New Breed of "turista"

jodiego - 4-4-2008 at 03:00 PM

and I use the term loosely. You've got the people that live in baja, those that spend most of their time in baja, those that frequent it a lot, those that visit evey so often, those that drive down on weekends, those that make a trip once a year, and now you can add those that "will never come down there again". I have run into so many people here in San Diego that since reading about "all the crime" that has been happening lately, will never venture south again. It's as if they were just waiting for an excuse not to cross the border, and now they've got it. For someone like me who frequents the Tijuana to Ensenada corridor for food, shopping, surf, relaxation, and all around general enjoyment, it's a good thing to not have a lot of turista's milling about, but I feel sorry for the businesses in the area that are suffering and will continue to suffer because so many Americans feel unsafe in baja.

Well it could certainly be another reason so many people are staying away...............far away;D

Pescador - 4-4-2008 at 06:38 PM

Actually, fishing has improved at least 100% since all those people and their boats are staying north of the border. I think this place becomes more dangerous by the hour and minute. I am doing my best with friends and anyone that asks about how danerous it is down here to fill them in on just exactly how bad it has become.:(:(:(

AcuDoc - 4-4-2008 at 06:40 PM

AcuDoc - 4-4-2008 at 06:41 PM

Hey Jim

How are things safety wise etc at SLC

Ken Cooke - 4-4-2008 at 06:56 PM

Agree with them or not, these are the people who are affecting change in the level of security for tourists and expat residents in Baja. If the dollar flow into the country had not been drastically reduced by fearful tourists going elsewhere, the new protective measures would never have been put in place. It wasn't until the cash registers rang empty that the government decided to act. It had very little to do with safety.

x-actly!!! THE main reason why other than your average "tourist" hates going to mexico.....

HCR - 4-4-2008 at 07:21 PM

Not surprising that U.S. citizens are reacting thusly, what we the constant barrage of messages they receive designed to keep them in a state of perpetual fear. Anyone reported seeing Osama in Baja? Not yet? Just wait.

It's the border wait that keeps them and us from doing the daily trips we used to make.
That's about it.

I'm heading down the 1st weekend in May, and that's the part of the trip I'm bracing myself for.

Ken....I'd have thought that you would have found a place to drive across quickly by now. You know, up and over a steep mountain or something.

I already have...it's the Playas de Tijuana 4WD road!

Sharksbaja - 4-4-2008 at 08:41 PM

Personally from what I've seen and heard, Americans have cut back on many luxuries. Travel to Europe is painful from the Euro standpoint. Gasoline although cheaper in Mex has slowed potential travelers or shortened their trip.
I'd venture to say that violence is a major factor but it happened at a time when there is an economic problem in the U.S.
Even the Canadians are cooling off a tad, even though their dollar is worth........... a dollar! Probably more.:wow::lol:

Sharksbaja - 4-4-2008 at 08:48 PM

Ohhhhhh!!! I get it!

Mexico has a bad case of the "Turistas".

It's affecting me in Ventura also, the last big north swell I was out on the Santa Barbara pier watching the surf at sandspit. A guy and his son pulled up, we started talking about the surf and I found out he was from San Diego. He said on big swells he usually went to baja to surf, but now because of the lawlessness in baja he comes north.

I couldn't be happier

I look at the development coming down the coast as a quality of life issue. The faux development in the Rosarito area is indicative of the plague that will no doubt destroy the entire peninsula. In my collegiate years-60’s-visiting Playa Mona Lisa was nirvana. Now with the altered coastline they have all but lost their beach. A sure sign of things to come, sad but factual. The bad news is my friends that have small shops that rely on the tourist are indeed suffering. My hope is the big ships can bring in enough tourists, for a SHORT visit, to keep them alive. Without any infrastructure the mega-condos will pollute the ecosystem beyond repair. Am I selfish, completely! I do tell my very close and dearest friends the real truth about Baja, anyone else its, my wife was raped, my dog became a taco, I have lost my teeth, and suffer from persistent diarrhea from all the bad food and contaminated h20.

Bajagypsy - 4-5-2008 at 03:12 PM

personaly, I think we have more crime here in our small canadian city than in any where in Baja. Crime is everywhere, be smart, be polite, use your head and all is fine.

Too late.

If people move into all those units their toilets are already all hooked up to the Pacific Ocean near shore sewage treatment plant (aka leach lines).

If people don't move into them and they all sit vacant then the plague of bats moving in to roost in the unfinished towers will cause a catastrophic impact to the coastal environment.
