NEW SMOKING BAN

DENNIS - 3-5-2008 at 07:31 AM

You can only smoke cigarettes made in 1998.

backninedan - 3-5-2008 at 07:44 AM

First you have to import them.

The Gull - 3-5-2008 at 07:45 AM

You can only buy them on the TJ - Ens Toll Road when you are stopped at night by drug lords.

standingwave - 3-5-2008 at 07:48 AM

A 'net search turned up some info.

In brief, the bill will be in effect when enacted by the president which could happen as early as next month, and, although it prohibits smoking in workplaces, public buildings and public transportation, is not a complete ban.

Mexico's Senate approved a bill Tuesday that would ban smoking in workplaces, public buildings and public transportation across the country, and allow it in private businesses only if special, ventilated smoking areas are set up.

The bill, approved 101-5 with two abstentions, had already passed the lower house of Congress, and only awaits enactment by the president.

Mexico City's legislative assembly on Tuesday passed a smoking ban for public places as draconian as any in the world. Once the ban is implemented, as early as next month, smoking will be banned completely from any public space — including offices, malls, restaurants and bars.

There is also a rumour to the effect that smoking ten year old cigarettes will be allowed so make sure to save your receipts showing date of purchase.

I am all for people doing what they want ,but smokeing in a resaurant or an enclosed area!!! NO THANKS :no::no:

Iflyfish - 3-5-2008 at 10:39 AM

Coulda knocked me over with a feather! I should live so long as to see this in Mexico!

I recall when they implimented the ban in Oregon. I went to a restaurant in Eastern Oregon and ask where the non smoking section was....everyone in the place turned with hostile glares and the waiter escorted us to a table right in the middle of the place.....I guess I was the first to be treated to their disdain for this new law. Nearly everyone in the place lit up as we exited. Now, thank goodness, smoking is rarely seen in public places and the air is so much better.

We were at Rice and Beans in San Ignacio 2 weeks ago and I noticed an absence of ash trays. The owner (can't remember his name) said that smoking was banned in public places in Mexico and directed me to the outside smoking area.....I don't smoke of course, but I had noticed as soon as I walked in the bar that it was smoke free. Maybe he was getting a jump on enforcement of the new rule.

capt. mike - 3-5-2008 at 02:39 PM

tobacco is my favorite vegetable.

vgabndo - 3-5-2008 at 02:46 PM

Common decency (hopefully) precedes the need for law.
I've never understood how a smoker can smoke and eat at the same time. They have usually answered that they don't, they are smoking while I'M eating. They seem unaware of how FUNKY and poisonous their breath is when they exhale.

It will be a bold step out of the third world.

It’s hard to believe that common sense and courtesy has to be legislated on this issue, but it seems so. But it has allowed us to enjoy restaurants again in California…and what …now in Mexico as well! I suspect both the gringos and locals will treat this like stop signs down here - no enforcement = no law.

For me the "worst" is losing my beloved sister three years ago to lung cancer. She didn't smoke the last 15 years of her life, but I guess she didn't quit soon enough. 61 years old was just too young to die.

bajabound2005 - 3-6-2008 at 09:52 PM

Bob, to answer your question, here's the story:

Mexican Senate approves anti-smoking law
Tue Feb 26, 10:57 PM ET

Mexico's Senate approved a law Tuesday that would ban smoking in workplaces, public buildings and public transportation across the country, allowing it in private businesses only if special, ventilated smoking areas are set up.

Mexico City's legislature went even further, modifying a previous anti-smoking measure to eliminate even such special smoking areas in the city's bars and restaurants.

The federal law was approved by a 101-5 vote, with two abstentions. It has already passed the lower house of Congress, and only awaits enactment by the president. Mexico City's law will take effect one month after it is published by the city's mayor.

Current federal laws allow people to smoke only in select areas of certain businesses, but don't require them to be separated by a physical barrier and ventilation. Businesses would now have 180 days following the law's enactment to create enclosed smoking areas.

The new law would also ban a common practice in Mexico in which street vendors sell individual cigarettes, instead allowing only full packs to be sold. Businesses could face fines of up to US$40,000 or closure if they fail to comply with the federal measures.

The new law sets a minimum standard of protection for nonsmokers nationwide, leaving state and local legislatures free to pass even tougher limits, as Mexico City did on Tuesday.

The city had enacted a law in January allowing smoking areas in just 30 percent of bars and restaurants. Tuesday's measure bans smoking entirely.

BornFisher - 3-6-2008 at 10:50 PM

I`ve never smoked but just can`t grasp the anti smoking crowd where they feel legislation is necessary. Why not have the freedom to open a "smoke free" restaurant next to one where if you choose, you can smoke? Let the market decide, with no laws.
BTW I love my clothes not smelling like smoke after a few beers in a Cal bar, but still say it should be up to the guy that owns the place and his customers.

oldlady - 3-7-2008 at 04:37 AM

I dunno, Bornfisher, that has an innuendo of asking people to take responsibility for their choices. The ability to adjourn to a piano bar and enjoy a cognac and good cigar has become one of the lost pleasures of life.

