Help for Manolo in Asuncion

Tiomiguel - 3-29-2008 at 09:40 AM

See Shari's post for the details on our friend, Manolo's plight. We are all very concerned about Manolo and our son Ben, who is a friend of Noe and Ismael asked if he could send some money to help them out with travel costs and accommodation for the family while Manolo is in La Paz.

We will be donating and will start off with a 1,000 peso ($100) donation from our family as Manolo and his family are really part of our Mexican family. We know how little everyone really has down there and that the travel and food costs, loss of income, and incidentals are huge for such a family.

I have some funds down there that we can provide in cash to the family to assist. Any one else interested in donating can do so through Pay Pal where you can use paypal or visa through my son Ben’s account if they wish.

They have little and any amounts of donations will be acknowledged on the card given to Manolo’s family to help out. So if you are interested, follow the procedures outlined below. No pressure, every dollar or $10 will help them out and be appreciated. This is not something I do ever, so it’s pretty unusual but trust that the funds will get there.

I am a Chartered Accountant living in London Ontario, Canada and a sometimes resident of the Beach House in Bahia Asuncion. If you need more information on me, u2u me and I will give you more individually. Also excuse my son's spelling error on Asuncion. For those that know me, Shari, Diver, Bajagypsies, Bajaboy, Trotters, I think you know who I am.

Here is the link that you can donate through and again I know that the family will appreciate every dollar in their time of need. Just copy into your address and it will take you to a link for my son's account with Paypal. Thank you for your assistance and keep your prayers and good wishes coming for Manolo and his family.

If I have done something wrong with requesting this, on this site, please forgive me and let me know. please forgive me and let me know.
The administrator can contact me for questions.

We will give it a try this way. We certainly have NO problem trusting you.

We were wishing we were in BA right now so we could help, and now you have provided a way to do so.

Thanks and we will let you know how it works. Let's keep hoping there is more and more good news. Everyone here who has met him seems to first refer to his smile---it was the first thing we thought about.

Great idea Miguel.
For those that don't know TioMiguel; he is a first class guy that I would/have trusted with my kids or my money.

Shari,
Please add $1000 pesos of mine to the Manolo Fund and get it to them asap.
Thank you !

could not use just that part that showed as a link (blue) but cut and paste the entire address and it worked just fine.

mil gracias amigos...

Tiomiguel - 3-29-2008 at 10:52 AM

Thanks for the endorsement and the funds, Diver and Diane and John. As we know every dollar helps. Hope all is well with your family and you back in the North. Our hopes and prayers go with Manolo and his family.

vgabndo - 3-29-2008 at 01:51 PM

Thanks Grover...

This is a very easy way to help. Lots of moths flew out of my vacation depleted wallet, but man-o-man does it feel good to still be able to assist.

All our best from Perry and Cathy

I'm in - thanks Grover for the link.

shari - 3-29-2008 at 07:56 PM

thanks so much grover and all of you who have responded. I haven't heard yet from the doctors meeting today...there is a possibility they will move him to Guadalajara..where these funds will really help out the family so they can go with him there. I will post when I know more...I am deeply honored to have such great nomad amigos.

DianaT - 3-29-2008 at 08:12 PM

Thanks for the update, Shari.

I have heard wonderful things about the hospital in Guadalajara, so if he is transferred there, he should receive first class care.

But it will be expensive for the family---keep us informed.

Glad to help in any way I can.

Natalie Ann - 3-30-2008 at 10:42 AM

If it's ok to wait until next Thursday when I get paid, I will be happy to donate. Meanwhile I will continue with lit candles and prayers.... I believe they really do make a difference.

Nena

Lauriboats - 3-30-2008 at 01:32 PM

Count us in on the donation. We don't know Manolo or his family, but we feel a strong connection to our new community and would like to help his family. Jim and Lauri

shari - 3-30-2008 at 02:25 PM

thank you again and again all of you...you are right Natalie that the prayers and candles make a BIG difference when a soul is between worlds. Manolo is breathing a bit, but still on life support to assist breathing..he is still in very critical condition and not out of danger yet but is stabilized...not much better but certainly not any worse. Keep those prayers, healing energy and positive thoughts coming and candles lit. Stay with us Manolo!!!!!!

