Mexico controls the border

DENNIS - 3-3-2008 at 06:12 PM

Aside from the fact that Mexico is shoveling her unemployed across the border between ports of entry, she is now trying to control the flow of traffic through the legal gates.
The current thread, Mexico Expo, reports of statements from a government spokesman that some lanes of traffic, one or more, leading to the gate will be reserved for patrons of the medical practices in Tijuana.
The authorities admit that they can't govern the rate of traffic flow at the gate but, they can design the type of occupant in any lane on the Mexico side and they propose to do this for customers of the medical profession in Tijuana.

That may sound altruistic when first heard but, it isn't. The doctors and dentists in TJ arn't performing a public service. They're working on their own profit desires.

My point is this....The US is about to build a large expansion of the border gate in San Ysidro. Expensive as well to you and I. Why would the US government spend our dollars to refine a port of entry if the Mexican government is going to define who has preferential crossing privileges? This decision to allocate a lane to medical clients will set a BS precedent. Who or what is next in line to have a private lane? Perhaps the gambelers at off-track betting or the hoarhouse afficianados. They both could be a strong lobby for their customers.

My opinion is that this private lane to US territory in the line sucks and Mexico continues to laugh at the structure which is OUR border, Mexico and USA.

Anybody have any comments?

Iflyfish - 3-3-2008 at 06:22 PM

So then for the bordello fellows the red would mean go?

So are you opposed to US Citizens going to Mexico to get their medical care when they have the very best system in the world in their own country? I have read that the US has the best medical care system and doubt that any good American would actually go to another country to receive care when they already have the best system in the world. I saw Ted and Alice discuss this, I think?

How about a lane for drug smugglers, that would save a lot of time and expense.

Rick....
Did I say one ******* word about the quality of medical care?

No you did not say anything about the quality of medical care. I assume that market forces are driving Medical Tourism and to the extent that it is a pre-occupation of the Tourism Minister.

You wrote: "My opinion is that this private lane to US territory in the line sucks and Mexico continues to laugh at the structure which is OUR border, Mexico and USA. Anybody have any comments?"

Medical Tourism a huge symptom of a major problem in the US and is a boon to both Mexico and Canada. I doubt that the US would ever go along with a plan to identify a lane for the use of Medical Tourists. That would recognise a major flaw in a US internal policy.

Many believe that it is a myth that US people are flocking to foreign countries to obtain medical care, and here is a Mexican Goverment representative talking about devoting an entire entry lane to those seeking care outside the US.

It sounds like the Director of Tourism has this profitable business sector in mind as he talks of a new line. I sincerly doubt that this would ever happen with out great loss of face for the US.

It sounds like you are opposed to the new gate and building at the border as well as potential to identify various lines for prefrential treatment and are concerned about even more impediments to crossing the border. Do you think that the US is going over board and is wrong headed in it's putting these sort of resources into a project like this? Is this all a waste of time on a bogus issue?

Don't you think it should read:

"I have read that the US has the best medical care "

Frankly Fly, I think the system sucks in many respects. As far as care goes, that is something different all together.

sorry Dennis

I think the idea won't fly. If it does I'll just print out some phony script or a note from the doc.
Does anyone actually think that the Mexican Customs will be able to differenciate anyway.
Maybe you can get a sticker stating your intent in Mexico. Like " Destination: Baja clinic" That way you could just breeze thru.
I suppose you could pull up to the guys there and fake ill. Maybe hack while you explain your need for fast returns.

Totally rediculous imho.

That, what you say and what you hear are felony ridiculous.

losfrailes - 3-3-2008 at 07:07 PM

I doubt that the outgoing lane is being considerer for medical patients. More likely to assist the many medical people from the US that go to TJ and elsewhere, to give very valuable aid to the people.

However, what do I know?

Iflyfish - 3-3-2008 at 07:19 PM

losfrailes:

That aid has gone both ways i.e. WTC and Katrina response from Mexico.

I too doubt that a lane will be assigned to this purpose.

However, having said that, there is a serious argument to be made that our attmepts at "tightening the borders" are a waste of time, energy and resources. On that issue I am ambivilant.

Expand your knowledge base. Read Doug's post on the Mexico Expo thread. If I were to expand my base, I could give you a link to it or, better yet, bring it to you but, What do I know.

BajaNomad posted under another topic:

"He also spoke about the restaurant promo to entice people to get their Passport cards....

.... and that they have already successfully been using a way to get people coming for health services back across the border more quickly (no more than a 20 minute wait) - and would be looking at ways to do more of these types of things. He said they didn't have control of how fast the U.S. let people back across, but that they had control of the access back to the gates (or something along those lines). "

BajaNomad - 3-3-2008 at 07:34 PM

#1 - He said they're already doing it.
#2 - He said it's been a successful program - and I assume something they will expand upon.
#3 - He did not provide much else in details.

Iflyfish - 3-3-2008 at 07:54 PM

BajaNomad:

Thanks for the clarification. that is very interesting indeed.

I love Baja Nomads, where else would you find out this sort of "real time" information about Baja. My regards to you and to the moderators of this group for the service you provide.

Using that logic, the sentry line sucks too. You have to pay uncle sam to get preferential crossing rights.
US promotes business by letting business crossers to front of the line using sentry program. Mexico promotes medical business by letting patients to front of the line.
Until we spend tax dollars to immprove croossing for all, you should expect to pay for privilige.
As governmment gets slashed, the rich will have preferential access to government services.
I'm a tax and spend democrat, wish we would spend on improving the border, would rather pay taxes to improve border than pay sentry programm for access

Yeah. That's the price of admission for qualified people to enter the country with relative ease. You shouldn't have that privilege just because you got a cheap root canal.

I hate this, but I have read this thread twice, and can't help but agree with your basic premis....

Reverse the flow and see how the Mexican Government would scream should our government deside to channel southbound travelers according to whatever, silly dictate, they would wish to apply.

bajabound2005 - 3-3-2008 at 10:28 PM

if there ever was a thread screaming for spell check....

What I need to know is how it works. How do you identify yourself as a medical "tourist"? Do you drive past a kiosk or something and show em your cast, or a before and after photo of your new crown?

How bout if you went south to get a prostate exam...what then???

If you get upset that Mexico will give preference to medical patients, you can always get a Sentry pass that will enable you to speed up to the border and run over the grandmas-on-chemo and root-canal patients standing in the medical line.

The US promotes business by allowing people pay to cross the border quickly. Mexico promotes business by managing the lines on their sovereign lands.

What steams me :fire: is that as a US citizen I have to pay my government to get fast crossing clearance at the border :fire::fire:

I say hold back some money that Haliburton is stealing from us in Iraq and hire a few more border inspectors here in San Diego :lol:

SDRonni - 3-4-2008 at 04:59 PM

Just back from Rosarito. Border wait at San Ysidro with Sentri-----30 seconds......I am absolutely not lying. The Sentri pass is the greatest thing since sliced bread, IMHO......

I don't believe that anything the customs and immigration departments do at the border is motivated by business.
