Relaxing at Los Cerritos

If I had to pick one Tourist Spot I'd want to hang out in Baja, it would have to be Los Cerritos. Cindy and I normally like the laid back, away from crowds type of locations, but we did like this spot ALOT!

A nice Tiki Bar that serves you cold drinks on the beach!

I talked Cindy into sitting on the rocks for a picture. She didnt know how big the waves were behind her:lol:


I'm not into surfing myself, but I could sit and watch these guys for days. Wait, I did sit and watch them for days:coolup:








Once the sun started to set, we put our clothes back on and headed for the bar


Where we sat and watched the beautiful Baja Sunset from below the Tropic of Cancer

Chilly is relative and I wear a Spring suit in the Winter at Cerritos -- water is 65 degrees.

Cerritos is a right beach break with rocks to the left during takeoff -- possible to ride from outer break connecting inside. Shortboards rule and the locals have this place wired. They're fast and the wave can get crowded. 50-100' South the break can get gnarly.

45 miles North - Norte of Cabo just before Todos Santos

They let us camp on the beach for free for the week and the bar was very cool. They served you right on the beach and had really good prices for a bar with that kind of service.

Like I said, it was a tourist spot, and not one of the places we would normally go, but the surfing looked awesome and the beaches were always loaded with hotties. So I wasnt complaining:cool:

Well as Clinton would say...it depends on what the definition of "ruined" is. In any event, I was down in Feb and it was still pretty, you could still surf and you could still walk as far south as your legs could take you. However, for those that want time to stand still, this just wasn't going to happen on this gorgeous beach once the ejido privatized and sold off their land. Just the facts.

Pro's: clean bathrooms provided so folks don't do their deed wherever, cold cervesas on the beach served by very nice staff, warm blankets around a nice fire while watching the sunset and being served a meal. Con: Jet ski, Jet ski oh and did I mention Jet ski...

Yes it still is.

A gal died at that fools house in Pescadero during one of their all night raves while we were down.

We saw him launch off a wave going out and landed right in the middle of the surfers at the take off spot. We were very glad I wasn't in the water at the time. Folks say it happens regularly and no one does anything about it because he is such a maniac. :mad:

Thanks Captn. Mike, yes I agree Cindy is a hottie, But I still never stop lookin.

Someone once asked me "Does your wife get mad when you're around all these crazy women?" As we used to own a rowdy biker bar that was known for half naked women and shirt-4-shirt contests, to which my wife replied

"I know he always will come home to me, and the day he stops looking at georgous women is the day I'll get worried!":lol:

it is a great place, lots of change going on down there, our place is just down the road a bit at the 80Km marker on the ocean side.

Lived down there full time from 94 to 2002 now we don't get to go down there near enough.....Sigh

Todos Santos used to only have one phone you could call out on at Pillars, She would bring it out onto the patio and dial the number for you....

One word of caution about cerritos......watch your belongings, try not to leave anything of value in the car or around your site if you go into town or for a walk...every day brings bad rip off stories. Just use common sense.

I'd say this advice applies to just about anywhere in the hemisphere, not just Cerritos.

true but Cerritos has a particularly bad reputation as far as beaches between Pastora and Cabo on the pacific side.

Just about every day you would see messages posted at the message center or other local hangouts asking people to be on the look out for items stolen out of a vehicle or campsite at cerritos.....never really saw or heard as much about the other beaches....just a local observation I'm passing along

Some places have a reputation...this is one of them.

Max... what's keeping you and Lynn away from Elias Calles? I will always remember how nice your spot was and the nice place your neigbors had where we stayed that Christamas, 2001... La Cocina Pacifica.

Mostly our parents getting old and needing help, also our new son. You know how these things go..I do miss it and have no desire to sell....Someday we will be back full time. The place has changed so much, We always knew it would and i'm glad we bought our hectare back in the early 90's when beach front was going for $4 a Square meter. It's crazy now. It is a sweet spot, back in 94 we were one of only two or three gringo families in Elias Calles. Now there are million dollar plus places going up all around us...you can't even really pee off the hill side in front of the house anymore.

I do remember your visit, found you sleeping in the hammock as I recall. fun times

EMAM: I'm glad that you can still camp at Los Cerritos. We've done that a few times in the past, before the restaurant was built. I think last year when we were down there we just went for the day.

My husband has a piece of land in that area as well, so look for the bed and breakfast we're going to build. Don't look for awhile, though, it will take us a few years!! Saludos, Heather

Where is that bar in relation to the campground/restaurant that used to be in that area? It's been a few years (9 or so) since I've camped on that beach, but it was great.

The bar is about 100/200 yards from the old campground. And the old restaurant that everyone talks of is gone.

The beach in question (I believe it is 1100 meters of frontage) came up for sale in 1998.

Oregon developer Roger Pollock paid several million dollars for it.

Maybe the surf crowd should have pooled their resources and purchased it so that it could remain "unspoiled" by development.

Some folks appreciate the new outdoor restaurant, bar and engineered privvies, others feel that "their" pristine surf spot has been taken away. Its' all a matter of perspective.

Large undeveloped beaches like Los Cerritos was, are becoming a rarity in Southern Baja. Especially ones with easy access and situated close to towns. Los Cerritos was one of the last really good camping spots remaining if you wanted a spot close to food, water, etc. Now its gone. Not everyone likes to be surrounded by restaurants, hotels and condos, I hate to see Los Cerritos turn into another Cabo environment. By the way, I'm no surfer.
