Tidal Pools - Sn Quintin or Guerrero Negro

Festus - 3-20-2008 at 09:36 PM

Anyone have suggestions on where to find good tidal pools in either Sn Quintin or GN? The kids like to poke around in good tidal pools and see what they can discover. What kind of sea life can we expect to see in the tidal pools there?

Tide pools require a rocky shoreline and both of those places are large lagoons/estuaries. There's nothing but sand for miles.

Going south of San Quintin the first good tidepooling area should be the rocky headlands near El Rosario.

G.N. is sandy until you get to El Morro but that's not quality tidepooling. Asuncion has good tidepooling starting at San Roques but that's really far.

Correct, you need a rock shoreline for tidepools...

The kids will get a kick out of La Lobera, 6 miles north of El Rosario (20 miles south of San Quintin)... See some photos, and directions: http://vivabaja.com/505/page4.html

Another area closer to Ensenada is Punta Cabras, north of Erendira and Coyote Cal's...

San Quintin is rocky or actually volcanic if you go to the coast, very beautiful.

Was just in SQ and drove over to the coast. Turn at the Military base and take the road all the way to the beach. You will pass this sign along the way.
There are tide pools there but not much in them You almost need 4x4 to get past the first beach after that there are some rocky cliffs and some houses and a serf camp and tide pools then a long beach that you can drive on for miles takes you out to the point. more tide pools at the end of the beach not much in them either.
I would try Santo tomas or Erindera or if you are going as far as Gerrero Negro you might as well go to Asuncion or somewhere on the Sea of Cortez

Try La Bocana, just west of Santo Tomas (a few miles south of Maneadero). Lots of pools, and site of the famous house from "God and Mr. Gomez."

(Not sure this is actually the house, but you can see some pools)
