Really sorry to learn of that, Paulina. Cora was obviously a true member of the family. Hope Cody is handling it well.

We had to put down "Honey" a few months ago. My wife had her for 14 years.

Pets just dont live long enough...

Sorry for your loss...

Paulina,
My sincerest and deepest sympathies.

When My 21 year old cat died last year, I cried for months.:(

Mango - 3-6-2008 at 10:11 PM

It looks like she could have been a cat.. because it seems that she lived at least nine good lives.

Cherish the memories, carry the love in your heart, and thanks for sharing the gift of that Cora taught you.

Lo siento tambien.

Paula - 3-6-2008 at 10:13 PM

A sad time for you, Paulina. You have such great pictures to remember her by-- she must have been a lot of fun.

bajadogs - 3-6-2008 at 10:55 PM

I'm so sorry for your loss Paulina,
Cora looks like a fun dog to hang with. Best friend perhaps?

The Rainbow Bridge Story

Just this side of Heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge. When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge.

There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food and water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable. All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and time gone by.

The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing: they miss someone very special to them; who had to be left behind.

They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. The bright eyes are intent; the eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to break from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster. YOU have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.

THEN YOU CROSS RAINBOW BRIDGE TOGETHER....

A sad day for nice people. Iam sure he is thinking "thank you for owning me" Paulina, sorry.

BajaGeoff - 3-7-2008 at 12:42 AM

So sorry Paulina.....I know my dogs Sula and Fletch would have loved to have met her. Someday they will meet up in pooch heaven and have a good romp together!

Sorry for your loss of Cora, Paulina.

Pompano - 3-7-2008 at 05:31 AM

It's always numbing to lose a pet that loves and trusts you with such pristine simplicity. Pet owners know this feeling...that special relationship between human and animal. When Cora smiled at you, you knew it was genuine. Letting go is never easy, but posting here with friends will help. Cherish the memories and look to the future.

vgabndo - 3-7-2008 at 06:37 AM

I'm Sorry.

I just said a special adios to my 16 year old kitty 'cause I'm going to be gone for three weeks and you just never know.

DENNIS - 3-7-2008 at 08:08 AM

So sad, Paulina. What happened? She didn't seem that old.

Debra - 3-7-2008 at 08:12 AM

Oh Paulina, I'm sooooo sorry! How is Dern doing? He had her along time.........I know how much it hurts (I just lost Keicko a few months ago)

What happened?

Tell Dern and Cody, Brendan and I are thinking of them and you.

BigWooo - 3-7-2008 at 08:32 AM

So sorry Paulina. After a similar loss I know there's nothing that can cure that empty feeling but time and remembering what great life she had.

I just went through a week from hell waiting for biopsy results on my dog. They are family, they bring us so much joy, and in the end they leave us much too soon. Luckily, my guy is OK. My heart goes out to you for your loss, but Cora's spirit, mixed with the baja spirit, will bring smiles to your faces forever. Via con dios Cora.:(

Paulina, I'm so sorry to hear of the loss of your good friend and companion Cora. May her spirit run free, chasing lizards with no fear of the dread cholla needles.

Paulina I am truly sorry to hear of your loss. I know how painful it is to loose a cherished pet.

David K - 3-7-2008 at 10:45 AM

Paulina, sorry for the loss to you, Dern and Cody... I think we last saw Cora the day after the 2006 Baja 1000 when we came by for a visit... a great Baja loving dog, for sure!

Gadget - 3-7-2008 at 10:49 AM

All of us are so sorry Paulina. Stand on the good time memories during this time.
Duke is sad he didn't get a chance to hook up with one of his "Baja chicks". He's a sucker for blonds like most of us guys.

Barbareno - 3-7-2008 at 11:04 AM

Paulina....we had to put Arlo down the day before you put Cora down. Bet those two are swapping fishing stories. I have tried to post this picture that was taken this year in San Roque, his last days of fishing. But its just not working. It is truly a very sad time.

Barb

Diver - 3-7-2008 at 11:08 AM

Sorry about Cora.
And really bad news about Arlo - at least he had a last trip to the beach.
.

DianaT - 3-7-2008 at 12:13 PM

Paulina,

Gees, we hate these threads---the hurt we know you are feeling brings tears to both of us.

They never live long enough and are framily. Cora was a lucky girl to have the family she had. We hope she has as much fun at the Rainbow Bridge as she did in Baja.

Barb,
Arlo just did not look that old---so glad he got to enjoy your trip down here.

Just plain old sad for everyone.

djh - 3-7-2008 at 12:28 PM

I'm sad and sorry you've had to say goodbye to your faithful friend.

This is different than any other type of loss or grief that we experience in our lives, though it resonates with all of our losses.

I hope the outpouring of care, sympathy, & support, and this sharing of personal stories from friends and fellow Nomads helps to ease the pain and helps to fill that empty space in the boat, in the house, and in your hearts.

Paulina,
I've never met you or Cora before - but I feel the pain. Many of us have been through this. Nothing but time will get you past the sad feeling of loosing a companion like Cora. Our dog Shelby will be 15 years old on June 1st - so we know there's probably not too much time left - but she's doing well. We lost our dog Abby in 1992 and my wife, Audrey, wrote this poem.

ABBY

I've just lost a friend today,

Abby is her name.

The sparkle in her eyes
and the gleam in her face
was the reward I received
upon my returning feet.

I've just lost a friend today,

Abby is her name.

The true meaning of man's
best friend.

A warm bundle of fur upon
my skin, or those puppy-dog
eyes and that outstreatched paw,

Just to receive more loving was
all she ever wanted in return.

