Blossom shot

Beachgirl - 4-4-2008 at 05:41 PM

One day we drove out to the abandoned oxny mine at El Marmol. This blossom atop a cactus was about a foot wide and over two feet in height, which you wouldn't know from looking just at the photo. It was so amazing I had to jump out of the car and take this shot. By the way the mine is amazing with huge slabs of onyx in gorgeous colors just "lying" around. No sign that we saw of any of the housing...apparently when the mine was really active there were over 1000 people working/living around there. Woke up the next morning with a flat. Good thing we were at a hotel on the way north literally directly across the street from a lantera, so the repair was a breeze, instead of sweating it out with a blowout on the Baja road with no place to stop and semis around the bend

Cool shot of big cactus far away!

Taken this past March on the day of the San Felipe 250, there are quite a few of these cactus in our desert.

...I remember my first hard lesson with cactus... wearing sandals I left the firelight to p*** and promptly put my toe into a cactus...it hurt, so I reached down to pull out the spines, and now had cactus in my fingers...this hurt so I brought my finger up to my mouth to pull them out with my teeth...

maybe ten seconds had passed...
...and I had spines in my toes, my fingers, and my lips...
what could I do but laugh and sheepishly return to the firelight... and tweezers:lol:

Too bad no one had a camera.:lol:

As John got the pliers, he just kept growling about why the he)) was I wearing my Birks and it could have just as well been a snake.

This is what kept me from watching where I was walking when the cactus found me. :P

Beachgirl, isn't it fun once you can post pictures?

And a nice subtle double "shadow" image of the cactus...nice composition and the colors....what can one say?

rts551,
I see a black frog attempting to jump off the top of the broken cactus....I find myself listening to discussions between those cacti.....their postures are like stick figures relating to eachother....hard to pay attention to the road sometimes.

That thing is no doubt hundreds of years old......

Woody,
Fascinating to see the various stages of the flower, you seem to have them all from bud to seed dispursal. What gorgeous colors, I can see why they appeal to you.

Iflyfish - 4-7-2008 at 11:43 PM

Natalie,
The shapes are fascinating aren't they. It is always fascinating to see how nature repeats itself in design. Like fractals, mathmatical sequences, reproducing the shapes of shellfish and organisms.

BahaWarrior,
That cactus is older than all of your ages combined. Anyone guess how old that one really is? Comitan showed me one in La Paz that I recall was older than Jesus.

Iflyfish - 4-7-2008 at 11:48 PM

Trips,
Love the way you have captured the light, it is the light isn't it? With flat light that picture would be very ordinary, capturing the light as you have has made that cactus Pop!
Thanks,
Iflyfish

Iflyfish - 4-7-2008 at 11:52 PM

BJ,
Nice sequence of images. The third one is ALIVE with light and shadow. Is this an arial over flight of an orchard? What is this? Macro/Micro? It is the light and shadow that do that. These three images are a great way to see the impact of light and shadow.
Thanks,
Iflyfish

Iflyfish - 4-7-2008 at 11:56 PM

Ken,
It's hard to comment on your photographs, save for a "it's wonderful" "elegant" "beautiful" etc. Because your photos really are of the highest quality. One can see the "Golden Mean" expressed in these lovely receeding rows of red stressed bow ribbon on a back ground of glowing limes with white hairy spines. My eye goes back on these rows to infinity and your tight focus on the foreground facilitates the amazing depth of this image.
I really appreciate your work.

Wha? You mean older than when Lassie was a pup?

Yes, I understand they are very old, that is not the biggest one we have in our area, but the one that was closest for a group photo.

I'm thinking that one is about 400 years old...

Cool picture Ken.

Besides the wild curves and shapes I like the warm colors. The yellows and lime greens on the black background work very well.
