Fantastic Trip to Baja. Fish are Back!!!

Skeet/Loreto - 4-18-2008 at 06:56 AM

Just home after a Fantastic Trip to Mulege/Loreto!

Best Fishing in 25 Years. Hundreds of Schools of Yellowtail on Top of the Water, Millions of BaitFish, Dolphins, Whales. Like it was 30 years ago.
The Dorado will be Early!
Guess the Naysayers were wrong again. The Sea of Cortez is Loaded with Barracuda, Sardines, Mackeral.

Two disapointments, first Morning in Mulege a Cessna 206 was Hijacked from The Serinadad Airstrip and a Visit to Loreta Bay Pigstyes.

Mulege is very much like Loreto was 25 years ago, laidback, warm and Friendly People.

Come on down you Fisherman!!

I'm guessing the naysayers are those who maintain that the fish population in the Sea of Cortez is declining, right?

So you had a couple good days of fishing. Do you REALLY believe that means all is well? Do you REALLY believe that the longlining, purse seining, gill-netting, trapping, etc, etc, etc, are having NO EFFECT?

Wow!

backninedan - 4-18-2008 at 06:00 PM

I guess when your a lousy fisherman like skeet, you just assume that if you can catch a fish, they must be back is in days of old.

Frank - 4-18-2008 at 08:31 PM

Thanks for the trip report Skeet. Can anyone post a fish trip report on here without all of the BS?

Roberto - 4-18-2008 at 09:52 PM

Of course. But, that report IS bs.

Loreto

Windy last couple of days. Before that, Paula and I went to north Catalan. I wanted to try and catch one (yellowtail) on the surface with 25lb line. But the guys doing well were getting them deeper with weight on. Hooked one, and it was exciting for a brief period. Darn fish wouldn't fight fair against the light string, instead taking me into the rocks and cutting me off. Imagine that!

Did catch and release one later, though, on heavier line. We also did some sightseeing and Paula took pictures. Lots of big jellies in the water, which was far clearer than the water closer in near Loreto.

Some boats did well, some didn't. At least one went down along the west side of the island and reported eight yellowtail caught.

A few days before that we got three on another boat at Punta Lobos, Isla Carmen, flylining to infrequently rising fish. That day we were doing better than other boats. We also tried San Bruno reef earlier that day for nada. In general, among the many spots near Loreto that can hold fish, most days only a few report fish, so it's necessary to guess right. Better odds for those willing to make the long trip to Catalan, weather allowing.

Should be more cabrilla showing up soon, but haven't seen any lately.

However, there is reportedly another Loreto in another dimension where the fishing is much better. But I think the only way to get there is to go left at Berkley, then take a right at Texas, naked, and on a motorcycle.

such incredible waters, so terribly overfished and misused.

It's really only beginning now in the U.S., that the Gov't sees the advantages to the economy re: Sportfishing vs. Commercial

How long before Mexico sees it? Not in our lifetime.

It has not a real good year for yellowtail out of Loreto this year. As Don indicated, the best action has been south around Isla Catalana, which is normally the case. And there the action has been spotty. The best success has been by fishermen using downriggers to slow troll mackerel through fish schooled up 100' or so down in the water column. There are big fish to be had there, however, for those willing to make the long trip. Honest 40 pounders are not at all uncommon. Here is a photo of a broad shouldered 'tail still frisky at the boat.

And, on board before the circle hook was removed and the fish sent on his way. It is hard to get an idea of scale in pics of fish taken fishing solo, but that is my size 9 4E on the deck by the head of the fish.

Yellowtail were fairly easy to catch in Mulege this past winter. Used the "silver hook", going rate was $12US/kilo. Grouper and Snapper were also to be had for the same price, undressed. There are quite a few panga operating out of Mulege, just about all of 'em running gill nets. The fishermen are making a living. My personal experience was limited to fishing within a mile of the coast, using both bait and lures, caught very few fish.

Better fishing off Newport Beach in California than in Baja....The boat ride is much better in the Sea of Cortez.

That's about 125 pesos a kilo. Or roughly the same as we paid for filet mignon at the Ley in Constitution, or US rib eye at City Club in La Paz. I think that's a pretty good indication of just how many fish are out there.

Oh, I passed on the rib eye. Too expensive.

I'm a size 9 also but a D width. My wife doesn't seem to have any complaints but they'll lie about that kind of stuff - maybe the EEEE helps?:?:

bill erhardt - 4-19-2008 at 01:31 PM

Since I only wear shoes now about 5 months out of the year I've gone from D to 4E. New Balance sells 2E's and 4E's off the rack.

Fishing for Yellowtail right now:

In years past{40} I have caught many yellowtail. The other day we went South out of Mulege to Pt. Sta. Tersa, as we approached Hundrends of Birds were diving on at least 15 Schools of Bait, small Sardines, some Mackarel,Barracudaby the Millions, The Schools of Yellows would swing into shallow water and feed on top, then take a run futher out into Deep Water.

They finally got Gorged about 11 am and went out and stayed deep then the Pelicans would go over and set on the Rocks.

If anyone wants to load a Boat, go out anspend the night on the Beach at Catalana, Pt. Lobos, Pulpito, Del Efonso, start fishing at First light as that is when the Yellows start feeding in Close.

With the Abdundance of Bait the Dorado wil be in Early this Seson. By the Way all of the Barracuda were kept as they are great Eatin when ground up and made into Mexican Meatballs.

There were only 6 Pangas seen during the trip, all Mexican fishing with Handlines for Pargo and Cabrilla. The Day before my friends got ionto a Large Boil of AmberJack which is very uncommon to me. There were several large schools of Dolphions, two Whales and some Sharks feeding on the Bait.
Now Please don't tell me that this was the only Bait in the Sea of Cortez, I know better. I talked to several Pangeros who reported this Great Fishing all the way from Ilsa San Jose to the Middrift Islas.

The Fish are Back!!!{They did not all get fished out as has been Falsely Reported.} Keep in mind that as the Yellows get Full of Bait they move out into deeper water and usually will not feed down Deep until the 5 O'clock afternoon Bite, then will wait until First Light the next morning.

So Go! Go! and give some of you Catch to the Mexican Fisherman.