I've just lost a friend today,
Abby was her name.

Paulina,
So sorry to hear about Cora. We all end up so attached to our pets, they become a big part of our family. Our Ginger is 16 years old and I don't even want to think about how hard it is going to be when she leaves us. Looks like Cora had a great life enjoying Baja. Lauri

Gypsy Jan - 3-7-2008 at 10:19 PM

on the passing of your good girl.

Keri posted the rainbow bridge poem when we lost our very young Great Dane a few years ago. The sentiments comforted our family.

Since I saw your posting early this morning, this is the first time I could bring myself to open the topic.

Godspeed Cora.

Bajagypsy - 3-8-2008 at 07:15 AM

The Gypsy send their thoughts to you during your time of sorrow, for you and your family.

Paulina - 3-8-2008 at 09:49 AM

Thank you everyone for your kind words and thoughts. For those of you who knew Cora and asked what happened, we still aren't 100% sure. After our last trip to Baja at Christmas we noticed that she was loosing weight rapidly so we took her into the vet. We had spent the summer in Baja with her and in Aug. we were on the Pacific side where she had a huge tick problem (she had a bad reaction to various flea/tick meds. so none could be used) We reported the tick problem to the vet as an F.Y.I. He took blood tests and came back with a possitive reading for Rocky Mountain Fever. She was given meds, but they made her sick. We never saw the results or the vet as he was always too busy.

We went to a different vet who did more tests and reported back that her titers were not high for Rocky Mountain Fever after all. (I think the first vet was using that as an easy out)We tried various different meds to help her bounce back and nothing worked. She was loosing up to 2 lbs a week as we waited for different test results to come in, and with her small size she didn't have that much more to go.

It finally got down to a "value of life" wait. Her mind and tail were the last things that were working. The vet thinks that her G.I. tract was infected with cancer, as Boxers are prone to that awful disease.

We are going to be dogless for a while.
This is Cora, napping with her new squirrel she got for Christmas.

docsmom - 3-8-2008 at 12:30 PM

So sorry Paulina that you lost your beautiful girl.
Our animal babies own our hearts and it's unfair that they leave us so quickly.
Cora obviously had a wonderful life, full of advendure.
Thank you for sharing Cora's adventures with us. I write this with tears in my eyes.
Via con dios Cora.

Wiles - 3-8-2008 at 01:25 PM

Paulina & family,

I'm saddened over your loss. It's nice to see so many friends come forward to share your sorrow. Cora will be missed for a long time to come. I know there are many times I miss by baja buddy Reineer (or as you might remember him as Beach Patrol) and he has been gone for many years now. I still smile when I think of him and that is often. He will be with me always as Cora will be with you and your family. They never really leave us.

Ah, Paulina, We feel for you. We always have several Huskies in the house and they just don't live as long as we do.

Get another dog! It will quickly find a place in your heart and make you smile again.

Paulina. So sorry for your loss. If there was ever any doubt about the "unconditional love of a dog", here is an experiment. Take your dog, and place it in the trunk of your car along with your spouse. Wait an hour. Then open the trunk, and watch who is the most pleased to see you.!!!!!

shari - 3-9-2008 at 08:42 PM

Lo siento muchissimo amiga...the lovely thing is to picture Cora, Arlow, our dear Vanilla and other NOmad pets who went over the rainbow bridge all groovin together in mascota heaven on a sunny beach. Other puppies need your love now amigos.

David A. - 3-10-2008 at 04:26 AM

Sorry to hear the bad news. We lost our Rott Kayla shortly after we saw you Christmas. This weekend our Weiner dog Oscar lost the mobility of his rear legs. I am waiting for Yvonne to make the call. We love our dogs so much.

Paulina - 3-10-2008 at 10:07 AM

I'm sorry David, that is a tough call to make.

Cheers to our dogs!

David A , Talk to your vet

Keri - 3-10-2008 at 11:12 AM

Our daughters c-cker lost her back legs too, Her vet told her to wait a bit. it might be a temporary thing. She did regain her legs after a while. Also I see a terrier walking around here in a little wheeltype thing carrying his back legs. he walks with his owners everywhere. Good luck with your baby,k

Paulina - 3-10-2008 at 11:34 AM

Keri has a point there. Our bulldog Charlie lost his back legs too. We took him in to see Dr. Antonio in Ensenada who was able to prescribe meds that did the trick. We opted out of surgery because of his age. His legs lasted another 3 yrs. before we had to put him down.

Good luck, we'll be thinking good dog thoughts for you guys.

Paulina,

I am really sorry for your lose. Upsets me that the vet did not address and attack the issue better. My buddy is getting up there and it bothers and scares me terribly to know I am going to loose him within five years or less.

Paulina,
So sorry for your loss. Cora looks like she was a fun and happy doggie. You provided her with some great adventures and have some great photos to remember her by. I know this is a sad time. I hope your memories will help you heal.

"Death is nothing at all...I have only slipped away into the next room... I am I, and you are you... Whatever we were to each other, that we are still. Call me by my old familiar name, speak to me in the easy way you always used. Put no difference into your tone; wear no forced air of solemnity or sorrow. Laugh as we always laughed at the little jokes we enjoyed together. Play, smile, think of me, pray for me. Let my name be ever the household word it always was. Let it be spoken without effect, without the ghost of a shadow on it. Life means all that it ever meant. It is the same that it ever was; there is absolutely unbroken continuity. Why should I be out of mind because I am out of sight? I am waiting for you, for an interval, somewhere very near just around the corner...All is well."
