansing crises.
Rest. Drink plenty of fluids. Eat fresh and easily digested foods.
Use the downtime to catch up on siestas. You must have needed a rest...

Get Well Soon! :D

amir - 3-3-2008 at 12:38 AM

... and of course, get a chiropractic adjustment, that's the best thing to tune up your nerves and maximize all your functions...

oldlady - 3-3-2008 at 06:18 AM

1000 mg Vitamin C every hour. Zinc good too.

Every hour? That's a lot of Vit. C.. So much that I'm sure you'll be spending an inordinate amount of time in the bathroom, searching for your Lomatil.

Taco de Baja - 3-3-2008 at 09:21 AM

Go with the tried and true:

Or, save some money and go with the generic WallyWorld, CVS, Longs, Target brand

wilderone - 3-3-2008 at 10:04 AM

Here's my cold remedy. Get one fresh onion, slice and put in a saucepan with one can of beef broth. Simmer until the onion is tender and eat the whole thing. Have it with garlic bread with lots of fresh garlic. Drink with 16 oz. of orange juice. Also, get EmergenC which is a powder to mix with water, 1,000 mg Vit. C and 32 minerals. Liquids assimilate faster and more completely. Have one of these daily for 10 days. Get a box of Celestial Seasonings Red Zinger or Lemon Zinger tea, and have 3 cups per day. Take aspirin for aches and pains, cough suppressant if needed.
If you want to go the extra mile, get some Umcka Cold Care syrup. I've used it on several occasions and can say that it really works. You can also take quercetin and echinacea tablets during and after to boost your immune system. Trader Joes has a beverage that is Lemon, Honey, Ginger and Echinacea. Get a bottle of that and drink a couple glasses a day.

CaboRon - 3-3-2008 at 02:36 PM

Homemade chicken soup.

CaboRon

Iflyfish - 3-3-2008 at 06:33 PM

Chicken soup is very good, lots of science on that one.

Vitamin C till stools loose.

At first symptoms take Airborne and Zycam nasal spray. They seem to work for me if taken early.

Lots of bed rest and no sugar, cut down on wheat and dairy, all contribute to inflamation.

Toddy is good if you can't get Nyquil for sleep and symptom relief.

You do look terrible, hope it is over soon.

Iflyfish

wilderone - 3-3-2008 at 06:53 PM

The manufacturers of Zycam are being sued due to side effects - people have reported permanently losing their sense of smell. Airborne also being sued as fraudulent advertising - just vitamins - see recent news. And Nyquil suppresses your body's natural functions of cough, running nose, etc. TOO much, so that sinus infection may occur (you SHOULD have a runny nose to some extent), and other exacerbations. Chicken soup is good because of the celery/carrot/liquid content, which are the effective cold combating ingredients.

That's what I would prescribe for my patients living south of Rosarito Beach near the dairy.

Natalie Ann - 3-3-2008 at 07:13 PM

Pesto.... olive oil and basil and pine nuts and an entire braid of garlic - or however much garlic you can tolerate. Needs to be enough to break a good sweat. Skip the Parmesan cheese - milk products bad for respiratory unhappiness. Eat pesto and pasta for one full day, maybe two.... no more cold.
Tried and true.
At my house today we're testing it on flu.

Nena

DanO - 3-3-2008 at 07:22 PM

1. Sleep as much as possible.
2. Drink plenty of fluids.
3. Take a combination of Tylenol and Ibuprofen for fever reduction and body aches.
4. Take guaifenesin (an expectorant) to thin and drain mucous. It is important to drink plenty of water when taking this medication -- it aids in the thinning.
5. If coughing is keeping you awake, use a cough syrup with a suppressant such as dextromethorphan.

Iflyfish - 3-3-2008 at 07:25 PM

wilderone

My advice is not to listen to my advice on the human cold.

Thanks for the update on my outdated cures. They seem to work for me, but then lately mrsfish has been telling me things like "have you smelled yourself lately?" and "when did you last take a bath".....zycam does that eh? And that nice teacher who invented Airborne....a quack......how sad.

Thanks, think I will go make myself a nice hot toddy.

Iflyfish

SDRonni - 3-3-2008 at 08:30 PM

If cough is keeping you awake, a little apricot brandy in some "Sleepytime" tea will give you a good night's rest!

DENNIS - 3-3-2008 at 08:37 PM

What is Sleepytime Tea? Is there a worm in the bottle?

SDRonni - 3-3-2008 at 08:42 PM

No worm.......it's a tea by Celestial Seasonings, no caffeine, may have some chamomile for sleep. Really good stuff!

Recommended by MD many years ago...had many recurring colds, much tonsilitis, guy threatened to yank the tonsils and suggested trying this as last resort. 2 colds in 35 years. Never had the side effects you speak of, but also believe
individuals react differently and would not discount your comment.

On the mend.....many thanks for the tasty remedies...

Pompano - 3-4-2008 at 10:47 AM

...and some not so tasty..ugh.

Let's see.....I now have a large medicine cabinet well-stocked with these items:

- Red&Black Label scotch, tequila, apricot brandy, stumpjack...and creme de menthe? hmm..
- pickled plumes (that's what it says on the can)
- sudafed (thanks neighbor)
- Theraflu
- Abango tea
- zinc (I took one off my boat engine)
- chiropractic appt.
- vitamin C tabs and some navels
- Robitussin CF
- March issue Playboy
- Cold Care syrup (good on flapjacks, too)
- 17 flavors of Sleepytime Tea
- one willow bark poultice
- a case of beef/chicken broth mixed
- eye of newt, robins egg
- Zycam and small lawyer
- Olive oil, pine nuts, basil, squirrel
- Ibprofen & Tylenol
- NyQuil, large mallet
- Mirrolure
-
- VaporRub & pr sock
- mas scotchees
- sleep in cypress tree

Muchas Gracias one and all! I have noted all those wonderful cures for the next cold.

Nurse's orders: Go fishing.

[Edited on 3-5-2008 by Pompano]

DanO - 3-4-2008 at 12:54 PM

I'd be very careful handling that squirrel and the Playboy at the same time. They (squirrels) have been known to carry rabies.

bremptg - 3-4-2008 at 01:21 PM

Try rubbing Vick's Vaporub on the bottoms of your feet before you go to bed. Put socks on so you don't get the bed greasy and enjoy a cough free night. Sounds crazy, but it works.

wilderone - 3-4-2008 at 04:08 PM

Pompano - thanks for the laugh. greatly appreciated right now.
Oh, and one more thing. If you put some cypress tree berries under your pillow, you'll sleep better.

DENNIS - 3-4-2008 at 04:18 PM

And don't forget to throw some salt over your shoulder before you go fishing.
