San Quintin - Shrimp

Just got back from San Quintin. Pops, Mom and Aunt came with.

Fishing in El Socorro was good....calicos, sandies, and rojos. No take on WSB, or YT. Still better fishing than the SF Bay Area.

Explored San Quintin"s backroads to try out new suspenion in my truck. Quail season is going to be good this year, lots of coveys seen.

We save the shrimp farm for the day before we left, and almost missed out. I bought 5 kilos, Mom 4k, and Aunt 4k. Owner said no mas till July. Paid about $80 pesos per kilo.

Pic. - tank on the right will be ready in July, the one on the left now drained to be readied for next batch. Owner said about 1 ton per tank when it's ready for sale.



How they catch the shrimp....wish I could throw like that. Young man worked his butt off for us....so I gave him a tip. He seems surprised, but he earned it.



Picking getting slim, but we all got what we wanted. Size of shrimp... we should have bought as soon as we got into town.

Great pics, luckily we still have a few kilos from GN in our freezer.
Can someone post directions to the shrimp farm, please ?

Ya, where's the shrimp farm? I love shrimp the best! Another reason I love SQ.

$8US/kilo is a good price for fresh shrimp. The going rate in Mulege is $12 and up, depending upon the size.:)

Real easy to find. It's right off Mex 1. It's closer to El Socorro, and El Pabellon.
If your heading south from SQ. After the recently opened Pemex at Los Pinos on the right, there's a another Pemex not yet opened on the right a few miles south, I think in El Pabellon. The shrimp farm is behind the Pemex a hundred or so yards. You can see it from Mex 1. That Pemex when opened will be the last Pemex before the one in El Rosario heading south.

Coming from El Rosario, after passing El Socorro, It's a few miles north. First, not yet opened Pemex on your left.

The owner said that they also have oysters for sale. That saves me a trip to the oyster farms. I just need to find out when they get their oysters in so I get them as fresh as possible.

Fishbuck, whenever you want to split the cost of fishing in San Quintin....I'm down. I would love to wet my lines with.

We bought 2 kilos when we got there, to try them out. The shrimp size was larger than the ones pictured. The owner also said the price would go to $90. peso, but I think it depends on how much you buy. It's Mexico.

I'm going to be dangerous once I get the language down. It sure is fun down there.

Ya, let's split a boat. My schedule is open so when you can make it we'll go. Last May before the booksigning I drove to punta baja and one of the pangas had a huge white sea bass. Another had some giant halibut.
Maybe we could split a hardcore old-school fishcamp panga out there?
Those guys know where the fish are!

We had another giant shrimp feed at Cielito Lindo. We bought 18 kilos I think. The shrimp man said it would be awhile before he had those big ones in again. I don't think he expected the business he's getting. Maybe he should have waited another year before he opened so he had more stock. Boy were they good. Look at the pictures on www.Tijuanajail.com.. . I wish I had some of them now,k:yes::rolleyes:
