Rosarito Beach Spring Break 08 Thread

Woooosh - 3-19-2008 at 11:51 AM

Thought I'd start a new thread for us to share Spring Break observations.

Pre-Easter....

I took some out-of-town friends to dinner in Puerto Nuevo at around sunset last night (Tuesday) and the place was deserted. Only four other tables in Ortegas (not a wise dining choice), only one was of gringos like me (my guests are Mexican). All the other restaurants were deserted and parking was so plentiful on the street that we parked a few different times while shopping for s (SP?). The vendors were very nice and obviously very desperate for more people. We were literally chased from one end of town to the other by people trying to get us into their restaurants- but since we ate first before shopping, we just chatted about the lack of people/business and promised to try their place on a future visit. A little hope never hurts.

Driving back through the tourist section of Rosarito around 9pm- it was very quiet (except for the music). I didn't see many spring breakers on the streets or in the open-air clubs. I'm sure there will be crowds, because most kids pay in advance for their all-inclusive spring break packages.

What's left of the beach (much errosion this year) looks great. The Rangers are keeping it raked and dump the trash daily. The horse people aren't getting much business on our end of the beach- but they are cleaning up behind the animals (although people look at me like I'm nuts when I pick up my dogs droppings). You can only walk the beach from end to end at low tide now though- as a few new projects (and some old foundatons) jut out into the water and make it impossible to get by when the tide is up. Rosarito Beach is apparently immune from the rising waters of global warming.

Less then half a dozen campers in Punta Banda area. Pabloff, Villerano and all other camps are hurting as is Vonnie's sport fishing and the local restraunts.

DENNIS - 3-19-2008 at 12:10 PM

From what I hear locally, lots of businesses are blameing Nancy Conroy for everything. They act as though she printed lies. Ignorance is anything but bliss in Punta Banda these days.

docsmom - 3-19-2008 at 12:14 PM

Woooosh,
Check your U2U.

Is this the Punta Banda development just south of the proposed Trump project? I heard they had 2 fighting HOA associations and living there was less than pleasant. Is this why the Trump project hasn't started yet.. land ownership problems?

DENNIS - 3-19-2008 at 01:16 PM

Punta Banda is twenty miles south of Ensenada. La Bufadora is in Punta Banda. Sometimes Paulina and Minnow are in Punta Banda. Dern is here right now. We drank alcohol together yesterday at Sharky's which is also in Punta Banda.

I was trying to think of a Punta Banda anything in your area and, would it be Punta Bandera?

Ask Nancy Conroy. Albeit, she probably doesn't know the difference between Punta Bandera and Punta Banda, either.

Can't mention all the good stuff. They'll be moving in on us.

So THAT'S how it is! You can't mention all the "good stuff", cause they'll move in on you. I get it now. You mentioned all the "Bad stuff" in your previous post to keep them all away!

Yeah, I'm bad. Real bad.

 See you soon,

I have nothing against you folks who live in Punta Banda but unless Sharky's has moved, it is in Esteban Cantu, not Punta Banda. Though we're not on the beach, we take pride in our little pueblito and don't want to be mistaken.

It's all Punta Banda. Even Cantú is misplaced. Originally the pueblo was planned to be developed on the ocean side of the hills which back up what is the townito today. Of course, it's difficult to regulate an ejido.

Lauriboats - 3-20-2008 at 08:19 AM

I feel bad for the vendors who depend on the spring breakers and tourists to survive. So sad.

bajabound2005 - 3-20-2008 at 08:28 AM

Well, it looks like the mobs started arriving yesterday (Wednesday). Things are picking up. The crowd at El Poblano in Maneadero (not to be confused with Los Poblanos, also in Maneadero) was 10-12 deep waiting for tacos (about 30 people) and ALL of them American. Then a few CESPE and CFE workmen stopped in. Seems to be a a few folks around all the tamale stands as well. Quite a bit more traffic around Punta Banda as of yesterday.

BajaGeoff - 3-20-2008 at 01:01 PM

March has been really good for us so far. Lots of people heading to Baja, but perhaps they are not going to Rosarito.

Now people in Cantu don't want to be confused "mistaken" with people living in PB? I HAVE NOW HEARD IT ALL............

greybaby - 3-20-2008 at 06:51 PM

I was just waiting for the reaction to someone actually wanting to be associated with Cantu vs PB. Some of us like living on a road that washes down the hill - what can I say? Yes, Lizard Lips, you have heard it all. And, Dennis, Cantu was really going to be a planned development? Now I have heard it all!! The bottom line is I am just jealous because you all are South of the border right now and I am stuck working North of the border where they're telling me today is the first day of spring!!

Happy Easter to all of you!!

Paulina - 3-20-2008 at 06:55 PM

I think Cantu is most famous for it's three legged dogs. At least that's what the sign used to say.

I'll be there manana, in case my fan club wonders where I've disappeared to.

Save me a coca lite at Sharkys, Dennis.

I guess so. It was an ejido designation I suppose. Territory marking like a dog will do to a neighborhood of tires. It was probably planned before the road to La Bufadora was cut on the other side of the mountain. It just made more sense to locate near the road so, being an Ejido, they just did what they wanted to do. Land reform gave these folks all this power so they wouldn't have any more armed revolts.

Unhijacking the Subject

Gypsy Jan - 3-20-2008 at 07:55 PM

Went into Rosarito midafternoon today.

Lots of traffic - autos and people on sidewalks.

The city, from a car window view seemed to be busy with visitors.

I hope that everyone has a happy and safe Easter Holiday.

bajabound2005 - 3-21-2008 at 11:50 AM

Beachbum1A just called from Puerto Nuevo, enroute from Ensenada to the US. He said all the beaches are PACKED! Today's El Vigia reports the same thing from yesterday.

bajabound2005 - 3-21-2008 at 02:45 PM

Just returned from Punta Banda/Campo La Jolla. Beaches and campgrounds are packed! Stores are very busy. Looks like a normal Santa Semana in these parts:bounce:

roundtuit - 3-21-2008 at 03:26 PM

Here in BCS we call it Semna Sants as do the locals. Must be a culture differents
Norte - Sur

roundtuit - 3-21-2008 at 03:27 PM

After I went there with Doug (Baja Nomad) a few years ago, I always go back to CHELA'S... it is the place on the top floor of the 3 story building... well signed, the first business street to the left after entering the Puerto Nuevo arch... YUM!

bajabass - 3-22-2008 at 01:04 PM

Another vote for Chela's. Good food, nice people. Wish I could be down there now! I have my father-in-law, and my wife's nephew from Ensenada spending Semana Santa here. Carne asada for Easter dinner, YUM!

That's because they have all gone to San Felipe! It's packed there right now, and as we left yesterday, more were heading south from Mexicali and beyond.

The majority are camping, one good windy day should flush them all out...

You folks are right about Chelas. Took a nephew there many moons ago and had a great meal there. A few people were bad-mouthing Ortegas because they use "catalina"lobsters not local? What does that mean. The only REAL lobster I know of come from my neck of the woods- Massachusetts. You know, the kind of lobster with two claws? lol

They come frozen from lobster farms in chunkyalandia and points south. Been going on for 20+years.
