Yesterday afternoon on the way back to Loreto from fishing at Isla Catalana I came across a humpback whale that put on a show for an audience of one.
There were also many finbacks and blues in the area whose spouts lingered for minutes over the calm, glassy water.

This shot would have been the best, but was unfortunately out of fucus.

Wonderful shots bill!! 1 and 2 look like male tail-slapping behavior, which is usually associated with mating. Did you notice any other individuals
around?? Great stuff, thanks,

Ken..... No, he was the only humpback in the immediate area. Maybe he was trying to attract a mate. In the calm conditions I was a mile or so away
when I first noticed his antics.

Thanks Bill. One can only imagine how that behemoth received those deep scars on it's fluke.

Looks like a great day out on the water. I'll bet you got some Yellowtails as well!
Thanks for posting the pictures.

ken....... Yes, as a matter of fact....... There has been a steady bite somewhere between slow and fantastic between Catalana and Santa Cruz for the
past month or so. And the fish, often in the 40 pound range, are big enough to make the long trip worthwhile.

DianaT - 4-21-2008 at 04:54 PM
What a show! Thanks so much for sharing it with us. Love those pictures!
Somehow, number 7 might just be my favorite---we have so many that look very similar---different subjects, but same effect.

Judy....... 100 yards, plus or minus. I stayed with him for 15 or 20 minutes idling along at one or two knots beside him while he ignored me and did
his thing.

stunnig photos, gracias...the scars on the tail are close calls with Orcas...the "rake" marks are from the tail sliding out of the orcas mouth through
his teeth...lucky whale lived to tell the TAIL!
