Killing time in Tijuana...

Mexray - 3-17-2008 at 05:43 PM

...while waiting for the Bronco's new paint to dry...You can çlick on the pic's to get a larger image...

On Ave. Revolution...Took a picture of some tourists taking pictures of the Grande ''MacDonald's Arch''...

Then I was treated to a Guitar Solo by a passing gentleman...

So I decided that was a neat way to pick up a few Peso's...

That worked out so good, I bought a curio shop and tried my hand at Hawking some T-shirts to the passing Tourists...

Well, that didn't pan out...there aren't many tourists to sell too here right now...so I went over and tried my hand at hawking Comida and Cerveza - everybody had to eat, right....

Alas, I had to take a break and try some cerveza myself...now that's the way to spend a day and celebrate good old St. Paddy's Day!

"China people" is an extremely ignorant way to describe someone coming from another part of the world.

PabloS - 3-17-2008 at 07:38 PM

Soo what's your "intelligent" description???

Asian. Eastern. Chinese, even. There's nothing wrong with sounding like an adult when describing someone of another ethnicity, that's all.

Lauriboats - 3-17-2008 at 07:41 PM

Looks like you had a great day just killing time.

fdt - 3-17-2008 at 07:49 PM

arn, I would have loved to go time killing with you.

lizard lips - 3-17-2008 at 08:28 PM

THE PHOTOS ARE GREAT BUT THE ONE WITH THE MARIACHI DRINKING THE BEER BEING SUNG TO BY YOU IS A REAL HOOT. YOU HAD A GREAT DAY!

Mango - 3-17-2008 at 08:42 PM

Ken, I'm hoping/thinking "China people" may have just been a typo or mis-edit, possibly a result of too many beers with the mariachi guy. At least he capitalized China...

In fact I'm pretty tired today and made/caught a few typos just in this simple post. It's funny what 12 and a half hours working in the sun will do to your brain.

This Asian thanks you Ken. I'm sure there was no offense intended. Pacifico sure looked good Mexray, think I'll have one. Nice pics. In the Baja/In Baja; Smokey the bear/Smokey Bear; China people/people from China; Frisco/San Francisco......just don't call me Shirley:biggrin: Salud

Hook - 3-17-2008 at 09:02 PM

So, I should be offended if someone calls me an American guy or a guy from the US?

Who knew!!!!

Hell, I meant to type "Chinese"....

Mexray - 3-17-2008 at 09:14 PM

...but got side tracked...I just love it when I get to 'ruffle' a few PC feathers, once in a while...;)

***you'll notice the reference to ANY race has been eliminated, thanks for showing me the errors of my ways...

BTW...I was smoking a 'stogie' when the guitar playing person came by. When we switched places, I handed him my cigar...and he started puffing away on it! He got a big kick out of my small gag...and a nice tip made him happier!

The waiter persons were at the Escape Bar, and are a good bunch! I've been by several times during my time here in TJ to sample their supply of Pacifico's. A young couple sitting there handed one of the waiters their camera to take their picture - all three of the waiters sprang into action on the street pretending to take pictures of each other...a great gag that had everyone laughing...sort of a Three Stooges kind of routine...

Fun in life is where you find it...even in good old Tijuana Town!

No. American guy, guy from the US. Sounds good. America people? What if those Asians were Americans? I understand where Ken was coming from, and I also feel Mango is correct "typo.

Woooosh - 3-18-2008 at 12:28 AM

they probably weren't chinese at all. TJ has a high Japanense poopulation. They hid out in Mexico during WWII while all the Japanese in CA were forced into internment camps. Oh geesh- I just said "Japanese", I mean't "nips"

Woos,
I guess that is your attempt at humour.....too bad it's a pathetic effort. Put your white hood back on and crawl back under your rock.

Baja Bernie - 3-18-2008 at 05:36 AM

You are just going to have to get a little more PC correct or someone just might call you racist--just forget the 'grown up' stuff.

Pictures were great and the thoughts behind them even better.

capitolkat - 3-18-2008 at 06:18 AM

I wonder-- seems like every Baja native refers to all Asians as Chine(sp)-- they mean no offense- it's just their descriptor for Asians- Mexray- that's the way I took it and maybe the way you meant it- How much does a paint job for a Bronco run in TJ?- Norm

Martyman - 3-18-2008 at 08:43 AM

TJ is great. You just have to prepare yourself for the comments when you walk down the street. I've always found that laughing works.

Ged,

Like Matryman said "laughing works". Ignorant is ignorant does. I served in the military with guys like this, he can't help it.

Tony,
Thanks for the reminder....I took my meds so I am doing better now..

It's just when folks like that open their mouths and I see inside their mind, I am tempted to take a stroll through that empty space.

Onward to the day at hand...

Whew!........always wanting to "sound good", dontcha know.

You see, this is the conundrum that is race relations in this day and age. High profile members of a specific minority deciding what is and what is not offensive for their underlings. Of course, that has been a moving target over the years.

The current debate within the Democratic Party is a perfect example of the hypocrisy of all this. Any reference to Obama's race/color is met with derision as "playing the race card' or "America being beyond all that".

And at the same time, candidates curry favor from organizations like the NAACP, LULAC and condone the existence of organizations like the Congressional Black Caucus. Isnt the very acceptance of organizations like this much more offensive than someone referring to someone by a geographic descriptor?

No wonder everyone is confused about what is "politically correct" to say and do.

Ray, I really enjoyed your photos - spending a day in TJ relaxing in the sun and interacting with the locals. I feel rested now and need a Pacifico badly!

My turn to jump in.
No, they, the Japanese comunity, did not hide out in México, they were mexican citizens and residents and as a matter of fact if not for one Kingo Nonaka, Tijuana would not even have a photographic history of its residents, officials and growth of this city.
Manuel Avila Camacho, president of México 1940-1946 sent all of the people of japanes decendence to concentration camps even thou there was no evidence that they were spies or any of that, just because of theire ancestry and looks. 13 latinamerican countries did the same during the war, Peru beeing the worst of all in this masive violation of human rights.
I think you need to take a Tijuana tour.

Sharksbaja - 3-18-2008 at 12:26 PM

Thanks fdt. History is such an important element for understanding attitudes and racism. Most young Americans probably have no idea how our next door neighbors(friends) were treated during that tumulutous period. It would almost be akin to rounding up all the Muslims after 9/11 and incarcerating them. Should have only been the Saudis(our dear friends).;)Oh my, what did I say? They may decide to hike oil prices!!!
I think Hook has a good grip of how this country treats race issues.

Sorry Ray.
I remember heading to TJ in the early 70s for "diamond tuck and roll" seat upholstery. Same period that Earl Shibe(sp?) offered paint jobs for any car any color> $29.99.:wow:

MrBillM - 3-18-2008 at 12:42 PM

A few years ago, my Mexican Landlord, asked me if a friend's wife was "China".

When I said "NO, she's Filipina". He shrugged his shoulders and said "All the same thing".

When in Rome (or Mexico ?).....................................

I've got an old friend who was interned as a Youngin' in the WWII West Coast roundup and he uses the word "Jap". Never heard him say Nip, though.

It's typical for the PC crowd to pick those little nits while while being surrounded by issues of actual import.

I guess those pesky little nits are easier to shake off.

Nomads,

I think there is a difference between "political correctness" and respecting others.

Sharksbaja - 3-18-2008 at 01:01 PM

True enough, not synonomous.

Yeah....One of them actually means something.

Woooosh - 3-18-2008 at 03:03 PM

I call my puppy a "cochina" (sp?) every time she pees on the floor. It's basically synonymous with "an unclean person" here. I guess the Orientals who settled here weren't very hygenic.

