meet other nomads ?

Hey Folks !!

Matt n Mutt here!! We last month returned from a month-long 1500 mile exploration of Baja Norte (dabbled below the border only a bit) just a few weeks ago. Since then, we've caught our limit of both trout and bass in AZ, sawed off the tree trunk that'd impaled itself through my Jeep fender, scuba dived the Florida Keys, and now are back in SoCal getting geared up for some further adventures in Baja Sur.

I'll be keeping it pretty rustic (eg, deserted beach camping, etc), but if any of you Nomads has an inkling to meet up perhaps and show an newcomer some of your local sites, then that'd be just fantastic. I can reciprocally cover basic expenses...

It's so great to get lost in another world, especially when you speak the language like a toddler (I try, and am learning espanol slowly), but occasionally it's nice to meet similarly minded people. I'll be coming through Gonzaga/BoLA, en route Mulege/Concepcion, possibly down to La Paz, leaving L.A. this week (May 7 or 8). My schedule is extremely fluid.

I am open for all types of outdoor adventures, or just getting a new take on the local scene that is new to me. I'm traveling with my severely cool pup, Kobe, who, aside from chasiing 3 pre-sunrise food-raiding coyotes out of my Gonzaga camp just a little while ago, revels in abject laziness and eating all the clams that La Gringa can offer. But she's excellent with all critters, 4-legged as well as 2-legged.

If anybody's interested in possibly meeting up, then just drop a note--that'd be really cool !! I've traveled Africa, South America, and parts of Asia, but Baja's calling me back, imagine that !!!

Try Punta Abreojos (we have a casa there) and pueblos north of there...good outback camping, great people, good fishing etc.

Where were you in the Keys? I lived (and guided) on Ramrod Key for ten years. Had the premier dive location in all the Keys four miles out, Looe Key.

Keep working on the Espanol, the natives are incredibly patient and extremely helpful...When in Abreojos go see my numero uno amigo, Martin Arce, tire shop in Abreojos, say hello from "Vikingo y Devorah".......

Good Luck cap'n g

George, thanks !!

Hey there,

Thanks for the excellent tips. I'll be checking out the places you suggested, and paying appropriate homage to the folks you made mention of !! In the Keys, I was in Islamorada, briefly (only a week in southern Florida...). Looe Key/Middle Key diving's always been better than the cattle boats out of Largo !! What outfit did you run?? It's possible that I gave you business a decade ago or so...

Thanks again,

Mat

I'll be in mulege at our place around the 25th of this month with some buddies for a dorado tourney there...stop by our place at the gringo park the "oasis", #54, and suck a cold pacifico with us...we can point you in the direction of some cool, isolated camp spots...

Thanks, Folks !!

Michael, George, all other Nomads !!

Thanks for the tips & invites !! I'm southbound this week, so it's likely I'll be in your neighborhood sometime soon--hope to link up at some point ! Michael, what are the dorado's eathing these days ?? I have some new spinnerbaits that I bought 2 weeks ago that depleted Arizona's bass stocks, butg I can't imagine they'd work in the surf...

Mateo y Kobe

mulegemichael - 5-5-2008 at 05:07 PM

mutt/matt.....the spinnerbaits aint much good down here in the salt...bring down chrome spoons and jigs for off the beach

Fish bait

Matt&Mutt - 5-5-2008 at 05:14 PM

Good word--thanks.

I only have a short pole for inland/surf fishing, but am not afraid of getting wet. What's the minimum pound test strength line that you'd consider using in the surf ??

Thanks,

M

Billy Baits, assorted colors, are kick ass on dorado and jurel. Also bunker spoons (large) will get your biggest yellowtail (jurel).

I ran PEP Charters out of Ramrod Key, mostly bones, but tarpon and permit also........also ran same out of Provincetown MA Cape Cod, striped bass.

Be home in Abreojos July into October........

Surf, I've been fishing 12 lb clear Ande..
halibut, corvina, snapper....anything bigger, up the lb test accordingly.

Krocodiles, rubber and bucktails, white and yellow will be a good bet from the beach.

Sounds great... post often when you can with updates on your adventure! Are you living out of a Jeep...? How about a photo of your rig so we can identify you?

Please utilize my web pages for ideas on places to visit... We are here to help!

Hey Nomads !!

Matt&Mutt - 5-6-2008 at 10:56 AM

David D, in answer to your inquiry, yup, me & the pup essentially live out of the Jeep these days (the rest of my life is in a storage unit in Michigan, tsk tsk !!).

Here's a pic of the rig, as well as one of the pilot & navigator--give a beep or a wave if you see us, or just swing on in if you see us at camp someplace !! Kobe'll bark, but she's harmless..

Horseshoes ??

Matt&Mutt - 5-6-2008 at 06:56 PM

Hmm, doublle-odd horsie shoes, huh ?? Well, I'm in L.A., and a couple of pairs of Reeboks'd probably be easier to come across, but I'll take a quick peek around. I'm pretty close to Griffith Park, where equestrian playtime is a big deal, so there's got to be supplies somewhere local. Can't promise, but I'll take a look-see...
