Vizcaino Peninsula

rockman - 4-1-2008 at 05:09 PM

I'm planning another trip to the Vizcaíno Peninsula and seeking suggestions. I'm fairly familiar with the beach areas on the north side and west end, but haven't explored the hills/mountains in the south, central and coastal areas. Can anyone suggest some interesting “don’t miss” sites to visit, rockhound or photograph ? Are there accessible campsites at canyon tinajas / waterholes ? Fossils, collectable minerals, unusual vegetation, interesting ranchos, hikes, etc ? I have a good 4WD vehicle.
You may contact me direct if you prefer: normanc@olypen.com .
Thanks.

Yes, the Sierra Santa Clara... please find the lost mission!:bounce:

Seriously Norm, I would like to 'see' any water sources (springs) in the Santa Clara hills because water is mandatory for any human activity!

The Jesuit 1757 map shows a mission called 'San Juan Bautista' as "started" or 'under construction' there... and the nearby local ejido personal from Punta Abreojos know of the lost Santa Clara mission...

Is it true that you sold the Punta Final home, as another Nomad said here the other day?

Thanks for all you do in your exploring and writing in Baja Life Magazine and here!

Circled are the missions shown on the map portion here...

SMM= Santa Maria Magdalena ('started', ... but never completed. Ruins found in 1966 south of L.A. Bay may be signs of the attempt?)

DDN= Dolores del Norte (renamed Santa Gertrudis when finally established... other nearby sites like the visita of San Pablo have been mistaken for a lost mission of Dolores del Norte)

SI= San Ignacio

SJB= San Juan Bautista ('started'), west of San Ignacio (Sierra Santa Clara), but never mentioned again!

G= Guadalupe (del Sur)

SRM= Santa Rosalia de Mulege

Hi David; Yes, the Punta Final place sold last year. I hear that there are a couple of new places for sale there, but have no details.
Our Loreto "Club de Exploracion" did 2 camping trips in Feb and March, one to the Peninsula Concepcion, one to CFE's Tres Virgenes geothermal area and Playa Santa Ana. Great fun; I may write them up when I get time.
I'm back in Loreto for 2 months on 11 April; the Vizcaino trip is 18-24 April.
Hasta luego. Norm

Norm

There are many roads leading back into the mountains. Most seem to go to Ranches (both operating and abandoned) . The only road I have found going to the Santa Clara's is from the South (HWY 1 to Abreojos road). But I know there has to be others... Most of my exploring has been by ATV, not by car. And most maps of the area are not that accurate. I would say hook up with Fishin Rich (Abreojos resident) but I believe he is headed South at that time. I am up North for a month or I would go with you.

Might try the people in Asuncion.... Lots of exploring up there.