If you're going to scream racism- the Mexicans should be first in line to take blame- how many Guatemalans make it northbound across the Mexican border without being robbed and raped by the Mexican army? The Mexican gov't demands more from the US gov't than they are willing to grant to those less fortunate south of them who wnat to migrate north for a better life.

Natalie Ann - 3-18-2008 at 03:42 PM

I really enjoyed your pictures and story, Ray - thank you.
Looks like you had a great day. I can only imagine how that took place - you trading places, serenading the guitar player. Makes me smile just to think of it.

Ken Cooke - 3-18-2008 at 08:34 PM

Saludos everyone,

I had to the entire day to think over why I posted what I did, and here's my take on things. I always tell people exactly what is on my mind, I don't keep things to myself, and I don't play games w/people either.

I completely accept any appologies from Mexray. I'm not PC, I was just called "N-----" one too many times, and I don't like hearing others being called names either.

I have friends (from the Baja Grande trip in November '07)who come from Isreal, and they literally told me that I am their only Black friend because of the political situation between the Jews and the Palestinians. I know that they cannot change the actions of their country, and I don't hold this against them.

I *had* an in-law (who also happened to be Jewish) who used to trash talk about all the Mexicans, and how their "ruining this country." He was an eco-greenie who also refused to ride in my Jeep, who called my vehicle a "mass polluter", etc. Boy, am I glad to have that jerk out of my life for good.

I had a showdown on a cruise ship on the Baltic in '06 between 3 neo-N-zi skinheads - for the reason that they want to exterminate all people of African ancestry - especially when they are in their homeland.

I had another showdown with the N-zi-lowriders near my home in Sun City, CA. They flashed their Adolf Hitler tattoos, hoping it would scare me, but to no avail - I was pumping gas with my hand on the nozzle the entire time.

I had another showdown with neo-N-zis in downtown Palm Springs. The little punks and their scary girlfriends had to birdchest me for intimidation, but it didn't work, because I was ready to kill - even though I consider myself a pacifist.

I could talk about my run-ins with the police, with the 4 whites in Michigan who wanted to run me down while I rode alone on my Mtn. bike on a desolate Michigan farm road, the cop that wanted to blow my brains out, "If I had a handgun on me - denying me my 2nd Amendment rights", do you get the picture?

So, no. I'm not PC - I just have a history with racism personally affecting me.

My friends (a.k.a. "Team Isreal")

Ken Cooke - 3-19-2008 at 06:31 AM

I also wanted to add that the reason I love Baja - beyond the beauty and the serenity of the peninsula is that I don't have to endure the racism that I would otherwise deal with here in the 'states.

For instance, at a restaurant in Yuma, AZ while I waited for my meal to be prepared, the guys preparing the meal in the kitchen kept spouting off about, "N's" one of the guys was so loud that you could hear him where we were seated. When the door swung open, you could see the surprise on the cooks face. I didn't need to deal with that, nor hear it. In Baja, I don't have to deal with this.

In Flagstaff, AZ you could count the edgy, hard looks from everyone in the restaurants there on hands and feet. In Baja, I get nothing but warmth, leading me to conclude that Arizona is no place for me to travel and feel any warmth from strangers.

As a Jeeper, I'd love to see Utah, but from what I've read about the resurgence of White Nationalism/Neo-N-ziism, is it really worth my hard-earned money to go there? My money would go much farther in Baja - on gasoline, hotels, and although it's no Jeeping mecca, there's still loads of great places to explore without having to deal with the nonsense I'd otherwise be subjecting myself to.

VIVA BAJA! :bounce:

It's been fun reading all the comments...

Mexray - 3-20-2008 at 06:12 PM

...when I just originally thought it would be fun to take a picture of people taking their own pictures, with a Tijuana landmark in the background...I guess my sense of humor's a bit warped at times...

What ever the comments, it's probably healthy to get them out in the open to get a brief snapshot of each other's personality...