Russ - 3-7-2008 at 05:53 AM

I am, unfotunately, still a smoker. I don't have a problem going outside to smoke. Here is a smoking room that has a fitting (?) ceiling painting.

smoking ban

bombero - 3-7-2008 at 07:29 AM

My two best friends are going to love this new law. Angel and Luka are not fond of smoke, especially in resturants. there is nothing worse than trying to chew their bones or tacos under the table in a smoke filled room!

Terry28 - 3-7-2008 at 10:13 AM

"Ricaero Cabeza??" I love It !!!

Actually, I think you can import or smoke any cigarette that is between 10 and 15 years old.

DENNIS - 3-7-2008 at 05:10 PM

I stand corrected.

An Expensive Habit

MrBillM - 3-7-2008 at 05:27 PM

And I haven't smoked a cigarette in 40 years.

I always keep Marlboros around to hand out to the Campo workers (one of their favorite things) and last week I had to replenish my supply in San Felipe. 340.00 pesos for a carton. They aren't that much more at Walmart in the U.S. At this rate, I'll be bringing cigarettes INTO Baja.

That much for Mexican smokes? Things have changed a lot.

In your trips back and forth, Bill, don't you go anywhere near a duty free store?

Russ - 3-7-2008 at 06:39 PM

They're around $220 in the Mulége area

Ricardo Romo is a wonderful host and a good friend to the LocosMocos crew. He makes the best Margarita in Baja, IMHO, with Mexican limes from his own orchard. Clean rooms, no frills, great matresses, food is hit and miss.

National smoke ban set to be enforced starting Thursday

A nationwide smoking ban requiring restaurants, bars and other public places to confine smokers to closed-in sections is set to into effect this Thursday, Congressman Ramírez Barba told Notimex in an interview on Saturday.

The ban prohibits lighting up at schools and offices and carries stiff fines of up to approximately 500,000 pesos. Commercial establishments that flout the law can be closed down after repeat offenses, and smokers can be jailed for up to 36 hours.

Signed into law May 30, the government was given 90 days to enforce the ban - a period which ends Aug. 28, Ramírez Barba said. The measure follows smoking ban that was slapped on Mexico City's bars and eateries in January, but is still less prohibitive than the capital's comprehensive ban. -NOTIMEX

Well, the grace period is up on Thursday. Has anyone seen any changes in their local restaurants and bars?

rpleger - 8-24-2008 at 03:00 PM

Not here in Mulegé, we know about it but the bar owners don't want to offend there best customers...

ensenada non smoking restaurants

sylens - 8-24-2008 at 04:09 PM

include

la finca
mariscos bahía
el charro
mi kaza

casamar tried to go non smoking a few years ago but gave up because the tourists insisted on smoking:fire: so they have a smoking section upstairs and non smoking downstairs.

there are probably a few more that have gone non-smoking as well...:bounce:

Bob and Susan - 8-24-2008 at 05:10 PM

Now, Bob and Susan, if you allowed DOGS we'd definitely come stay with you! We LOVE non-smoking places! We'll even pay and additional cleaning fee (they DO shed!)

it's best for us not to broadcast it to the world:lol::lol:

Baja-Brit - 8-29-2008 at 04:59 AM

They introduced a smoking ban in enclosed spaces here in England last July.

Pubs and clubs are dropping like flies because people are staying away. It's sad.

Why on earth you can't have smoking bars and non smoking bars I will never know.

As a worker you can choose which one to work in and as a customer you can choose which one to drink in. It's not rocket science is it!?

I guess it's all about controlling the populus and been seen to be doing "the right thing".

The problem is it won't stop there, whats going to be banned next?

As you were.

Bob and Susan - 8-29-2008 at 05:42 AM

it's called "forced participation" in saving lives

both yours and mine:light::light:

smoking causes cancer!!!

CaboRon - 8-29-2008 at 05:56 AM

When I moved down here,

I was appaled at the number of gringos that were unabashed chain smokers ....

And I thought,

:light: This is where they all went after the restrictions were implemented in California ....

They came to La Baja

And sooooo defensive about their loss of personel rights ,

But no concern about their spewing of noxious and deadly chemicals into the air around them ... :fire:

Even Las Vegas has finally shut down smoking in restaurants :bounce:

Thank you Mexico for taking a step forward

CaboRon

Note: I , of course, understand that the Nomad smokers are very polite and considerate smokers .... and a smoking room should be provided for them ... with beautiful frescos on the ceiling ....

And a special thanks to Russ for providing the illuntration.

CaboRon
