Something Big in Tijuana Today

Gypsy Jan - 3-12-2008 at 08:31 PM

While eating lunch at La Palapa Gigante on Ninos Heroes, we could hear the sound of several large helicopters flying over, heading roughly southeast (cue soundtrack from Apocalypse Now).

A little bit later, several trucks full of federales roared by in the same direction, and then what seemed to be the entire Tijuana police force rushed down the same route.

Some minutes later, at least a dozen fire trucks and maybe the same number of ambulances also went by, sirens and lights flashing, also heading in the same direction.

I heard on the news that a top lieutenant in the Arellano Felix cartel (an American) had been captured and would be handed over to the American authorities, but the report came on air less than a half hour after we witnessed the huge deployment of all the military and civil authority personnel, so I doubt the two are directly connected.

Anyone know anything more?

La Frontera reported that Gustavo Rivera Martinez, de facto leader of the Arellano Felix Cartel was captured along with others who supported his operations. He is a US citizen and will therefore be deported immediately to his country.
Attached to the article a hundred or so comments. Some speculate that the recent release of Francisco A.F. is related.

Did the guys you saw in the pickup trucks have 50 caliber machine guns with beltfeed mounted in the back?

For the update. I am glad that they are protecting the first lady of Mexico.

For Nomads who don't know about dif, maybe you could explain (more here) about the good work it does.

Cheer up, he will serve up to two weeks in the American system and then released back to Mexico.

I think what we know via "news" reporting, is the tip of the iceberg. The release of Francisco Rafael Arellano Felix back to Mexico had to be some kind of deal - either they wanted him "at large" to be killed by his enemies or hit men, or he's now an informant with drug dealing rights. Would make a good movie ("I thought he was with them -- isn't he with them?").

Might have been this arrest:

Woooosh - 3-13-2008 at 12:26 PM

LOL. Of course the entire armed parade was to protect the presidents wife. If there was a real gunfight battle most of them would have been running the other way!

Was there one of these?

Check out the Dillon Tactical Vehicle video!

Not Gatling Guns

Hubby corrected me - the Mexicans are using light duty, 30 caliber belt-fed machine guns on the trucks.
