The correct spelling of GUERRERO NEGRO is just that. It is not Guerro Negro or any other godawfulthing we see on this board.

If you don't spell it correctly, the SEARCH function becomes useless. Unless, of course, someone wants to create a NOMAD LEXICON.

That assumes that the person searching knows how to spell it. Given the percentage of correct spelling to begin with, that assumption is doubtful. :lol:

That said, I personally think that people not taking the time to learn minimal things about a foreign country they visit reflects badly upon them. But, I am obviously in the minority. :rolleyes:

I've always kinda liked "San Quitin" as in I'm quitin'. I've refrained from using BOLA since Roberto pointed out what an insult that was to the people of Bahia de Los Angeles. Having lived in San Francisco, I share natives' umbrage at "Frisco". But, ultimately this is an unwinable battle, no?

I'm also amazed at how many people holding themselves out as "Mexico Experts" refer to "ViNcente Fox". The man's name is Vicente, just like Vicente Fernandez. It may be the equivalent of Vincent in English, but there is no such Mexican name as "Vincente", unless of course...

La Mision--fem......would be followed correctly by Vieja but, it sounded better the incorrect way.

This is probably one of many dumb questions I have in storage, but what exactly is the objection to "BOLA"? Is it simply the abbreviation (i.e., "Frisco" versus "San Francisco") or is it something deeper than that? I have known for years that "BOLA" is not politically correct, but I have never known why.

Mexico converses largely with acronyms such as BOLA. This one may not pass their test because it's an acronym for a pile of English words, leaving the Mexican with a term for his town which translates to "Ball."

Actually Mission Viejo is technically correct, as it originally was part of Rancho Mission Viejo (RMV). And Rancho is masculine....

RMV was established in 1882 at a size of 200,000 acres and was composed of Rancho Mission Viejo, Rancho Santa Margarita y Las Flores, and Rancho Trabuco. What became the City of Mission Viejo was split off from the original Rancho when it was developed the 1960's.

Descendants of the original families still own and farm a little over 20,000 acres of the original RMV land. The government, of course, bought the Rancho Santa Margarita y Las Flores portion for Camp Pendleton in WWII.

La Jolla (California) is actually supposed to mean The Jewel... which in Spanish is LA JOYA!

As for Baja place names: Puertecitos, Guerrero Negro, Alfonsina's, Santa Rosalillita, Santo Tomas, San Vicente, San Quintin, Los Barriles, Loreto, Mulege, Rosarito are all frequently mis-spelled... and we have had many a posts about that over the years.

Manos is one of those rare words like agua which uses the opposite gender form of the: EL Agua, LAS Manos...

I just joked with my wife that after a few months in Baja, our spellcheck on our computer is going to have a new Spanish Edition added after trying to name all the places we've been on our travel blogs.

I try and always check my speeling off of the maps or travel books we have....so hopefully I'm safe

I've asked the question of educated mexicans many times - nobody was able to explain why "el agua" instead of "la agua". You're the first, and you're not even a native speaker! Where'd you get that information?

OK, OK,

My previous post stated how I felt about the spelling police, but they seem alive and well and very focused.

So, let's see how we can intimidate and encourage more people NOT to post because they, gods forbid, may make a spelling, or even worse a GRAMMAR error. :?:

Here are some of the common errors that change meaning, and we sure don't want THAT to happen. :no:

1. there, their or they're --- very different words

2. advise and advice---different parts of speech and we all know that to use a verb when a noun is needed is just awful.

3. well and good----different---again, adverb vs adjective---very different meanings.

4. its and it's --- breaks a common rule but " it's" is not possesive, it is a contraction

5. who and whom --- subject pronoun vs. object pronoun

6. AND please, never say "It was me" when it should be "It was I" -- predicate nominative.

Thus, if making sure you compose your posts with perfect Spanish spelling is so important, doesn't it follow that perfect English spelling and grammar should also be required?

(Above sentence could use some grammar improvement)

Careful folks, the spelling and grammar police are watching.

Last thought (opps, incomplete sentence) Typographical errors are simply now allowed.

And spelling errors and typos, that's okay. But when you spell the name of a TOWN wrong...well, you can't even find it on the map!

But, if it is close, I think most can find it or ask for clarification. Besides, even with correct spelling, it often needs clarification ----which San Juanico, or which Punta Prieta, etc.

Opps, the use of etc. is just a lazy way to avoid more examples. I guess it should be banned.

But seriously folks....... Bajabound wasn't trying to be the POlice. He did us a favor I think by reminding us to try harder to communicate better. For many of us, the message in the post is our persona -- it's who we are (or how we want to be perceived). That perception is key in a true forum where people share not only information but ideas and personal things which can create real friendships between board members. When the forum is used for travel info don't knowledgeable Bajaphiles want to make sure place names are correct? We don't want to send new Baja travelers to the wrong place or suggest he buy a couple of Rapoolas for fishing. There will always be enough members who are either uninformed or apathetic (they say "I don't know and I don't care")( pun intended ) for those of us struggling to be better communicators to snipe at.