Mr. Gypsy here,
Just donated. And a special thanks to TioMiguel for setting up this means to help out Manolo and his family. Manolo is a very stand up guy and a valued neighbor and friend to us. Our hopes and prayers are with them.

Tiomiguel - 3-30-2008 at 07:39 PM

The response for this has just been fantastic and I know that Manolo's family will just be amazed by all of your generosity. I know that we have met many of you Nomads, but this has really made us appreciate even more the Baja Nomads and the good work done by this site.
As a newbie I and my wife now understand why everyone is so addicted to this site, its the great people that love to share.

Thanks to Shari for keeping us up to date on his condition and how things are going.
We hope to someday meet many of you on our trips down there. For now keep the prayers coming and hope for Manolo's recovery.

Bajagypsy - 3-31-2008 at 09:39 AM

I have to say, that the amount of people that are donating to either Manolo or Coco, really warms my heart. It seems that nomads truly care about mankind, and I for one find it rare in this day and age. You all make me very proud to be a Baja Nomad.

Our dear Manolo had a crisis last night and regressed....not good news unfortunately..but is still hanging by a thread to his life. Pray hard amigos.

Bajagypsy - 3-31-2008 at 02:33 PM

Oh Shari that is such horrid news. We will double our efforts in sending healing energy.

rbwrivers - 3-31-2008 at 04:24 PM

Thanks everyone for your help, it is much appreciated. I understand that Shari is away for a day or two so might not be able to post as often for updates on Manolo. Hopefully good news soon.

shari - 4-1-2008 at 06:20 PM

We are back in Asuncion for the funeral of yet another San Roque man who suffered a heart attack yesterday. Unfortunately no good news for Manolo either but he's hanging in there....very sad days indeed. We will be in San Roque for awhile and checking email every couple days.

Bajagypsy - 4-1-2008 at 06:24 PM

Shari, who had the heart attack in San Roque

shari - 4-4-2008 at 02:44 PM

Our friend and farrier Bebo...his father died of a fatal heart attack..diabetes related like many deaths here. Very sad as he was around my age! NOw on to the good news...Manolo has taken a turn for the better...he even opened his eyes and moved his toes and head a bit. His organs are functioning well and looks like his head is OK too...we are all very hopeful even though the doctors say he's not out of the woods just yet but has made some positive progress...thanks so much everyone for your support and prayers...they are working!!!! The kids are doing better now too. Tiomiguel has sent the funds to the family in La Paz where they are gratefully appreciated...the family thanks all of you.

Bajagypsy - 4-4-2008 at 03:57 PM

Oh Shari that is the most wonderful news about Manolo and the kids. Sorry to here of the funeral.

Skipjack Joe - 4-4-2008 at 04:08 PM

YES!
YES!
YES!

So glad to read this. Good news is always welcome.

shari - 4-4-2008 at 04:53 PM

We are all very relieved and encouraged by this for sure...his wife Minnie has been whispering in his ear about all his gringo amigos pulling for him. They may take out the tubes in his throat next week so he may possibly be able to talk....skipjack said it best...yes yes YES!

DianaT - 4-4-2008 at 05:22 PM

Such good news about Manolo----maybe not out of the woods, but sounds like he is headed in the right direction. :bounce::bounce:

SiReNiTa - 4-4-2008 at 05:51 PM

wow...mom had told me about this thread but i never thought it would get this big...first of all...i want to say....thank's to everyone for their prayers...even though alot of people would laugh and say that praying doesn't help it really does...pray and have faith....and well...oh gosh...those kids are my baby's...i would do anything for those two...and manolo has always been there for our family...i talked to ismael on msn the other day and well...as you can imagine he is not feeling very well but he is being so strong...i admire him because i know i could not be strong with my mom or juan lying in a hospital bed...so it's only fair that all of us stay strong and support them...thank's so much for all the donations...it really warms my heart and brings tears to my eyes to see how much you care...

god bless you nomads....

manolo doing what he does best

shari - 4-5-2008 at 02:32 PM

I just found this photo of Manolo doing what he loves to do which is cook for people...he is always cooking for us at our family gatherings and sunday feasts and he also is known for his patience when communicating with gringos...he's a great spanish teacher and an integral part of our spanish immersion programs. Hurry back Manolo!

Bajagypsy - 4-5-2008 at 03:08 PM

Our family continues and will continue to send healing energy to Manolo until he gets home.

