Soul, being severely challenged I just use the 10 numbers from the character map -- I keep em handy (near the keyboard/monitor). I talk so much about the weather I've actually learned to punch in 0186 for the degree mark on my XP. By far the easiest way for a clumsy guy like me.

For Mac users -

 - Hit Option key + n, let go of Option key, then type n, or whatever letter you want the tilde symbol over

 Upside-down exclamation mark - Option+1

Hmmm.... so to have a degree symbol, it is 0186? Oh !!

Great... that helps with posting GPS data! Hold down the Alt key and enter 0186 on the number pad, to the right.

Thanks from 33 14' North, 11718' West!
