Hacienda Rancho Viejo - La Paz

oxxo - 3-29-2008 at 04:07 PM

I am surprised this restaurant has not been reviewed before. I did a search and nothing came up. We were turned on to this place by friends at Marina La Paz. It is located on Leon, one block up from Abasolo and just two blocks from Marina La Paz - an easy walk from BMG's casa.

We had breakfast there Thursday morning. I had chilaquiles incluye frijoles for 30p and OXXA had huevo ranchero con frijoles y papas fritas for 30p. Portions were huge (we didn't eat lunch that day) and very tasty. They brought extra tortillas so we could make burritos with our beans. The place is very clean with a partial ocean view. I have been told that it is open 24 hours but I have not verified that.

Our verdict is 2 thumbs up, way up! We have been told that lunch and dinner menus are equally good. We will return often, very often.

There was a thread a couple of years ago that La Paz didn't have any good places to eat. Nothing could be further from the truth.

Actually, there are quite a few posts on Rancho Viejo. On the corner of Belisario Dominguez and M. De Leon. They just completed their new building earlier this month. Our favorite is the ARRACHERA. We normally order a 1/2 kilo of ARRACHERA for the 2 of us and make our own tacos at the table. They bring the ARRACHERA with all the fixin's.

Thanks for posting this oxxo. It's not often I find LinguineLinguine making a mistake in her Spanish (like never!). It's ARRACHERA.

(Okay, so I had to look at the photo of the wall menu. Don't rain on my parade here!)

We were very very happy at this restaurant a few months ago when we rolled into town at 8:30am and wanted tacos and beer...served without a blink! With all the fixin's. Great arrachera and al pastor.
(Disclaimer:breakfast had been at 4:30am, its not that we ALWAYS drink beer at 8:30am.)

It's a long drive to La Paz so it doesn't matter what time of day it is CP- you deserve a cold one when you get there.

BMG - Help me out here... my spanglish isn't that great, so I've never figured out how to order 1/2 kilo. We've always just a bunch of arrachera tacos because I never wanted to order a full kilo... What is the proper spanglish for 1/2 kilo?

Hey bobw, why not use actual spanish? Medio kilo.

Those were the exact words I was looking for :D

My spanish is serverly hampered by being Canadian... not much use for it here. In Canada, if we order food, we generally speak in grams, i.e. 500 grams... didn't know how it was done in baja.

Gracias

My spanish is severely hampered by being me.
You have a head start by being familiar with grams! Quinientos gramas would get you that same half kilo of arrachera...

Very easy. Whenever we go there, I turn to Ana and say, "Order us a 1./2 kilo and I'll take a Pacifico." She then turns to the waitress or waiter and says something that I can't understand. A short time later the food and beer arrives.

Wow Larry, you are right. Look at that - grass...Well I thought it was gramas...I also thought ejolote was greenbean and have been using it for years. Just learned ejolote is not a word either.
It is a wonder how I get by down here!

So... is the proper (i.e. Normal La Paz ian) way to order just over 1 lb to ask for 1/2 kilo or 500 grams?

CP - 4-1-2008 at 08:04 AM

Six of one, half dozen of the other...

Alan - 4-1-2008 at 09:23 PM

I prefer the easy way and just order the whole kilo. It makes for a killer lunch the next day!

Won't work with me.

I just end up eating it all at the restaurant.:o

"Medio kilo" to get a half kilo as CP says. (I did ask LinguineLinguine to make sure.)

Here is the new Rancho Viejo building looking up De Leon from Abasolo. Hope they don't raise their prices too much to pay for it.:(
