A Very Nice Nursery Pictures added now

DianaT - 3-4-2008 at 05:25 PM

If you need some plants for the norther part of Baja Sur, we have a nursery to suggest.

From Highway one, take the Tortugas (Bahia Asuncion) turn off and 1.9 miles from the Y and just past the small store with a big Tecate sign, turn right (only way to turn) and go about 1 block. It is just a little past the electric plant.
[Edited on 3-5-2008 by jdtrotter]See correction below---it is 1.9 miles from the electric plant to the turn off. Wind fried my mind, and boy has it been windy.

Salvador and his family are really nice people and his prices are very fair. Be sure to have some to put the plants on as some of his cans are rusting away.

Just a suggestion---we may have never found it on our own. We thank Juan for telling us about it.

Diane

Just remembered, the sign pointing to Bahia Tortugas blew down the other day---should have taken a picture, but it is the only main road in Vizcaino that heads west.

Vicaino has a huge nursery. I can't provide directions, though I could drive there. It's on a (used to be?) dirt road that goes north from about three miles down the road to Tortuga.

They do research on propagation of native species and hybrids. I believe they have some plantings from the "famous" mango tree at San Borja.

I know about it because a friend of mine (Mexican) had some automotive adventures on the way to San Francisquito a few years back and wound up camping in the nursery for a few days, while his family got rides back home.

What kind of plants did you find Diane? Any trees? Great tip and perfect location after agi checkpoint.

I'd heard of a nursery in Vizcaino and we wandered the back streets without luck about 10 years ago. We'll give it another try.

the vivero is actually in the ejido Diaz Ordaz, I think it's the second of three entrances...turn right off the highway and it's just on the left side after you turn into the ejido....after leaving Vizcaino going towards Bahia Tortugas, Asuncion.

MISTAKE ON DIRECTIONS OPPS

The turn off to the nursery, which yes is in the ejido for which there is no sign, is 1.9 miles from the power plant entrance on the road to Tortugas---can't miss that one. We forgot to see how far the entrance to the power plant was from the split, but I guess it is only 1 or 2 miles.

Roberto,

I wonder where that might be. That area now seems to all be in the hands of Los Pinos with their large greenhouses etc. Would be interested in knowing more.

We bought geraniums (sp), roses, ice plant, an avocado tree, lime tree, cactus, and other succulents for which we have no name. Salvador promised to get us a fig tree. There were other citrus trees, and I am not sure what else.

Bumped this up to add a couple of pictures. We were there the other day to buy some palm trees.

The turn is 3.7/9 miles from the turn-off to Tortugas/Bahia Asuncion. A couple of others have said they have now gone to that vivero and agree that it is nice.

We prefer to shop there when Salvador is there---his daughter is apt to charge more.

Our new palms.

If headed south and you stop, if you don't see something you want, ask. It is like the new cactus we bought, it was tucked away in the back.

Happy planting
Diane

Roberto - any chance you could fine better directions to that nursery - I went to the "flower nursery" but they didn't have any trees to speak of that would survive in arid conditions - I would like to get palms and natives if that is possible - thanks - Marv

I enjoyed seeing the pix of the vivero, Diane.
Reminds me that all containers make excellent plant pots.;D

Marv - Roberto's not participating here anymore.
Perhaps someone else might provide directions to that particular nursery?

I really think the one Roberto was talking about is the one we go to.

Not so long ago, it belonged to the parents of the current owners and maybe they were doing some different things then. The current owner and his family were living in the US until the father died and left them the vivero.

He does have palms and did you ask about other trees? Not everything is out where it can be seen. It is like the cactus we have bought are way in the back---sort of hidden away.

Salvador will also obtain plants for you---for instance, he did not have a fig tree but got one for us.

From Robertos description of it being about three miles out the Tortuga road, that is where this one is---and the road was all dirt not so many years ago.

Good Luck
Diane
