Pemex rip off...Cuidad Constitucion

bajajudy - 3-8-2008 at 07:51 AM

Pemex #2567
Second on the right headed south before the town
Past the Puerto San Carlos turn off on the left headed north.
They said that there was a problem with the pump and the guy wrote 86.88 in the dust on our bumper and said he would have to add that to the final amount. Fortunately Jim had noticed that was the amount on the pump when we pulled and and said....No, no es mio. The guy didnt argue and never would look Jim in the eye again. After this incident we remembered something similiar on our last visit but we were both running around looking for clutch fluid because our clutch had gone out as we pulled into the station and the scam didnt register.
So heads up.

Here's what we do:
Pull up, look for the zeros. Ask the kid for 200 pesos of the "verde" with a 200 peso note and a five or ten peso coin in hand.

Yep, or not even for a second.

Pay with pesos to avoid the conversion scam.

Pump your own gas.

Give em a tip so they remember you on the way back.

The little kinda goofy guy, I think his name is Romero at Antonios Pemex always comes running if he can. I give him 10 pesos even when I fill up myself. He likes the steekerz and Locos swag.

Just be friendly and show them you are paying attention and its all good.

Had the same scam pulled on us in Santa Rosalia

BMG - 3-9-2008 at 01:34 PM

Now there is a locking gas cap and I keep the key. Can't start filling until I take off the cap so I can check the pump. Be especially careful if you get double-teamed. I always tip the attendant. Hell, I even ended up tipping the creeps that cheated us. (I was slow and didn't catch on to the scam until I was miles down the road and started thinking about what happened.)

For us rookie spanish speakers, what is the correct way to say it? Would a one finger salute, and shaking your head left and right be out of line? I'm trying , because of my wife, to be more "Zen" with my words, when I'm getting ripped off, or at least getting nickeled, and dimed to death. How about you can sit and rotate on it? Como se dice eso en espanol? I bet I screwed that spanish up?:?:

Leo - 3-11-2008 at 08:39 AM

Yes Judy, this is an obnoxious station> On my way north we pulled in and the guy pertended the meter was at OOO, but it was at actaally at 50.00. He had a whole show before he got it turned down to real zerro.
No tipping there.

Diver - 3-11-2008 at 08:46 AM

We had problems there a few years ago.
The newer station just north in Cuidad Insurgentes seemed fine last trip.
They even have aire in the aire hose !!

.

DrTom - 3-12-2008 at 06:57 PM

well i learned my lesson at aramburo pemex in san jose.....when i get out of the truck, i focus on the pump meter......i wait for them to zero before i take my eyes off it.....then i say, lleno porfavor......i know how much my tank takes so no problema now.....thanks to your guys advice...

never had

pacificobob - 3-13-2008 at 08:24 AM

Burned at Santa Rosalia

Cardon Man - 3-13-2008 at 08:41 AM

...just last week on the way back down. It's not my first rodeo so I was upset with myself for being worked. But you know how it goes...tired after a long day of driving and not paying attention. I never stop in Santa rosalia either just because of the rip off history there. I pulled in and asked the guy to fill it up with verde. Didn't look at the pump. It wasn't zeroed I bet . When I finally looked it was on 100 pesos and I need twice that to fill up. Like a rookie I let the guy pump another 100 pesos to top me off. As I pulled out I realized I'd been had. I wasn't even close to topped off. They took me for 100 pesos. Didn't want to waste a second arguing with that punk so I chalked it up to experience and took my medicine. no fun!

I haven't done Baja in a few years after many years of doing so. I've been hanging in San Carlos for the last couple getting my mom settled there.

I used to always fill up in San Ignacio and avoid Santa Rosalia as best I can. But then used them a fair share when I used to hang out in San Lucas Cove.

David K - 4-3-2008 at 08:22 AM

Insurgentes was a good station... avoid Constitucion and the original downtown Sta. Rosalia station... I do think they also own the San Ignacio station?

Pescador - 4-3-2008 at 09:18 AM

Santa Rosalia has three stations now with a fourth being opened in the real near future. If you are coming into town from the North the first station is owned by the nefarious person who owns the old station across from the malecon. We only see unknowing tourists in those two stations. Makes you want to go up and tell them to read Bajanomads. The station on the right hand side just before the marina is the one all of us locals use and it is fantastic. In fact, they do not allow the CREAD guys to solicit donations there which is fine. I think they do good work but I got a little tired of always being solicited when Istopped for gas.
So Santa Rosalia is a great place for gas but you need to stop at the right station.

Pappy Jon - 4-5-2008 at 12:00 PM

Wow. I hadn't heard of any issues lately and thought this was behind us. I had no issues on my last trip, but then I only bought fuel in LA Bay, Gonzaga, and San Felipe. If I pull into a new town I check to see if the locals are getting fuel. If no, me neither. I got ripped off once, and that was one of the two stations on the circle in San Felipe.

losfrailes - 4-5-2008 at 05:02 PM

You know, I have lived here for over 10 years now. And to my knowledge I have never been ripped off at a PEMEX, including the one at Santa Rosalia. In the past, it was the only station, so what you gonna do, drive 150 miles to keep from getting shorted on the gallon.
If you go into a station and ask for gas, you simply need to watch what you are getting. If you get overcharged, the reason can usually be found right in your own passenger compartment. Watch what the attendant is doing!
The older station in Santa Rosalia has a well defined reputation with outsiders and WITH THE MEXICAN GOVERNMENT of underdelivering, still people use that station. The station north of Santa Rosalia about 1.5 miles is owned by the same RECOGNIZED owner. The station in San Ignacio is owned by the same RECOGNIZED owner aare two or three of the stations in Guerrero Negro.
Now the problem is managing your tank so you do not have to participatein this RECOGNIZED owners routine. Gas up at Villa Maria prior to Guerrero Negro, gas at the new station opposite the old foundry in Santa Rosalia is trustworthy, then the station south of Mulege on Mex 1 can be trusted.
Be careful of the stations in the center of Constitution, however, there is a new modern station just south of Insurgentes that is trustworthy.
None of this is to exduse or justify the cheating SOB at the Santa Rosalia-San Ignacio-Guerrero Negro stations. Simply to let you know that is has been going on for a long time and the only way to stop it is to stop patronizing those offensive stations.
Whew!

BCSTech - 4-6-2008 at 07:44 AM

For newer readers, there is another version of gas scams where the attendant takes your money, then returns waving another smaller bill saying you underpaid.

This has become the method favored at a couple of stations in the Los Cabos area recently. In one incident, a 50 peso note was substituted for a 500. Make sure you know what you're paying. Smile and tell the attendant the amount you are handing over - "quinientos"