Tiomiguel - 4-6-2008 at 06:16 PM

Good news with Manolo getting better. Again thanks to everyone for all the donations, they will be muchly appreciated. Believe it or not we have raised $1,500 for his family and their needs and the money is being wired down to thier family in La Paz. If any more donations come in they will be sent with the next wire transfer.
Super job everyone, Baja Nomads are a very special group of people and we are proud to be part of this group.

Cheers everyone. There will be a party at the Beach House in Bahia Asuncion over the Christmas holidays this year, as usual, and our best hope is that Manolo and his family can be there to join us. Oh and yes to cook for us once again as well would be great. You are all invited.

DianaT - 4-6-2008 at 06:20 PM

Thanks for taking care of it, Mike.

I hope that when they show up at your party they bring more of those traditional Christmas treats they brought last year---forget the name, but don't forget the taste.

We hope that he just continues to improve rapidly.

John and Diane

Mike, I don't know if we met over New Years in Bahia Asuncion but hopefully we will down the road a piece.

Thank you for your thoughtfulness and efforts on behalf of Manolo. You make the Nomads proud.

YES YES YES Every day I open Nomads and look for a report on his condition. From the second picture posted here, I feel like I know him already. It will be a special moment indeed to meet him in the future.

shari - 4-10-2008 at 02:29 PM

Last night Manolo took a turn for the worst...he has an infection they can't treat because the medecine would damage his kidneys so he had a very high fever and were going to put the tubes back in etc...we were so down this morning when we heard...but a few minutes ago, his brother in law Tomas (the hardware store owner) called us and said this morning Manolo is much better....the padre bathed him and he even walked around a bit which makes us all feel so happy. The whole family is incredibly grateful for all of you who sent donations..they are so impressed with your caring....gracias amigos

DianaT - 4-10-2008 at 02:43 PM

Hope he hangs in there---hospital is no place to get an infection.

Keeping the positive thoughts going his way.

bajaboolie - 4-10-2008 at 02:47 PM

Shari,
I've been following this thread closely. Although I don't know you or him, I've been thinking positively for him and his family/friends. I'm sorry he took a turn for the worse last night, and hope he continues on the upward swing. A nice bath and a walk can do wonders! Anyway, my positive thoughts continue...

Bajagypsy - 4-10-2008 at 03:12 PM

Goodness, that is very scary, I hope that he is doing well.

Bajaboy - 4-11-2008 at 06:47 AM

That's great news about Manolo. I didn't realize that he and Tomas were related.

shari - 4-11-2008 at 10:55 AM

Oh yes, he and Tomas are very close, I spoke to him this morning again and he says that yesterday Manolo was cruisin around in a wheelchair...turns out the infection came from the IV thingy so they took it out and viola...his temperature came down and he was smiling and even talked to his son on the phone!! Again he mentioned how incredible it is that all of you care so much and he believes that together we saved his life. So great to have a happy ending story! We were talking today about how Manolo prepares abalone...most of us slice it thin in medallion type shape and Manolo slices a whole ab in half and pounds it out till it's like a tortilla size and breads it and cooks it in garlic butter...oh please hurry home Manolo!

That is the way John said his family always cooked it long ago.

Just so happy to hear good news about Manolo. Do they have any idea how much longer he will be in the hospital? The longer one is in a hospital anywhere, the more likely they are to pick up a serious infection. Hope he is home soon.

Interesting about the connection to Tomas----Tomas, the really nice man we like a lot, but boy can he sell me something whether I really want it or not.:yes:

Mexpedition - 4-11-2008 at 01:10 PM

Like you all, I have been following this thread closely, although I admit that I have been nervous about reading it on a couple of occasions. My family's been trying to send good vibes Manolo's way as well.

You Nomads are awesome. It is actions like this that made me finally stop lurking and join your troop. I hope I can someday meet Manolo, all the Ascuncionistas, and as many other Nomads as possible in Baja, and elsewhere.

shari - 4-11-2008 at 04:41 PM

thank you for coming out of the lurker closet for this post...you and others like you are one of the reasons I turned to the Nomad family for help and support...Manolo needed as many prayers and positive energy possible and we are now reaping the happiness of helping bring him back...I can't thank you all enough and look forward to introducing you Mexpedition to brother Manolo...if you are lucky, he will cook for us giving generously of his smile and huge heart...hope to see you soon amigo
