Packoderm your avatr has always been a fav of mine and reminds me of past travels.

I remember seeing many over the years and are/were objects d' art along desolate roads decades ago but many are still there. Much like the Alcan Hwy years ago there were roadside epitaphs marked with a relic(s) that you'd be hard pressed to find elsewhere.
They reflect the rugged, hostile environment that left these monuments to be seen by future generations. They paint the misfortunes of the adventurous souls that had to abandon their precious vehicle and proceed another way. They went thru hell too arrive at their permanent resting place. What happened to them? One can only imagine.
The photos I posted are of cars well off the traveled byways. I like to examine them for clues and it's very cool see one with chrome knobs & accessories like radios still attached.
It's a veritable time capsule.

Looks like my sister's spare tire. She was only going 25 mph or so....just flat for a long time. At least we can laugh about it now. This was the third flat in ~10 miles; the other tire had a 1/2 hole in it....note the derelict jack too...

PabloS' colorful derelict reminded me of something, so I looked back in my files to a group of vintage photos circa 1950, taken in Estero Beach.

Found this old beauty at a deserted Rancho in the shadow of Picacho del Diablo.

Late 40's early 50's Dodge Power Wagon?

Here is part of an old jeep that was used by Heraclio Espinoza to get back and forth to Rancho El Metate from El Rosario. Notice Heraclio Espinoza's brand the "H" with half moon underneath. The jeep is now located at the entrance to Rancho Cerro Prieto.



This car is just west of the old mission ruins at Rancho Las Palmas. It belonged to a man who was on his way back to Rancho El Metate from El Rosario many, many years ago. He and his passenger were driving late at night when they developed car trouble. They got out and made a torch to look under the car to see what the trouble was. Little did they know the gas tank was ruptured and when they put the torch under the car KABOOM.


On November 16, 1961 in this very vehicle, Heraclio Espinoza Husband of Mama Espinoza rescued Aileen Saunders, pilot and first President of the Flying Samaritans and five others when she was forced to land her twin engine Beechcraft on the Mesa above El Rosario as she was running out of fuel ahead of a dangerous sand storm. This began a friendship between Mama Espinoza and Aileen Saunders which lasted until Ms. Saunders’ death. This also started the Flying Samaritan’s Clinic in El Rosario where they still treat patients to this day.

This one was a long way from Estero Beach!!

Not a car... but still a 'derelict' (Laguna Percebu, 1970s)

High and dry... near today's Bahia Santa Maria... but this was in 1967 before the bay had a name or anything was built there...

I still think it would be hysterical to pull along the beach during Easter Week when they're packed with locals and everyone is all buzzed up with that whale looking boat
